2-Alkyl and 2-aryl-3-(phenylamino)quinazolin-4(3H)-one derivatives I [R1 = H, Cl; R2 = H, Me, Et, n-Pr, n-Bu, Ph] were synthesized through a one-pot three-component condensation of an isatoic anhydride, Et or Me ortho ester and phenylhydrazine in the presence of KAl(SO4)2·12H2O (alum) as a nontoxic, reusable, inexpensive and easily available catalyst. The synthesis was conducted under microwave irradiation and classical heating. All the synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity, among which compounds I [R1 = H; R2 = H, Me] were showed good results.
