The work reports on the physicochem. and tribol. properties of gallate ester oils prepared from fully renewable resources, such as gallic acid and fatty acids. The ester structures were identified by proton NMR spectroscopy (1H NMR), carbon NMR spectroscopy (13C NMR) and high-resolution mass spectra (HRMS) data. The d. at 20°C (d20), kinematic viscosity (KV), viscosity index (VI), pour point (PP), flash point (FP), thermal and oxidative stabilities, friction-reducing and antiwear properties of gallate ester oils were evaluated. The tribol. properties of gallate ester oils as lubricants for steel, copper, and aluminum tribo-pairs can be compared with those of the com. available lubricating oil tris(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate (Phe-3Ci8), but their viscosity-temperature characteristics, thermal and oxidative stabilities are better than those of Phe-3Ci8. More importantly, they have much higher biodegradabilities than Phe-3Ci8. The study of the lubrication mechanism shows that the phys. and/or chem. adsorption film formed by gallate ester mols. between friction pairs is the key factor for them to obtain friction-reducing and antiwear properties.

Herein, the authors present a technique for the coating of microplate wells with thin layers of cross-linked polymers, as demonstrated by the preparation of a small library of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) imprinted with atrazine and the corresponding control polymers (NIPs). The composition of MIPs was based on the results of a computational screening using the SYBYL suite of mol. modeling software. The monomers giving the most favorable interaction energies in a virtual monomers screening were N,N’-methylene-bis-acrylamide, methacrylic acid, N-phenylethylene diamine methacrylamide (NPEDMA), and itaconic acid. The polymer library was prepared by surface grafting to a layer of poly-(NPEDMA), formed by oxidative polymerization in each of the microplate wells, after activation of the methacrylamide double bonds with a photochem. iniferter (benzyl N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate). MIPs and NIPs were prepared with each of the four functional monomers, cross-linked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, using template-monomer ratios of 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3. Binding of the template and its structural analogs (simizine and metribuzine) was assessed by LC-MS. The method is suitable for rapid screening and optimization of MIPs, is capable of automation, and uses a simple grafting protocol compatible with conventional MIP compositions The method not only can be used as a screening tool but could also form the basis of new MIP-based assays.

All particles were added at 10 wt%. Human third molars had their occlusal enamel removed and dentin surface polished. After acid etching, the adhesives were applied on the dentin surfaces and the teeth were restored with a com. nanofilled resin composite. The μTBS and micro-permeability were tested after 24 h or 2 mo of storage in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37°C. Bonded interfaces were observed using scanning electron microcopy (SEM). Gelatinolytic activity at the adhesive interfaces was assessed by in situ zymog. at 24 h and 2 mo in SBF/37°C. The results were described as relative florescent units (RFU). μTBS data were analyzed by ANOVA/Games-Howell test. Data from micro-permeability and in situ zymog. were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis/Mann-Whitney test (alpha: 5%). Differences in μTBS were found among adhesives (control = MTA > DCPD_CA > DCPD_DEGDMA, p < 0.001), but not between storage times. The control group showed the lowest permeability at both observation periods. Except for DCPD_CA, no significant increases in micro-permeability were observed after 2 mo. All groups presented significant reductions in RFU values between 24 h and 2 mo. DCPD_DEGDMA (at 24 h) and MTA (at 2 mo) presented statistically lower RFU than the control (p < 0.01). Evidence of reduced MMP activity was observed at adhesive interfaces with the use of exptl. adhesives containing calcium-releasing particles. However, after two months, bond strength and micro-permeability results suggest that interfacial stability was not affected by adhesive formulation.

There have been many attempts to achieve a clear-cut separation of alkylated aromatic compounds based on the number of aromatic rings employing normal-phase liquid chromatog. However, each method has its own limitations to address this issue. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the involved mechanisms for this limitation. For this purpose, stationary phases viz. amino- and cyano-bonded silica gel were considered. The phases were evaluated with the distilled cuts of a crude oil based on resolution and selectivity, and the optimum phase was selected for the separation of a crude oil. It was observed that there was a significant overlap of compounds with the same ring-number in different peaks. The cause of overlap was linked to the number of alkyl carbon atoms attached to the aromatic rings. Aromatic compounds substituted with higher number of alkyl carbon atoms (total) elute earlier than those with lower number of alkyl carbon atoms. This trend was maintained for hydrocarbons, sulfur-containing compounds (S1), and di-sulfur containing compounds (S2). It was further corroborated using mol. modeling calculations that (i) the increase in the number of alkyl carbon atoms increases the mol. volume, and (ii) the volume of the mols. remains similar irresp. of the number and position of alkyl substituents provided that the total number of alkyl carbon atoms remains the same. Finally, it was revealed that the counteractive role of the size exclusion mechanism limits the application of normal-phase chromatog. for a clear-cut separation of alkylated aromatic compounds according to the number of aromatic rings.

Fluoroarenes can be selectively deuterated by H/D exchange with common deuterated solvents in the presence of a catalytic amount of an alkali metal carbonate or, for the less acidic arenes, stoichiometric quantities of potassium phosphate.
