Radical hydroboration reactions have only recently been reported and are still rare. Here we describe a photoredox radical hydroboration of alpha,beta-unsaturated esters, amides, ketones, and nitriles with NHC-boranes that uses only an organocatalyst and visible light. The conditions are mild, the substrate scope is broad, and the alpha/beta regioselectivity is high. The reaction requires only the organocatalyst; there is no costly metal, and there are no other additives (base, cocatalyst, initiator).

A series of cinnamic monomers, which can be derived from naturally occurring phenylpropanoids, were radically copolymerized with vinyl monomers such as methyl acrylate (MA) and styrene (St). Although the monomer reactivity ratios were close to zero for all the cinnamic monomers, such as methyl cinnamate (CAMe), cinnamic acid (CA), N-isopropyl cinnamide (CNIPAm), cinnamaldehyde (CAld), and cinnamonitrile (CN), they were incorporated into the copolymers and significantly increased the glass transition temperatures despite the relatively low incorporation rates of up to 40 mol % due to their rigid 1,2-disubstituted structures. The regioselectivity of the radical copolymerization of CAMe was evaluated on the basis of the results of ruthenium-catalyzed atom transfer radical additions as model reactions. The obtained products suggest that the radicals of MA and St predominantly attack the vinyl carbon of the carbonyl side of CAMe and that the propagation of CAMe mainly occurs via the styrenic radical. The ruthenium-catalyzed living radical polymerization, nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP), and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization provided the copolymers with controlled molecular weights, narrow molecular weight distributions, and controlled comonomer compositions. The copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and CNIPAm prepared via RAFT copolymerization showed thermoresponsivity with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) that could be tuned by altering the comonomer incorporation and a higher LCST than the copolymers of NIPAM and St, which possessed similar molecular weights and similar NIPAM contents, due to the additional N-isopropylamide groups in the CNIPAm units compared to the St units.

Palladium chloride and chlorinated poly (vinyl chloride) (CPVC) mixture were prepared into homogeneous solution, followed by electrospinning to make uniform nanofibers with average diameter of similar to 460 nm. Then, these composite nanofibers were treated in ethylenediamine solution to functionalize and crosslink the CPVC molecules inside the nanofibers to improve their chelating ability and solvent resistance. The functionalization and crosslinking of CPVC molecules inside composite nanofibers were confirmed by SEM, FT-IR, EA and PALS characterizations. The catalytic performance of these palladium encapsulated CPVC nanofibers (Pd@ACPVC) have been evaluated by the Heck and Sonogashira reactions. The catalysis results demonstrate that this Pd@ACPVC catalyst was very effective and stable to catalyze the coupling reaction of aromatic iodides with alkenes (Heck reaction) or phenyl acetylene (Sonogashira reaction) to afford the coupling products in moderate to excellent yields. Due to the regular fibrous structure, the Pd@ACPVC could be readily separated and recovered from reaction mixture. In addition, the Pd@ACPVC could be separately reused for 10 times for Heck reaction and 8 times for Sonogashira reaction without significant decrement of coupling yields. After careful investigation, the palladium leaching from Pd@ACPVC in the reuse procedure could be ascribed to the loss of chelating groups (amino groups) and expansion of free volume holes in the composite nanofibers. The excellent catalytic activity and stability of Pd@ACPVC could be attributed to the strong chelating ability of amino groups, encapsulation of palladium nanoparticles and ultrafine fiber.

Oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes were modified anchoring phosphine oxides and used as heterogeneous catalysts. A proper substitution of the phosphine oxides allowed the use of the Tour reaction and the nitrene cycloaddition to obtain functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT) with a loading up to 0.73 mmol/g of material. The catalysts proved efficient in Wittig reactions, Mitsunobu reactions, and Staudinger ligations. Furthermore, the phosphorus decorated CNT were used to produce nanocomposite with Pd nanoparticles able to catalyze Heck reactions.

Guillermo Calleja and co-workers from @urjc describe URJC-1-MOF as a new heterogeneous recyclable catalyst for c-heteroatom coupling reactions The capacity of copper-based URJC-1-MOF as a MOF catalyst in cross-coupling reactions has been evaluated, focusing on the Chan-Lam-Evans arylation-type reactions on amines and alcohols without extra additives or ligands. The extraordinary chemical and structural stability of URJC-1-MOF and its good specific surface, make this material a promising alternative to homogeneous Cu (II) catalysts for cross-coupling reactions. URJC-1-MOF showed a remarkable catalytic activity for cross-coupling C-N and C-O reactions, higher than other heterogeneous and homogeneous copper-based catalyst, such as CuO, HKUST-1, Cu-MOF-74, Cu(OAc)(2) and CuSO4.5H(2)O. Moreover, its easy recovery by simple filtration and reusability in successive runs without any loss of activity and stability, demonstrates the potential of URJC-1-MOF as an alternative catalyst for this kind of reactions in different chemical media of industrial interest.

The antigen-antibody interaction determines the sensitivity and specificity of competitive immunoassay for hapten detection. In this paper, the specificity of a monoclonal antibody against alternariol-like compounds was evaluated through indirect competitive ELISA. The results showed that the antibody had cross-reactivity with 33 compounds with the binding affinity (expressed by IC50) ranging from 9.4 ng/mL to 12.0 mu g/mL. All the 33 compounds contained a common moiety and similar substituents. To understand how this common moiety and substituents affected the recognition ability of the antibody, a three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) between the antibody and the 33 alternariol-like compounds was constructed using comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) methods. The q(2) values of the CoMFA and CoMSIA models were 0.785 and 0.782, respectively, and the r(2) values were 0.911 and 0.988, respectively, indicating that the models had good predictive ability. The results of 3D-QSAR showed that the most important factor affecting antibody recognition was the hydrogen bond mainly formed by the hydroxyl group of alternariol, followed by the hydrophobic force mainly formed by the methyl group. This study provides a reference for the design of new hapten and the mechanisms for antibody recognition.

The complete conversion of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin in lignocellulosic biomass into value-added chemicals is of great significance in biorefinery processes. Herein, a cascade-step strategy was developed for the conversion of hemicellulose and lignin into mixed organic acids, and cellulose into ethylene glycol. Typical biomass of Miscanthus was first treated with formic acid in the presence of H2O2, giving a formic acid solution and cellulosic biomass. Lignin in Miscanthus was oxidized to low polymerized organic acids through linkage cleavages and aromatic ring ruptures during the treatment process, forming a homogeneous formic acid solution with a weight yield of 95%. Hemicellulose was transformed into maleic acid at 56.2% selectivity via a hydrolysis-dehydration-oxidation process. Both hemicellulose and lignin were degraded into organic acids with an overall weight yield of 92.4%. The cellulose in the solid residue had a hydrophilic surface and is highly accessible to catalysts in the aqueous solution, and it was totally converted into ethylene glycol with a yield of up to 65.7% over a binary catalyst of H2WO4-Ru/C. Relying on such a cascade reaction strategy, the three major components of Miscanthus were transformed into mixed organic acids and ethylene glycol, which provides a potential strategy for complete valorisation of biomass into value-added chemicals.

In this study, the unique capacity of bifunctional BrOnsted bases to generate alpha-branched ketone dienolates and control both site- and stereoselectivity of their addition reactions to representative classes of carbon electrophiles (i.e., vinyl sulfones, nitroolefins, formaldehyde) is documented. We demonstrate that by using selected chiral tertiary amine/squaramide catalysts, the reactions of beta,gamma-unsaturated cycloalkanones proceed through the dienolate C alpha almost exclusively and provide all-carbon quaternary cyclic ketone adducts in good yields with very high enantioselectivities. A minor amount (<5%) of gamma-addition is observed when nitroolefins are used as electrophiles. The parent acyclic ketone dienolates proved to be less reactive under these conditions, and thus still constitute a challenging class of substrates. Quantum chemical calculations correctly predict these differences in reactivity and explain the observed site-specificity and enantioselectivity. The Ginkgo biloba metabolite bilobalide is widely ingested by humans but its effect on the mammalian central nervous system is not fully understood(1-4). Antagonism of gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptors (GABA(A)Rs) by bilobalide has been linked to the rescue of cognitive deficits in mouse models of Down syndrome(5). A lack of convulsant activity coupled with neuroprotective effects have led some to postulate an alternative, unidentified target(4); however, steric congestion and the instability of bilobalide(1,2,6) have prevented pull-down of biological targets other than the GABA(A)Rs. A concise and flexible synthesis of bilobalide would facilitate the development of probes for the identification of potential new targets, analogues with differential selectivity between insect and human GABA(A)Rs, and stabilized analogues with an enhanced serum half-life(7). Here we exploit the unusual reactivity of bilobalide to enable a late-stage deep oxidation that symmetrizes the molecular core and enables oxidation states to be embedded in the starting materials. The same overall strategy may be applicable to G. biloba congeners, including the ginkgolides-some of which are glycine-receptor-selective antagonists(8). A chemical synthesis of bilobalide should facilitate the investigation of its biological effects and its therapeutic potential.

In the present study, the modification of a mesoporous organosilica nanocomposite SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous 15) was carried out in two steps, first through the surface functionalization of SBA-Pr-NH(2)with 2-chloroquinoline-3-carbaldehyde to form SBA-Pr-NCQ, and then through a post-modification process with palladium ions. The target nanocompound structure of SBA-Pr-NCQ-Pd was characterized by different techniques (thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). The catalytic performance of the porous inorganic-organic hybrid nanocomposite (SBA-Pr-NCQ-Pd) in one of the most important carbon-carbon bond-forming processes, the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction of aryl halides and methacrylate in water/ethanol media, was examined. Compared to previous reports, this protocol afforded some advantages, such as high yields of products, short reaction times, catalyst stability without leaching, simple methodology, easy workup, and greener conditions. Also, the nanocatalyst can be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused several times without a significant decrease in activity and promises economic as well as environmental benefits.
