Comprehension in hemicellulose pyrolysis is critical to generate renewable fuel and valuable chemical. Herein, a self-designed tubular reactor was applied to observe the appearance alteration and chemical structure evolution during the whole xylan pyrolysis process. Before 200 degrees C, it was free moisture removal stage without significant chemical structure alteration. Xylan began to depolymerize at 200 degrees C corresponding with the appearance change from its original state to dark brown, cleavage of branched-chain and primary product acids & ketones generation. The main chain of xylan was completely broken at 250-350 degrees C via beta-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage, dehydration, decarboxylation, and decarbonylation reaction. Acids were mainly originated from hemicellulose pyrolysis. The typical signals from FTIR,C-13 CP/MAS NMR were disappeared at 350 degrees C. In the carbonation stage, the C/H and C/O ratio reached 2.01 and 4.54, leading to the aromaticity enhancement of char and formation of carbon-centered radicals.

The direct oxidation of alcohols to esters through a green and cost-effective strategy is a fascinating chemical synthesis route. In this study, an environmentally friendly N-doped porous carbon encapsulated Co-based nano-catalyst was prepared via a simple carbonization procedure, utilizing renewable chitosan, accessible dicyandiamide and low-cost Co(OAc)(2) as co-precursors. The obtained Co@NC-2-T catalysts were successfully used in selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols with methanol to esters under atmospheric reaction conditions. The Co@NC-2-900 catalyst (added with 2 g dicyandiamide and pyrolyzed at 900 degrees C) shows optimal activity and applicability and can also be reused at least six times in the oxidative esterification of aromatic alcohols with excellent stability. The presence of superoxide anion radicals in the current catalytic system was detected by the EPR method, and a possible mechanism of alcohol oxidation to ester was proposed on this basis. Thus, this study provides a facile, eco-friendly, and highly efficient catalytic system for oxidative esterification of alcohols.

Objective: To investigate the efficacies of 12 essential oil (EO) formulations from three Zingiberaceae plants (Alpinia galanga, Curcuma zedoaria, and Zingiber cassumunar) individually and in combination with an augmenting Eucalyptus globulus (E. globulus) EO against females of Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus) and Anopheles minimus (An. minimus). Methods: These formulations were evaluated for their ovicidal, oviposition deterrent and adulticidal activities against Ae. albopictus and An. minimus by a topical method, a double-choice method and a WHO susceptibility test, respectively. Results: It was found that all formulations of Zingiberaceae plants EOs augmented with E. globulus EO were more effective in oviposition deterrent, ovicidal, and adulticidal activities against the two mosquito species than all of the formulations used without E. globulus EO. Their oviposition deterrent, ovicidal and adulticidal activities were equivalent to those of 10% w/v cypennethrin. In contrast, 70% v/v ethyl alcohol as a control alone was not effective at all. The highest synergistic effect in effective repellency against Ae. albopictus was achieved by 5% Alpinia galanga EO + 5% E. globulus EO and against An. minimus was 5% Zingiber cassumunar EO + 5% E. globulus EO. Moreover, the highest synergistic effects in ovicidal activities against Ae. albopictus and An. minimus were achieved by 10% Zingiber cassumunar EO + 10% E. globulus EO and 5% Curcuma zedoaria EO + 5% E. globulus EO, respectively. For the adulticidal activities, the highest synergistic effect against two mosquitoes was achieved by 5% Curcuma zedoaria EO + 5% E. globulus EO. Conclusions: These results suggest that Zingiberaceae plant EOs augmented with E. globulus EO have a high potential to be developed into oviposition deterrent, ovicidal, and adulticidal agents for controlling populations of Ae. albopictus and An. minimus.

Solid acid catalysts are environmentally friendly alternatives to the use of mineral acids in a range of applications, including the esterification of carboxylic acids. Here, a phosphorus- and nitrogen-doped, carbon-modified, fully heterogeneous solid acid catalyst was prepared by pyrolysis of a mixture of melamine and tungstophosphoric acid at 250, 500, and 750 degrees C under a nitrogen atmosphere provided. The structure of the different catalysts was evaluated by surface area measurements, XRD, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and electron microscopies. Pyrolysis at 500 degrees C created complex solid materials with larger surface area and significantly higher acidity, which can be attributed to WO3 formation on a heteroatomic (N,P)-carbon structure. The 500 degrees C-treated heterogeneous catalysts showed remarkably better activity for esterification of palmitic acid and were thus applied in the esterification of a broad range of carboxylic acids with good overall yields. Furthermore, the solid acid catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled up to eight times without significant loss of activity with no leaching of species to the reaction mixture.

The idea of using biaryl structures to generate synthetic building blocks such as spirolactones is attractive because biaryl structures are abundant in biomass waste streams. However, the inertness of aromatic rings of biaryls makes it challenging to transform them into functionalized structures. In this work, we developed photoinduced dearomatization of nonphenolic biaryl compounds to generate spirolactones. We demonstrate that dearomatization can be performed via either aerobic photocatalysis or anaerobic photooxidation to tolerate specific synthetic conditions. In both pathways, dearomatization is induced by electrophilic attack of the carboxyl radical. The resulting spirodiene radical is captured by either oxygen or water in aerobic and anaerobic systems, respectively, to generate the spirodienone. These methods represent novel routes to synthesize spirolactones from the biaryl motif.

A Cd(II)-based metal-organic framework as fluorescent chemical sensor, formulated as {[Cd-3(bmipia)(2)]center dot 10DMF center dot 5H(2)O}(n) (FCS-2), was synthesized through a hydrothermal process and structurally characterized via X-ray crystallography. FCS-2 represented a new three-dimensional framework assembled from a semi -rigid aromatic carboxylate ligand and exhibited fascinating fluorescence due to the highly crystalline and ordered molecular structure. There is a lot of interest in the development of new, safer and more sustainable polar aprotic solvents due to their importance in industrial applications and significant safety issues with the most commonly used examples. One such area of application is in pharmaceutically relevant C-C coupling reactions, where polar aprotic solvents are commonly used for solubility and to stabilise reaction intermediates. Although there are now a number of excellent alternatives in the literature, to date they have not been compared in a single study. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the green solventsN-butylpyrrolidinone (NBP), gamma-valerolactone (GVL), propylene carbonate (PC) and dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene) in Heck and Baylis-Hillman reactions. Good conversions and initial rates were observed in GVL and NBP in Heck reactions. Cyrene exhibited high initial rates of reaction and high yields in the Baylis-Hillman reaction. This demonstrates Cyrene to be a promising alternative polar aprotic solvent for this reaction.

A series of palladium(H) complexes incorporating l-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholenes as the P-ligands were prepared from phospholene oxides by deoxygenation followed by complexation with PdCl2(PhCN)(2). The two 1-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholene ligands were trans position to each other in the Pd(II)-complexes. As the ligands contain a P-stereogenic center, the Pd-complexes were obtained as a 1:1 mixture of two stereoisomers, the homochiral (R,R and S,S) and the meso (R,S) forms, when racemic starting materials were used. Catalytic activity of an aryl- and an alkyl-3-phospholene-palladium(II)-complex was evaluated in hydroalkoxycarbonylation of styrene. The alkyl-derivative showed higher activity and selectivity towards the formation of the esters of 3-phenylpropionic acid. However, the overall activity of these PdCl2(phospholene)(2)-type complexes was low.

Conventional methods to improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials usually involve the use of flame-retardant elements such as Cl, Br and P, however, their use may bring more smoke and toxic gases hazards, and more importantly, cause non-negligible environmental and ecological problems. In this work, we put forward a novel green strategy that eliminates the use of any conventional flame-retardant elements to improve the flame retardancy by incorporating a synergistically cross-linkable structure (named PN) containing phenylacetylene and phenylimide groups. The resulting PN copolymer exhibited an excellent 55% lower smoke release rate and 68% lower heat release rate than the pure polymer, as well as a high LOI value of 32% and UL-94 V-0 rating with excellent anti-dripping performance. TG-DSC, rheological and FTIR results proved the high cross-linking ability of the PN copolymer due to the synergistic cross-linking effect between the imide-isoimide rearrangement of phenylimide and the self-cross-linking of phenylacetylene. The SEM, Raman and Py-GC/MS results further upheld the condensed phase flame-retardant mechanism. This eco-friendly synergistic cross-linking strategy provided new perspective for the design and synthesis of polymeric materials with excellent flame retardancy, great anti-dripping performance, and low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gas.

The essential oil was extracted by Clevenger apparatus and the components were analyzed through GC-MS. The yield of essential oil obtained from hydro-distillation of fruits ranged from 2.72 to 7.6%. The maximum yield was 7.6% from wild fruits at 1600-1800 m altitude and the minimum was 2.72% from cultivated fruits at 1000-1200 m altitude. This was the highest recorded essential oil yield from Z. armatum fruits. A total of 13 volatile compounds were identified from the essential oil by GC-MS analysis. The major components were linalool, cinnamate (E)methyl, limonene, myrcene, sabinene and terpinen-4-ol, which were present in higher proportion in all the samples. Other components were identified in a very low proportion. The main component linalool occurred in the highest proportion (74.12%) from wild populations at 1600-1800 m altitude and the lowest (44.73%) was from cultivated populations at 1000-1200 m altitude. The highest proportion of linalool was also reported for the first time in this study from Z. armatum fruits. Among the six major components of the essential oil, terpinen-4-ol was present in the lowest proportion. Results of the present study indicated that the altitude and habitat types could affect the essential oil composition in Zanthoxylum armatum fruits.
