A self-catalyzed folding strategy to form single chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) was developed via an intramol. N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-mediated benzoin condensation. Benzaldehyde, styrene and benzimidazolium chloride units were randomly incorporated into a poly(ionic liquid)-based (PIL) copolymer precursor by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization Post-chem. modification of this linear precursor by insertion of a non-innocent acetate counter-anion into the benzimidazolium moieties conferred thermolatent catalytic behavior owing to the equilibrium between benzimidazolium acetate units and corresponding NHC ones. Upon heating, catalytically active NHCs allowed the formation of benzoin-type intramol. cross-links, thus folding linear chains into SCNPs. NHC moieties became deactivated after cooling to room temperature, which enabled easy isolation and purification of the covalently and intramolecularly cross-linked SCNPs. Importantly, the latent NHC moieties were proven to retain their catalytic activity when arranged into SCNPs as evidenced through their reactivation by simple heating. The catalytic activity of these SCNPs was further confirmed by implementing another NHC-organocatalyzed reaction, namely, transesterification reaction between vinyl acetate and benzyl alc. This work represents the first example of catalysis by a parent linear precursor which drives its own folding and remains catalytically active.

The chain lengths of both the solvophilic macro-RAFT agent and the solvophobic block, together with the initial amount of CKA, were independently varied to achieve various compositions The amount of CKA in the copolymers ranged from 4 to �0 mol % by adjusting the monomer stoichiometry, leading to nearly complete degradation for CKA contents above �5 mol %. rROPISA led to stable nanoparticles in all cases, ranging from 40 to 500 nm in diameter, depending on the exptl. conditions, as assessed by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Low average diameters and very narrow particle size distributions were obtained for CKA contents below 20 mol %, except for a targeted solvophobic chain length of 300 that gave narrow particle size distributions up to 50 mol % in CKA. Morphol. investigation revealed the formation of spheres for all copolymer compositions, which was assigned to both the nature of the RAFT agent used and insertion of CKA in the solvophobic block, which prevent the formation of other morphologies.

In this paper, a NMR method is presented to measure changes in the 1H T1 relaxation times of small mols. in human hair keratin to quantify their interaction with the fiber. Two populations of small-mol. compounds were identified with distinct relaxation times, demonstrating the partitioning of the compounds into different keratin environments. The changes in relaxation time for solvent in hair compared with bulk solvent were shown to be related to the mol. weight (MW) and the partition coefficient, LogP, of the solvent investigated. Compounds with low MWs and high hydrophilicities had greater reductions in their T1 relaxation times and therefore experienced increased interactions with the hair fiber. From the results, Ph β-D-glucopyranoside was selected to compensate the matrix effect caused by insufficient acquisition of glycosidic volatiles during analyte preparation In all the ripe-fruit juice samples, the aglycons 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone and trans-2, cis-6-nonadienal were found to give high odor activity values. The electro-optical characteristics of nanoparticles-doped polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have been investigated for display applications. The PDLC samples were obtained by polymerization induced phase separation of the nematic liquid crystal LC-nanoparticles-prepolymer mixtures under UV illumination with a constant intensity. The effect of Al2O3 nanoparticles doping on the PDLC system was studied. It was seen that the electro-optical characteristics of PDLC were dependent on the amount of Al2O3 nanoparticles used. The effect of morphol. on the electro-optical properties was examined, and the exptl. results indicated that the driving voltage was affected considerably by the amount of Al2O3 nanoparticles. The results showed that the nanoparticles concentration can be optimized to obtain promising electronic materials with a min. threshold for display applications.

In this research, lipase Km12 was immobilized on the glutaraldehyde-activated graphene oxide/chitosan/cellulose acetate nanofibers (GO/Chit/CA NFs) prepared by the electrospinning method. This immobilized lipase exhibited a higher activity value than the free lipase in the acidic pH region. This enzyme showed a 10 °C shift in the maximum temperature activity. Results displayed that the Vmax value of NFs-lipase was 0.64 μmol/min, while it was gained 0.405 μmol/min for the free lipase. The activity of NFs-lipase was reserved 100% after 10 min maintaining at 60 °C, in which the free lipase only kept 75% of its original activity. Moreover, a 20% enhancement in the lipase activity was observed for NFs-lipase after 180 min of incubation at 60 °C, compared to the free enzyme. Reusability studies exhibited that the immobilized lipase well-kept 80% of its original activity after 10 cycles of reusing. Results displayed that 14% of the protein was leaked from NFs-lipase at the same condition. Transesterification results indicated that the free lipase exhibited 65% and 85% conversation level of benzyl acetate after 12 and 24 h of incubation. Besides, the immobilized lipase showed 80% and 95% conversation level at the same condition. These results indicated the high performance of free and immobilized lipase in the production of benzyl acetate for applications in the perfume and cosmetic industries.
