These are the geometric isomers and the alcs. of the main components, (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, and saturated acetates of 12-22 carbons. The ratios of Z9-14:Ac to Z11-14:Ac in individuals varied from 3.5:1 to 11:1 with an average of 6.2; their total added up to 462 ng/female with an average of 182 ng for 2- to 7-day-old individuals. No qual. or quant. differences were observed between laboratory and field insects. Z9-14:Ac, Z11-14:Ac and the corresponding alcs. were also found in female effluvia. Addition of either of the 2 alcs. to a blend of the 2 acetates augmented trap catch in the field. The same was true for (Z)-9,(E)-12-tetradecadienyl acetate which was not detected in gland extracts

We report a generalizable strategy to create topol. defects on chem. patterned surfaces to assemble particles in precisely defined locations with a tunable interparticle distance at nanoscale dimensions. Informed by exptl. observations and numerical simulations that indicate that liquid crystals, confined between a homeotropic-anchoring surface and a surface with lithog. defined planar-anchoring stripes in a homeotropic-anchoring background, display splay-bend deformation, we successfully create pairs of defects and subsequently trap particles with controlled spacing by designing patterns of intersecting stripes aligned at 45° with homeotropic-anchoring gaps at the intersections. Application of elec. fields allows for dynamic control of trapped particles. The tunability, responsiveness, and adaptability of this platform provide the opportunities for assembly of colloidal structures toward functional materials.

Crumb rubber obtained from scrap tires is greatly employed for the construction of different facilities for sport, recreational and other uses. However, in recent years the concern about their safety and the related adult and children exposure to these surfaces is growing. This study aims a thorough chem. characterization encompassing 42 hazardous compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, adipates, antioxidants and vulcanization agents in a wide range of crumb rubber from different surfaces. For the extraction of the target compounds, a method based on ultrasound-assisted extraction followed by gas chromatog.-tandem mass spectrometry (UAE-GC-MS/MS) was validated. Forty crumb rubber samples coming from synthetic turf football pitches, outdoor and indoor playgrounds, urban pavements, com. tiles and granulates, and scrap tires, were analyzed. In addition, green alternative materials, such as sand and artificial turf based on cork granulate infill were included to compare the levels of the target compounds with those of crumb rubber. Most of the analyzed recycled surfaces meet the recent limits proposed by the European Commission for rubber granulates and mulches, although they exceed in several cases the maximum levels allowed for rubber consumer products. Besides, most of the other target compounds, including several of them considered as endocrine disruptors, were detected in the analyzed samples, reaching ppm concentrations

Nowadays concern exists about the safety for both football players and the environment of recycled tire rubber used as infill in synthetic turf football pitches. In this study 40 target compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), plasticizers, antioxidants and vulcanization agents were determined in 50 synthetic football pitches of diverse characteristics to estimate environmental risks. This is the first study of crumb rubber sport facilities in Portugal. Analyses were performed by ultrasound-assisted extraction followed by gas chromatog.-tandem mass spectrometry (UAE-GC-MS/MS). To evaluate the transfer of the target chems. from the crumb rubber to the runoff water, water leachates collected from several football pitches were analyzed by solid-phase microextraction (SPME-GC-MS/MS). In addition, lab-scale runoff simulation experiments were performed to assess whether a persistent inflow of the target compounds from the football pitches into the runoff water wcould exist. Results revealed the presence of most of the target PAHs in crumb rubber at total concentrations up to 57μg g-1, next to a high number of plasticizers and vulcanization agents. Runoff water collected from the football pitches contained up to 13 PAHs as well as other chems. of environmental concern. In addition, continuous leaching of chems. from the crumb rubber to the surrounding water was demonstrated. The transfer of target chems. into the runoff water poses a potential risk for the aquatic environment.

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is native to the Americas and has recently invaded Okinawa, Japan via Africa, South Asia and China. Gas chromatog./mass spectrometry analyses of hexane extracts of 100 abdominal glands of Okinawan females revealed six candidate compounds for sex pheromone, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac, ca. 6 ng/female), (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:Ac), (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate, and (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol at the ratio of 100:10:1.3:0.90:0.13:1.8, resp. In Okinawa, only small numbers of males were captured with the original blend of these compounds However, much more males were attracted to a 100:3 blend of Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac that had been suggested by others to be the most effective blend in a Florida population. In another test in Okinawa, even more males were captured with a 100:1 blend of these compounds than with a 100:3 blend. Significant numbers of males of other moths, Mythimna loreyi (Duponchel) and Chrysodeixis eriosoma (Doubleday), were also attracted to blends of Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac when the ratio of the latter to the former compound was increased from 100:1 to 100:10. Based on these results we concluded that the most powerful as well as convenient sex pheromone formulation to monitor S. frugiperda populations in Okinawa was a 100:1 blend of Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac.
