Utilization of natural sustainable feedstock to fabricate polymers has attracted remarkable attention. In this work, we reported a strategy to prepare a series of grafted copolymers from rosin, fatty acids and Et cellulose. The process involved the preparation of EC-based macro-RAFT agent through a simple esterification reaction, followed by a “”grafting from”” reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) of DAGMA (derived from rosin) and LMA (derived from fatty acid) to achieve a class of EC-g-P(DAGMA-co-LMA) graft copolymers with a tunable Tg tuned by the DAGMA/LMA molar ratio. Then, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) was used to crosslink these graft copolymers. The mech. and dynamic thermo-mech. properties of tests showed that elastic recovery values of copolymers were enhanced to 90%, as compared to the un-crosslinked samples. Addnl., all these polymers showed an excellent UV absorption performance. This study provides a facile way to fabricate biobased elastomeric materials with improved mech. properties.

Scalable methods of producing functional materials is of importance. Herein, we report the use of free radical copolymerization of ω-unsaturated methacrylic macromonomers, as derived from catalytic chain transfer polymerization (CCTP), with acrylic monomers in solution leading to block copolymers by varying the nature of the macromonomer. We demonstrate the effect that varying the mol. weight and ester side chain length of macromonomer from CCTP, has on the polymerization leading to either graft or diblock copolymers. DOSY NMR, MALDI-ToF/ToF MS has allowed for the exploration of the extent to which varying the concentration of macromonomer has on the products formed. Importantly, during the successful synthesis of acrylic and methacrylic diblock copolymers with broad dispersities of each block, full consumption of the macromonomers was observed

The conventional strategy of synthetic colloidal chem. for bright and stable quantum dots has been the production of epitaxially matched core/shell heterostructures to mitigate the presence of deep trap states. This mindset has been shown to be incompatible with lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) due to their dynamic surface and low m.p. Nevertheless, enhancements to their chem. stability are still in great demand for the deployment of LHP NCs in light-emitting devices. Rather than contend with their attributes, we propose a method in which we can utilize their dynamic, ionic lattice and uniquely defect-tolerant band structure to prepare non-epitaxial salt-shelled heterostructures that are able to stabilize these materials against their environment, while maintaining their excellent optical properties and increasing scattering to improve out-coupling efficiency. To do so, anchored LHP NCs are first synthesized through the heterogeneous nucleation of LHPs onto the surface of microcrystalline carriers, such as alkali halides. This first step stabilizes the LHP NCs against further merging, and this allows them to be coated with an addnl. inorganic shell through the surface-mediated reaction of amphiphilic Na and Br precursors in apolar media. These inorganically shelled NC@carrier composites offer significantly improved chem. stability toward polar organic solvents, such as γ-butyrolactone, acetonitrile, N-methylpyrrolidone, and trimethylamine, demonstrate high thermal stability with photoluminescence intensity reversibly dropping by no more than 40% at temperatures up to 120 °C, and improve compatibility with various UV-curable resins. This mindset for LHP NCs creates opportunities for their successful integration into next-generation light-emitting devices.

Novel degradable and chem. recyclable polymers were synthesized using five-membered cyclic ketene hemiacetal ester (CKHE) monomers. The studied monomers were 4,4-dimethyl-2-methylene-1,3-dioxolan-5-one (DMDL) and 5-methyl-2-methylene-5-phenyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one (PhDL). The two monomers were synthesized in high yields (80-90%), which is an attractive feature. DMDL afforded its homopolymer with a relatively high mol. weight (Mn >100 000, where Mn is the number-average mol. weight). DMDL and PhDL were copolymerized with various families of vinyl monomers, i.e., methacrylates, acrylates, styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl pyrrolidinone, and acrylamide, and various functional methacrylates and acrylate. Such a wide scope of the accessible polymers is highly useful for material design. The obtained homopolymers and random copolymers of DMDL degraded in basic conditions (in the presence of a hydroxide or an amine) at relatively mild temperatures (room temperature to 65°C). The degradation of the DMDL homopolymer generated 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid (HIBA). The generated HIBA was recovered and used as an ingredient to re-synthesize DMDL monomer, and this monomer was further used to re-synthesize the DMDL polymer, demonstrating the chem. recycling of the DMDL polymer. Such degradability and chem. recyclability of the DMDL polymer may contribute to the circular materials economy.

A functional copolymer viscosity reducer based on mol. dynamics simulations was synthesized using monomers of mixed ester, 4-vinylpyridine, and styrene. The possible structure and number of hydrogen bonds within the complex structure of heavy oil were simulated and analyzed after the copolymer was added. Results showed that the number of hydrogen bonds in asphaltene in the simulation structure decreased from 36 to 28 per unit volume with the addition of the copolymer. The original plane overlap structure of asphaltene was damaged as soon as interactions occurred between the asphaltene and copolymer mol. The potential energy of the system was higher with the addition of the copolymer, while the non-bond energy difference of the two systems was not obvious. The stereohindrance effect of the copolymer viscosity reducer mols. either broke or improved the interlocking structures of the asphaltene, helping to decrease the viscosity of the heavy oil.

There have been no reports published on the rare Echinops taeckholmiana growing wildly in Egypt. So, this study aimed to preserve it through method optimization of in vitro seed germination, besides callus formation from induced seedlings. Chem. profiling using gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) anal. of the n-hexane fraction afforded 29 identified components, mainly fatty acids esters, sesquiterpenes, triterpenes, one thiophene, and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. Ultra-performance liquid chromatog.-electron spray ionization/tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI/MS-MS) anal. of total alc. root and induced calli extracts resulted in 68 metabolites. Taraxeryl acetate, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol-3β-D-glucoside, and 1,1,1-kestopentaose were identified from the defatted root extract, which inhibited α-amylase (IC50 54.6 μg/mL) and α-glucosidase (60.4 μg/mL) enzymes compared with acarbose (IC50 values of 30.57 and 34.71 μg/mL, resp.). Moreover, it showed moderate activity against HepG2 (IC50 31.1 ± 1.4 μg/mL) and no activity against M-NFS-60 cell lines compared to cisplatin (IC50 3.25 ± 1.4 and 8.37 ± 0.25, resp.).

Blueberry wine has an excessively sour taste due to the presence of high-level of organic acids. Pichia fermentans JT-1-3 with a strong ability to degrade citric acid was selected for blueberry wine production in this work. The flocculation of JT-1-3 in comparison with two S. cerevisiaes strains was evaluated. Then citric acid degradation of JT-1-3 was assessed in synthetic media with different citric acid/glucose ratios under shaking or static conditions. Finally, JT-1-3 was inoculated in blueberry juice for fermentation The results confirmed that JT-1-3 had appropriate flocculation and consumed citric acid and glucose greatly. In final wines, 6.25% (volume/volume) alc. was achieved with 1.83% (weight/weight) residual sugar. Compared with juice, citric, malic and tartaric acids declined significantly by 43.35%, 35.29% and 44.68% in wine, resp. 2-phenylethanol, Et 9-hexadecenoate, Et decanoate were the main volatiles in blueberry wine and most esters contributed to the aroma with high odor activity values. Sensory evaluation showed that wine produced by JT-1-3 imparted improved taste with lower acidity, bitterness and hotness perceptions compared with S. cerevisiae fermentation This work revealed that JT-1-3 had a great potential to be applied for blueberry wine fermentation along with deacidification.

The development of reverse demulsifier is an urgent need for the increasing amount of produced liquid in oilfield. Synthesis of reverse demulsifier containing multiple characteristics is an effective method. In view of this, this study reports a series of cationic polyacrylates as the reverse demulsifiers, which were prepared by using 3-chloro-1-propanol to modify the copolymer of acrylate and N-[3-(dimethylamino) propyl] methacryamide (DMAPMA). The properties and performance tests showed that the PMD1 prepared by using Me acrylate (MA) as monomer (mass ratio of MA to DMAPMA was 2:1) has well water solubility, high interfacial activity, and the best demulsification efficiency. For treating the produced liquid from an offshore oilfield, demulsification efficiency of PMD1 was 94.7% with 50 mg/L dosage, which was much higher than that of the reagent in use (15.7%). Furthermore, the demulsification mechanism of PMD1 was studied by oil-water partition coefficient experiment, zeta potential measurement, optical tweezers method, elastic modulus measurement, and coalescence kinetics experiment Prominent demulsification ability of PMD1 was attributed to the synergistic effect of adsorption bridging via cationic group and oil/water interfacial film breaking by acrylate group. The cationic polyacrylate combines the advantages of polyacrylate and polycation reverse demulsifiers, which display a great application prospect in the petroleum industry.

Abstract: Amphiphilic copolymer mol. brushes of three different types with side chains consisting of alkyl and oligo(ethylene glycol) blocks based on higher alkoxy oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylates (HAOEGM), methoxy oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylates (MOEGM) and dodecyl(meth)acrylate have been successfully synthesized via conventional radical polymerization in toluene. In case of the copolymerization of HAOEGM with MOEGM, the monomer reactivity ratios were independent of the structure of higher alkyl groups (C12-C18) and the degree of ethoxylation (n = 6-11) and were equal to 0.76-0.81 and 1.19-1.27, resp. In case of the copolymerization of HAOEGM or MOEGM with dodecyl methacrylate, the reactivity ratios were even closer to each other (1.00-1.17). Applicability of the reactivity ratios calculated at low conversions for estimating copolymer compositions at high conversions was shown. In all systems, compositionally homogeneous copolymers with a narrow mol. weight distribution were formed. For the HAOEGM (C12, n = 9)-dodecyl acrylate monomer system, the reactivity ratios were 0.88 and 0.25 and the resulting copolymers had high compositional heterogeneity.

In this study, four methods including urea complexation (UC), mol. distillation (MD), low-temperature crystallization (LTC), and Ag+ bonded to mercaptopropyl silica gel column chromatog. (AgMSG-CC) were adopted to purify eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from sardine oil Et esters (SOEEs). These methods were systematically compared in terms of physicochem. properties, fatty acid (FA) compositions, and volatile flavor compounds to evaluate the performance and find the superior among them. The AgMSG-CC method was superior in enhancing iodine value (IV) and reducing peroxide value (PV), enriching EPA and DHA from 31.63% to 92.19% and removing undesirable volatiles. Its mild exptl. conditions could avoid the degradation and geometrical isomerization of lipids, and the packed AgMSG column could be reused. Multivariate data anal. was applied to provide an integrated and holistic view of correlation coefficients between the samples and FA species. The results supported the critical role of AgMSG-CC method in purifying EPA and DHA. Finally, this method was validated to be accurate and sensitive in the purification of EPA and DHA from SOEEs. Practical applications : High quality of fish oil is related to its high content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and friendly aroma. However, enrichment methods about purifying fish oil affect the percentages of EPA and DHA, physicochem. indexes and the volatile flavor. In this study, the results demonstrated that Ag+ bonded to mercaptopropyl silica gel column chromatog. was the most effective to purify EPA and DHA as well as remove the undesirable odor volatiles.
