Superhydrophobic and liquid-infused porous coatings provide effective repellency against contaminations and ensure efficient performance of surfaces in a wide range of applications. Conventional fabrication processes of such coatings typically require fluorinated components, toxic solvents, and elevated temperatures, and therefore contribute to environmental pollution. Here, we present a dispersion-based, fluorine-free coating system that produces highly repellent surface coatings at ambient conditions. Our system is based on aqueous dispersions of a polymeric binder and hydrophobic fumed silica particles, which upon drying self-organize into a micro- and nanostructured thin film with superhydrophobic properties, characterized by a water contact angle above 150° and a contact angle hysteresis below 10°. An addnl. dispersion-based coating step allows infusing these structures with silicone oil, thus producing a lubricant-infused repellent coating mimicking the pitcher plant. Water droplets on such coatings exhibit efficient repellency properties, characterized by low sliding angles (<5°) and contact angle hysteresis of water droplets (<10°). Our method provides a versatile, dispersion-based toolbox to create functional, repellent coatings in a simple, scalable and environmentally benign process. Mech. vibration energy-driven self-assembly of microplatelets at the water-air interface of inverted water droplets is demonstrated, and the real-time formation process of the patterned structure is dynamically explored. 40 kHz ultrasonic wave is transferred into microplatelets suspended in a water environment to drive the self-assembly of predesigned well-ordered structures. Two-dimensional self-assembly of microplatelets inside the water phase with a large patterned area is achieved. Stable three-dimensional multi-layered self-assembled structures are quickly formed at the air-water interface. These demonstrations aim to open distinctive and effective ways for new two-dimensional surface coating technol. with autonomous organization strategy, and three-dimensional complex hierarchical architectures built by the bottom-up method and commonly found in nature (such as nacre, bone or enamel, etc.).

Polymer networks cross-linked by reversible metal-ligand interactions possess versatile mech. properties achieved simply by varying the metal species and quantity. Although prior experiments have revealed the dependence of the network’s viscoelastic behavior on the dynamics of metal-ligand interaction, a theor. framework with quant. relations that would enable efficient material design, is still lacking. One major challenge is isolating the effect of metal-ligand interaction from other factors in the polymer matrix. To address this challenge, we designed a linear precursor free from solvents, chain entanglements and polymer-metal phase separation to ensure that relaxation of the network is mainly governed by the dissociation and association of the metal-ligand cross-links. The rheol. behavior of the networks was thoroughly characterized regarding the changes in cross-link d., binding stoichiometry and coordination stability, allowing quant. comparison between exptl. results and the sticky Rouse model. Through this process, we noticed that the presence of reversible cross-links increases the network modulus at high frequency compared to the linear polymer, and that the effective metal-ligand dissociation time increases dramatically with increasing the cross-link d. Informed by these findings, we modified the expression of the sticky Rouse model. For the polymer in which the metal center and ligands bond in a paired association, the relaxation follows our enhanced sticky Rouse model. For the polymer in which each reversible cross-link consists of multiple metal centers and ligands, the relaxation timescale is significantly extended due to greater restriction on the polymer chains. This systematic study bridges experiments and theory, providing deeper understanding of the mech. properties of metallopolymers and facilitating material design.

A novel synthetic strategy gives reversible crosslinked polymeric materials with tunable fluorescence properties. Dimaleimide-substituted tetraphenylethene (TPE-2MI), which is non-emissive owing to the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) between maleimide (MI) and tetraphenylethene (TPE) groups, was used to crosslink random copolymers of Me (MM), decyl (DM) or lauryl (LM) methacrylate with furfuryl methacrylate (FM). The mixture of copolymer and TPE-2MI in DMF showed reversible fluorescence with “”on/off”” behavior depending on the Diels-Alder (DA)/retro-DA process, which is easily adjusted by temperature At high temperatures, the retro-DA reaction is dominant, and the fluorescence is quenched by the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. In contrast, at low temperatures, the emission recovers as the DA reaction takes over. A transparent PMFM/TPE-2MI polymer film was prepared which shows an accurate response to the external temperature and exhibited tunable fluorescent “”turn on/off”” behavior. These results suggest the possible application in areas including information security and transmission. An example of invisible/visible writing is given.

In organic synthesis and polymer materials chem., a tert-butoxycarbonyl (BOC) group is often used as one of tools for the protection of functional groups. In this study, we carried out radical polymerization of 2-(tert-butoxycarbonyloxy)ethyl methacrylate (BHEMA) and copolymerizations of BHEMA with Me methacrylate (MMA), Bu methacrylate (nBMA), iso-Bu methacrylate (iBMA), tert-Bu methacrylate (tBMA), dodecyl methacrylate (DMA), α-methylstyrene (AMS), and limonene (Lim) as the 1,1-disubstituted ethylene monomers and investigated the thermal decomposition behavior of the obtained polymers. On the basis of the results of thermogravimetric (TG) anal. in nitrogen at the heating rate of 10 °C/min, it was revealed that the deprotection of the BOC group in the polymer side chains occurred at ca. 200 °C accompanying the quant. elimination of isobutene and carbon dioxide, independent of the structures of the repeating units. The following main-chain decomposition of the residual copolymers resulted in a small amount of residue less than 1% at 500 °C. Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was synthesized via the deprotection of the BOC group of PBHEMA.

The preparation of dynamic networks from lignin with multipurpose and multifunctional practical applications is highly desirable but still challenging. In this study, the combination of a “”grafting from”” reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and dynamic chem. was utilized to synthesize lignin based dynamic networks. Vanillin, a derived chem. from lignin, was used as a building block to realize the structural reorganization of lignin via RAFT polymerization, together with fatty acid derivative as the comonomer. NMR anal. confirmed the expected structures. It was demonstrated that the physicochem. properties of grafted lignin were adjustable depending on polymerization reaction conditions. Due to the presence of aldehyde groups from vanillin moiety, a dynamic network was produced by using diamines as crosslinkers. The mech. properties were also tunable via controlling the structure of crosslinkers. The crosslinked lignin-based dynamic networks exhibited various interesting properties, such as recyclability and UV-adsorption ability. In addition, it could be used as self-healing, antifungal and conductive adhesives. The shear strength after first time self-healing could reach 2.9 MPa, which was 83.1% of the pristine adhesion. This damage and repair process could be carried out at least four times under relatively low temperature (80°C) and pressure (1.0 MPa). More importantly, antifungal activity was observed for the self-healing adhesive, which might enlarge its applications. Addnl., after the addition of carbon nanotubes, the generated conductive adhesive was weldable without compromising its conductivity This study has demonstrated the potential of lignin to synthesize high value-added materials, which could be appealing to both biorefinery and materials society.

The three instant dark teas were produced from instant green tea (IGT) by liquid-state fermentations using the microorganisms Eurotium cristatum (EFT), Aspergillus niger (AFT), and sequential inoculation of E. cristatum/A. niger (EAFT), resp. The volatile compounds of four tea samples were extracted by headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and analyzed using gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) coupled with chemometrics. A total of 97 volatile compounds were tentatively identified to distinguish three fermented instant dark from IGT. Alcs., acids, esters, ketones, aldehydes, and heterocyclics could be clearly distinguished by principal component anal. (PCA), venn diagram, heatmap anal. and hierarchical cluster anal. (HCA). Descriptive sensory anal. revealed that AFT had a moldy, woody and herbal aroma; EFT showed woody and herbal aroma; and EAFT smelled an herbal, sweet, minty and floral aroma. This study indicates that fermentation using different microorganisms is critical in forming unique aroma characteristics of instant dark teas.
