A new biodegradable antioxidant active packaging for food applications based on antioxidants from medicinal and aromatic plants incorporated into a polylactic acid matrix was designed and developed. Melt blending processing technique was applied to prepare polylactic acid films loaded by sage and lemon balm leaves. Antioxidant properties of developed active films were investigated using the following methods- 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), 2,2-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)hydrazyl and a home-made generator of hydroxyl radicals. In addition, reducing power and total phenolic content of polylactic acid films were checked. The results of antioxidant capacity showed that percentage of hydroxylation for active film with lemon balm and sage was 55.5% ± 0.1% and 67.4% ± 0.3%, resp. The reducing power of active films increased 8 times in comparison to the blank samples. Moreover, extensive investigation of influence of sage and lemon balm leaves on material safety and type of migrants was performed using migration assays. The composition of both non-volatile and volatile compounds of different active packaging films was compared with neat polylactic acid film. Three different food simulants such as 95% (volume/volume) ethanol, 10% (volume/volume) ethanol and 3% (w/v) acetic acid were checked. It was shown that the addition of sage and lemon balm leaves into a polylactic acid structure decreased the migration of both linear and cyclic polylactic acid oligomers, currently not legislated by European Union. Besides, total absence or decrease of migration of volatile compounds were observed when using the active films. Both thermal and mech. properties of films were also evaluated.

The commercialization and popularization of biodiesel are mainly restricted by the utilization in cold areas and long-term storage due to the poor low-temperature fluidity and oxidation stability. In order to synchronously improve the low-temperature fluidity and oxidation stability of biodiesel, a bifunctional polymethacrylate (PMA) type copolymer was synthesized by grafting amine antioxidant 1-phenylnaphthylamine onto PMA originally. The grafted copolymers showed excellent performance in reducing the cold filter plugging point (CFPP) and pour point (PP) of B20 (20 vol% soybean biodiesel +80 vol% diesel fuel) and the maximum reduction were 13 and 10°C resp. at the addition of 1500 ppm, which exhibited lower values of 5-8°C and 4-6°C resp. than un-grafted copolymers. The induction period (IP) of B20 treated with 2000 ppm of grafted copolymers was prolonged by 17 h compared with pure B20. In addition, the attenuation of the cold flow properties of B20 samples during the oxidation process was studied, and the mechanism of bifunctional copolymer to improve the properties of B20 was explored.

To study oil displacement agent suitable for enhanced heavy oil recovery and investigate the effect of EO chain length on the performances, acrylamide, acrylic acid, lauryl methacrylate and C10-C16 alkylphenol ethoxylates were selected to co-polymerize into the active polymer PAAP-x with different EO chain length (14, 16, 18, 20 and 22). Proton NMR anal. indicated PAAP-x as the target product. The optimal EO chain length of PAAP-x was determined to be 18 by the anal. of thickening, salt-tolerance, interfacial activity, wettability, viscosity reduction and recovery. Compared with conventional polymer P1, 1500 mg/L PAAP-18 exhibited superior performances with salinity of 6882.2 mg/L: (1) PAAP-18 could maintain the viscosity of 113.1 mPa.s, while P1was 44.8 mPa.s. (2) PAAP-18 could reduce the water-oil IFT from 44.4 mN/m to 13.0 mN/m, while P1 was to 30.6 mN/m, and the water-oil contact angle was 58.2°and 108.5°, resp. (3) The heavy oil viscosity reduction rate of PAAP-18 was 81.7% at 50 °C, while P1 was only 33.8%. (4) PAAP-18 enhanced heavy oil recovery by 19.85% on the basis of water flooding while conventional polymer was only 8.69%. This study has theor. guidance and practical significance for the study on new oil displacement agent to enhance heavy oil recovery.

Innovative thermal management materials are in high demand for construction of energy-efficient systems. Evaporative cooling hydrogel has been extensively investigated in passive building cooling owing to its cost-effective and environmental-friendly characteristics. However, poor mech. properties and shape instability severely restrict its scope and lifespan. In this study, we report an ingenious and effective thermal management material, the PCMs organohydrogel, with advanced thermal performance and outstanding shape and thermal stability, which integrates the advantages of evaporative cooling performance of water and latent heat storage capability of eicosane. The biphasic PCMs organohydrogel was synthesized by the CAA-HRP-H2O2 ternary enzyme-mediated polymerization of the eicosane-in-water emulsion stabilized by the cellulose acetoacetate (CAA). CAA played important roles in the system not only as the emulsifier but also as the polymerization mediator. The encapsulation of PCMs by the organohydrogel provides the composites outstanding thermal stability as the decomposition temperature of the eicosane was elevated by 101 °C. Furthermore, the PCMs organohydrogel exhibits excellent thermomech. performance and shape memory effect because of the wrapped phase-transition micro-inclusions and the interfacial tension of heterophases. The application of the PCMs organohydrogel as passive cooling material on the model house roof was demonstrated. The cooling effectiveness of the PCMs organohydrogel was investigated, indicating that the biphasic PCMs organohydrogel is expected to be an efficient and reliable passive thermal management material in building thermoregulations.
