Hydrated salts (salt hydrates) are highly promising low-temperature phase change materials (PCMs) due to their high cohesive energy d. and low cost. However, they exhibit phase separation, liquid leakage, and inherent supercooling, which hinder their applications in sustainable building technol. Here, we describe the design of a highly stable emulsion gel system (EmulGels) that exhibits nonflammable and shape-memory characteristics. Oleophilic paraffin and hydrophilic hydrated salts, both of which are excellent PCMs typically existing in sep. phases, are combined harmoniously in a gel by a templating water-in-oil Pickering emulsion. Latent heat values of the prepared EmulGels were up to 213.2 J/g (eicosane/disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate = 1:3). No leakage of eicosane was noticed after heating the EmulGels at 60 °C for 30 min, and the latent heat value remained almost unchanged following 500 thermal cycles. The EmulGel was specifically designed to enable dual-phase crosslinking, which effectively enhanced its shape stability, slowed down loss of water of crystallization in hydrated salts, and decreased the degree of supercooling. Nonflammable characteristic typically found in hydrated salts was also exhibited by the EmulGel, in combination with good mech. properties. The materials characteristics make EmulGels ideal candidates to serve as building construction interlayers for effective thermal building management.

Based on the host vinyl-ether liquid crystals, the polymer dispersed vinyl-ether liquid crystals (PDVLC), polymer dispersed crosslinked vinyl-ether liquid crystals (PDCVLC) and fluorine-containing polymer dispersed crosslinked vinyl-ether liquid crystals (F-PDCVLC) QDs films were fabricated in succession by dual-step polymerization As a result, the PDVLC film can realize fluorescence enhancement and tuning, whereas the PDCVLC film not only maintain fluorescence enhancement of PDVLC film but also improve the water-resistant performance. More importantly, the formation of crosslinked film makes it convenient to fabricate QDs film. Subsequently, the F-PDCVLC film can further improve the water-resistant properties by introducing fluorine-containing monomers to enhance the hydrophobic performance. This free-standing (F-) PDCVLC film may offer a new avenue to realize the optimization of QDs film performance.

Herein, we developed selective coupling and polymerization systems of folded polymer micelles via phys. interaction in water. The polymer micelles serve as nanodomains to provide double core micelles, alternating necklace micelles, and micelle-connected hydrogels. For this, cation- or anion-tail unimer micelles and amine- or carboxy-tail unimer micelles were designed; the unimer micelles consist of folded amphiphilic random copolymers carrying hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) and hydrophobic or hydrogen-bonding pendants. Mixing a cation-tail micelle and an anion-tail micelle, and even the combination of a double cation-tail micelle and a double anion-tail micelle, selectively provided double-core micelles in water without forming large aggregates. Double core micelles afforded structural transformation into linear or cyclic polymers and dynamic exchange of the micelle domains. In contrast, mixing amine-tail micelles and carboxy-tail micelles gave an alternating necklace micelle or a hydrogel. The controlled connection of polymer micelles was achieved by designing suitable phys. interaction. This technique opened new ways to create various nanodomain self-assemblies with controlled higher-order structure.

Triazole pesticides are widely used to control grapevine diseases. In this study, we investigated the impact of three triazole pesticides-triadimefon, tebuconazole, and paclobutrazol-on the concentrations of wine aroma compounds All three triazole pesticides significantly affected the ester and acid aroma components. Among them, paclobutrazol exhibited the greatest neg. influence on the wine aroma quality through its effect on the ester and acid aroma substances, followed by tebuconazole and triadimefon. Qual. and quant. anal. by solid-phase micro-extraction gas chromatog. coupled with mass spectrometry revealed that the triazole pesticides also changed the flower and fruit flavor component contents of the wines. This was attributed to changes in the yeast fermentation activity caused by the pesticide residues. The study reveals that triazole pesticides neg. impact on the volatile composition of wines with a potential undesirable effect on wine quality, underlining the desirability of stricter control by the food industry over pesticide residues in winemaking.

In this study, we designed an amphiphilic block copolymer system based on HPMA using different strategies to introduce the highly reactive click units 1,2,4,5-tetrazines (Tz) either at the chain end (Tz-CTA) or statistical into the hydrophobic block. This reactive group undergoes a rapid, bioorthogonal inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction (iEDDA) with trans-cyclooctenes (TCO). Subsequently, this polymer platform was used for the preparation of different Tz-covered nanoparticles, such as micelles and colloids. Thereby it was found that the reactivity of the polymeric micelles is comparable to that of the low molar mass tetrazines. The core-cross-linked micelles can be successfully conjugated at rather low concentrations to large biomacromols. like antibodies, not only in physiol. buffer, but also in human blood plasma, which was confirmed by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy.

The alternative striped structure consists of the polymethacrylate backbone and stilbene-containing side chain. The approach is general toward stilbene-containing block copolymer LC nanowires, irrelevant with the composition of stabilizer blocks. The nanowires become robust with the layered structure preserved after crosslinking via dimerization upon UV irradiation The nanowires reported here may provide one-dimensional model blocks toward superstructures, which can be used in the fields of elec. nanoconductors, functional additives, etc.

The hydrogels exhibit excellent mech. adaptability similar to human skin, including low modulus, excellent stretchability, robust elasticity, rapid self-recoverability and good antifatigue property. Moreover, the addition of LiCl gives hydrogel ideal ionic conducive behavior as high-performance wearable sensors. The hydrogel-based sensor exhibits high sensitivity (GF=5.44) at a broad strain window (0.25-2000%), excellent pressure sensing capability, rapid response time, negligible hysteresis and good durability. As a result, the hydrogel sensor can monitor various human motions, including large-scale joint bending, running and jumping, as well as tiny phonating and breathing. Therefore, the strategy will broaden the path for new generation of biomimetic sensors with skin-like mech. and strain and pressure sensing performances.

For the first system, RAFT dispersion polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GlyMA) was conducted using a poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA63) precursor. The second system involved statistical copolymerization of GlyMA with lauryl methacrylate to produce a P(LMA50-stat-GlyMA9) precursor followed by chain extension using Me methacrylate (MMA). 1H NMR studies and THF GPC anal. indicated that high monomer conversions (â‰?95%) and narrow mol. weight distributions (Mw/Mn â‰?1.17) were obtained for both formulations. Dynamic light scattering indicated hydrodynamic diameters of 26 nm and 28 nm for P(LMA50-stat-GlyMA9)-PMMA67 and PLMA63-PGlyMA89 spheres, resp. Transmission electron microscopy studies confirmed a well-defined spherical morphol. in each case. Post-polymerization modification of these spherical nanoparticles was examined by reacting the epoxy groups with benzylamine. For the PLMA63-PGlyMA89 spheres, an [amine]/[epoxy] molar ratio of unity was sufficient to react all the epoxy groups. In contrast, the P(LMA50-stat-GlyMA9)-PMMA67 spheres required a fifty-fold excess of benzylamine for complete reaction. Furthermore, epoxy ring-opening reactions were conducted using either a trace amount of water or 50% volume/volume aqueous acetic acid at 110°C.

Improvement of the efficacy of radiotherapy for lung cancer and glioblastoma is urgently needed. We synthesized several novel DNA methyltransferase inhibitors and evaluated their potentials as possible radiosensitizers. Eleven non-nucleoside compounds were synthesized and evaluated along with one known compound using human lung cancer (A549) and glioblastoma (U373MG) cells. Cytotoxicity and radiosensitizing effects were evaluated using clonogenic assay. Sensitizer enhancement ratios at a survival fraction of 0.5 were calculated, and statistical anal. was performed using the ratio paired t-test. The inhibitory effects of three selected compounds on the activity of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) and the pharmacokinetic profiles were analyzed. All twelve compounds demonstrated various levels of cytotoxicity. Of the twelve compounds, eleven and eight compounds radiosensitized A549 and U373MG cells, resp., with at least marginal significance (p<0.10). The sensitizer enhancement ratios in A549 and U373MG ranged 1.166-2.537 and 1.083-1.743 among compounds with radiosensitizing effects, resp. The three selected compounds inhibited DNMT1 activity by 26.5-78.5%. Elimination half-lives ranged from 0.3 to 1.3 h. Novel DNA methyltransferase inhibitors with significant radiosensitizing capacity and improved biostability were synthesized. These materials will serve as a basis for the development of novel radiosensitizers. The nephroprotective potential of the extract was screened at 200 and 400mg/kg b. w. in both curative and prophylactic regimens in male Albino rats. Nephrotoxicity was induced by single i.p. injection of cisplatin at a dose of 5 mg/kg b.w. The nephroprotective activity was assessed by determining serum markers, urinary parameters, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant levels and his to pathol. studies in renal tissue. Upon preliminary phytochem. screening, the ethanol extract showed the presence of Proteins, flavonoids, Tannins, Terpenoids. HPTLC anal. resulted in a fingerprint of extract showing the presence of 14 compounds TLC and HPLC revealed the presence of quercetin, and GC-MS anal. showed the presence of 80 different phytochems. Pharmacol. studies revealed that administration of extract significantly attenuated the cisplatin- induced nephrotoxicity remarkably by restoring the biochem. and oxidative stress markers in both curative and prophylactic regimens in dose-dependent manner. Thus, the findings of the present study provided the phytochem. profile and validated the ethnomedicinal use of fruits of Grewia tiliaefolia as a renoprotective agent.
