The advent of hydrogel-based strain sensors has attracted immense research interest in artificial intelligence, wearable devices, and health-monitoring systems. However, the integration of the synergistic characteristics of good mech. properties, self-adhesiveness, self-healing capability and high strain sensitivity for fabricating hydrogel-based strain sensors is still a challenge. Here, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel composed of a polyacrylamide (PAAm)/chitosan (CS) hybrid network is fabricated for wearable strain sensors. The PAAm network is cross-linked by hydrophobic associations, and the CS network is ionically cross-linked by carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs). These two networks are further interlocked by phys. entanglement and hydrogen bond interactions. The obtained hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility, puncture resistance and self-healing capability because of the efficient energy dissipation of the dynamic crosslinking network. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibit self-adhesive behavior on various materials, including polytetrafluoroethylene, wood, glass, aluminum, rubber and skin. Notably, the hydrogels can be applied as soft human-motion sensors for real-time and accurate detection of both large-scale and small human activities, including joint motions, speaking, breathing, and even subtle blood pulsation. Therefore, it is anticipated that the flexible, self-adhesive, self-healing and conductive hydrogel-based strain sensor will have promising applications in artificial intelligence, soft robots, biomimetic prostheses, and personal health care.

In this work, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and Schiff base chem. was combined to fabricate self-healing adhesives. An esterification reaction was first performed to prepare Et cellulose based macroinitiators. Then, a “”grafting from”” RAFT of vanillin methacrylate and lauryl methacrylate was used to obtain graft copolymers. DSC result showed that the glass transition temperature was manipulated via changing the ratio of vanillin and fatty acids moieties. NMR spectrum anal. demonstrated the presence of aldehyde groups, which were available for the dynamic crosslinking to generate a network as self-healing adhesives. The adhesive test showed that the shear strength could reach 0.81 MPa with a self-healing efficiency of 98.7%. The bottlebrush structures of copolymers and reversibility of Schiff base chem. might collaboratively contribute to the high self-healing efficiency. This study provides a facile way to fabricate high-performance self-healing adhesives from Et cellulose and renewable resources.

Sterically-stabilized diblock copolymer nanoparticles (a.k.a. micelles) are prepared directly in non-polar media via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). More specifically, a poly(lauryl methacrylate) chain transfer agent is chain-extended via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization of Me methacrylate (MMA) to form sterically-stabilized spheres at 20% weight/weight solids in n-dodecane at 90°. Both fully hydrogenous (PLMA39-PMMA55 and PLMA39-PMMA94) and core-deuterated (PLMA39-d8PMMA57 and PLMA39-d8PMMA96) spherical nanoparticles with mean core diameters of approx. 20 nm were prepared using this protocol. After diluting each dispersion in turn to 1.0% weight/weight with n-dodecane, small-angle X-ray scattering studies confirmed essentially no change in spherical nanoparticle diameter after thermal annealing at 150°. Time-resolved small angle neutron scattering was used to examine whether copolymer chain exchange occurs between such nanoparticles at elevated temperatures Copolymer chain exchange for a binary mixture of PLMA39-PMMA55 and PLMA39-d8PMMA57 nanoparticles produced hybrid (mixed) cores containing both PMMA55 and d8PMMA57 blocks within 3 min at 150°. In contrast, a binary mixture of PLMA39-PMMA94 and PLMA39-d8PMMA96 nanoparticles required 8 min at this temperature before no further reduction in neutron scattering intensity could be observed These observations suggest that the rate of copolymer chain exchange depends on the d.p. of the core-forming block. Relatively slow copolymer chain exchange was also observed at 80°, which is below the Tg of the core-forming PMMA block as determined by DSC studies. These observations confirm rapid exchange of individual copolymer chains between sterically-stabilized nanoparticles at elevated temperature The implications of these findings are briefly discussed in the context of PISA, which is a powerful technique for the synthesis of sterically-stabilized nanoparticles.

We aimed to develop a sustainable adsorbent for bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor that seriously threatens human health. First, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was reacted with 2-bromoisobutyrylbromide to obtain a surface initiator (SI) for the grafting of polystyrene (PS), poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA), and poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDM) through ARGET-ATRP. These polymers may have favorably interacted with BPA, which led to its removal. SIs were characterized by FTIR and XPS to corroborate the grafting of 2-bromoisobutyryl and determine its abundance. X-ray diffraction anal. indicated retained crystal morphol. with decreased MCC crystallinity. FTIR, thermogravimetric, and elemental analyses confirmed the grafting of MCC with polymers and revealed their composition PS and PLMA had a minor effect on the crystallinity and morphol. of MCC microfibers, whereas grafting PDM decreased the crystallinity of cellulose and the particle size. MCC grafted with polymers were tested as adsorbents of BPA by measuring the equilibrium uptake and removal through column filtration. PDM was found to endow cellulose with superior capacity of removing BPA, which was enhanced with increased amount of grafted polymer. A comparison of MCC grafted with PDM with activated carbon as adsorbents of BPA suggested the superior performance of the developed materials based on the largest maximum uptake.

A luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) consists of loaded luminophores and a waveguide that can concentrate direct and diffuse sunlight, which is a crucial ingredient for developing solar glasses. In general, the loading concentration in LSCs is strongly restricted (typically <1 weight%) to mitigate concentration-induced quenching (CIQ), reabsorption losses, and aggregation-induced scattering (AIS). However, this will induce transmission losses in particular for thin-film LSCs. To address all aforementioned issues, large-Stoke-shift LSCs with different loadings are simply prepared based on thiolated gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) dispersed in the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) matrix. In contrast to conventional luminophores with a severe CIQ effect, photoluminescence quantum yields (PL-QYs) can be significantly enhanced up to ≈25% (from 0.5 to 1%) even under high loading of ≈26 weight%. Such PL-QY enhancement is attributed to the synergistic effects of the suppression of non-radiative relaxation and enhancement of radiative decay processes due to surface ligand-matrix coordination. In addition, our high-loading LSCs also exhibit excellent optical quality and film uniformity without introducing noticeable AIS effects. Thanks to those unique properties, eco-friendly LSCs with high optical d. can still hold a high edge-emission efficiency of ≈70% due to minimal reabsorption and scattering losses, yielding an external quantum efficiency of ≈15% at the wavelength of 400 nm. The analyses reveal only very low amounts of plasma proteins associated with the micelles. Notably, no significant enrichment of plasma proteins is detectable for core-crosslinked micelles, while noncrosslinked micelles show a significant enrichment of plasma proteins, indicative of protein corona formation. The results indicate that preventing the reorganization of micelles (equilibrium with unimers) by core-crosslinking is crucial to reduce the interaction with plasma proteins.

When THF was used as the co-solvent, the surface area of the highly porous microspheres achieved higher than 400 m2·g1. Solvothermal precipitation co-polymerization can be expected in scale-up fabrication of various monodisperse functional microspheres free of any surfactant and additive.
