The friction properties of a dilute solution of block copolymer additives in poly-α-olefin (PAO) confined between mica surfaces were investigated using the surface forces apparatus Friction measurements were made for poly(11-acrylamidoundecanoic acid)-block-poly(alkyl methacrylate)-block-poly(11-acrylamidoundecanoic acid) with an alkyl chain length of C12 (A5L946A5) in the poly(alkyl methacrylate) blocks. The results were compared to those for a PAO solution of a similar triblock copolymer with an alkyl chain length of C18 (A5S992A5) examined in our previous work (Yamada et al., Langmuir 2015). The friction coefficient μ for A5L946A5/PAO was approx. 0.5, which was one or two orders of magnitude larger than that for A5S992A5/PAO (μ of 0.002-0.039). Detailed anal. of the dynamic thickness and contact geometry enabled us to investigate the difference in the friction reduction abilities of the two additives. A5L946A5 has a high affinity to PAO and the mols. have expanded conformation in PAO; extensive chain entanglement effect results in the formation of a thick and viscous lubricant layer, which gives rise to high friction. On the other hand, A5S992A5 has low affinity to PAO, and the shrunken A5S992A5 mols. adsorbed on the surfaces form a rigid slip plane at the interface, which gives rise to low friction. Our results provide insights into the oil/additive combinations used for low friction in oil-based lubrication.

Baijiu (Chinese liquor) is a type of traditional distilled spirit drink produced by spontaneous fermentation Lactic acid bacteria as the predominant bacteria during the fermentation of Baijiu may influence the flavor through the production of enzymes and metabolites. Results showed that there was significant difference in lactic acid bacteria counts between different fermentation periods. Indigenous lactic acid bacteria with high alc. tolerance and esterase activity were selected for fortified fermentation Inoculation with indigenous lactic acid bacteria significantly changed the flavor profile of Baijiu. All the selected strains promoted the formation of Et acetate which is an important flavor in Baijiu. Lactobacillus acetotolerans significantly promoted the formation of Et acetate, Et lactate, ethanol, acetic acid, and 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol. Sensory anal. revealed higher harmony in the samples fermented with L. hilgardii and L. acetotolerans, and higher intensive ester aroma in the samples fermented with L. planturum. The generation of flavors such as esters, alcs. and acids were species or even strain dependent. The results of this work will broaden our knowledge regarding the role of indigenous lactic acid bacteria during Baijiu manufacturing, and provide a potential approach for improving the flavor of Baijiu.

To study mol. exchange between colloids requires the preparation of suitably labeled species. Deuterium isotopic labeling has been used to prepare two chem. identical yet isotopically distinguishable poly(lauryl methacrylate)-poly(Me methacrylate) (PLMA-PMMA) diblock copolymer colloids by polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) directly in an alkane solvent. Mol. exchange should be detectable by performing small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements on the dispersions. SANS measurements were performed on fully hydrogenous PLMA39-PMMA57 and deuterated core PLMA39-P(MMA-d8)57 colloids. They were mixed in equal amounts and heated to determine if mol. exchange occurred. PISA syntheses are often thermally initiated, and diblock copolymers self-assemble at elevated temperature, making this an important parameter to study. Exptl. data for the mixture were compared to predicted curves for exchanged and non-exchanged colloids. The scattering of a mixture of fully hydrogenous and deuterated core copolymers does not disappear upon mol. exchange, due to the remaining contrast between the stabilizer and the core and solvent even after the cores fully exchange. By simultaneously fitting the SANS data from dispersions before mixing and using these parameters to constrain fitting the SANS data of mixtures, the mol. exchange between diblock copolymer micelles upon heating is clearly observed

Xinjiang is the main production area of figs in China. In this work, three different methods (SDE, SAFE, and SPME) were employed to extract the volatile compounds from Xinjiang dried figs. The exactions were then analyzed using aroma extract dilution anal. (AEDA) based on gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatog.-olfactometry (GC-O). Seventy-five aroma-active compounds were identified with flavor dilutions (FD) factors ranging from 1 to 2187. Aroma compounds with odor activity value (OAV) greater than 10 were subsequently used in aroma reconstitution and omission experiments Based on instrumental anal. and sensory evaluation, 22 compounds were identified as the key aroma compounds and eight of these were evaluated as the most important aroma contributors of Xinjiang dried figs, including heptanal, nonanal, linalool, benzyl benzoate, styrene, eugenol, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, and vanillin. Moreover, three volatile components, including 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol and ortho-guaiacol, were identified as key aroma compounds of dried figs and have not been reported previously.

Glycoprotein detection holds great potential for early diagnosis of diverse diseases. For this purpose, the combination of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor and mol. imprinting has attracted increasing attention. Nonetheless, the recently common imprinted films fabricated on QCM electrode are thick and rigid, lacking flexibility in aqueous phase. Alternatively, small mols. immobilized on the electrode to construct mol. scale film could address this problem, while stabilization of the imprinted sites remains challenging. Herein, a co-assembly complex was obtained by the mixture of template and multifunctional oligomer, which was then immobilized on the amino-modified transducer surface through epoxy-amino reaction to form a protein-imprinted film. Afterward, the remaining epoxy groups in oligomer chains were cross-linked to conserve and stabilize the orientation of imprinted sites after template elution. Template rebinding tests show that cross-linked film has much higher imprinting factors than that of the non-cross-linked counterpart. Furthermore, control proteins that are distinct in properties and structures were employed to demonstrate the selectivity of this approach, and the imprinted assay reveals high affinity and specificity towards template protein. The work investigated the effects of liquefaction temperatures (T), solid-liquid rates (R1) and solvent filling rates (R2) on the yield, composition and property of bio-oil. The yield of bio-oil enhanced initially and then declined slightly with the enhancement of T and R2, nevertheless, the yield of bio-oil decreased constantly with the increase of R1, and the topmost yield of bio-oil in this experiment was 35.56% when the solid-liquid rate was 5%. The work studied the properties of bio-oil generated by pig manure under different liquefaction temperatures The results of gas chromatog.-mass spectroscopy anal. revealed that the dominating composition of bio-oil from pig manure were esters, long-chain hydrocarbons, ketones, ethanol, organic acids and nitrogen compounds The heating value of bio-oil (34.39 ∼ 37.03 MJ/kg) obtained by thermochem. liquefaction of pig manure was close to the heating value of gasoline (46 MJ/kg). Microscopic droplets integrating multiple functionalities are essential in the microcompartmentalized related reaction and applications. Solvent exchange is a simple approach for producing femtoliter surface droplets by the transit oversaturation created at the mixing front of a solution by a poor solvent. But it remains challenging to control the compositions in nanodroplets. Our hypothesis is the new liquid component can be added to the pre-formed surface droplets at certain ratios controlled by solvent exchange. In this work we investigate the growth of the droplets during addition of a new component by solvent exchange. Two-component droplets were formed on a microdomain patterned substrate as highly ordered arrays. The phys. and chem. parameters that control droplet composition and a possible application of the binary droplet arrays were presented in this work. The added amount of the second component in the binary droplet can be quant. controlled by the solution and flow conditions. The theor. prediction of the component ratio based on the droplet diffusive growth dynamics mode shows a good agreement with the exptl. results. The results show that the solvent exchange on the surface with pre-formed droplets provides a highly efficient method to tune the droplet compositions to desired ratio. The unique feature of this approach enables a gradient structure of droplet composition over the surface, demonstrated by an application of different microlens performance on a surface.

Creating load-bearing hydrogels with superior mech. strength and toughness is of vital importance for promoting the development of polymer hydrogels toward practical applications. Herein, a type of composite hydrogel is facilely fabricated employing simple and effective UV irradiation one-pot method by introducing cheap and available nanosilica sol into hydrophobic association poly(acrylamide-lauryl methacrylate) (HAPAM gels). Composite hydrogels exhibit enhanced mech. strength (compression stress reaching 4.4 MPa) and toughness (compression hysteresis energy achieved is 151.15 kJ m-3) compared to HAPAM gels. Composite hydrogels also demonstrate rapid self-recovery behavior (95.91% stress recovery and 92.19% hysteresis energy recovery after restoration for 15 min, resp.) and favorable fatigue-resistant ability without the help of external stimuli at room temperature based on the cyclic loading-unloading compression measurements. The simple and effective design strategy may help the development of hydrogel materials toward practical applications for soft sensors, tissue engineering, and actuators.

HDHE also induced the expression of LC-3, a marker of autophagic cell death at a cytotoxic concentration Moreover, HDHE modulated the expression of ER stress genes. The hexadecanoic acid-enriched extract of Halymenia durvillei promotes apoptosis and autophagy of human triple-neg. breast cancer cells. Lignin has been extensively explored as a renewable precursor for materials fabrication. However, its low reactivity is one of the main challenges for material development. Herein, we presented a simple and effective biorefinery strategy to directly prepare reactive lignin with lower mol. weight and enhanced reactivity for the fabrication of high-strength self-healing adhesives. The role of 2-naphthol to suppress lignin condensation during the organosolv pretreatment of two woody biomasses was demonstrated by the less condensed structures and decreased mol. weights of lignin. This promoted the enzymic hydrolysis of pretreated poplar from 50.2% to 62.9% at the low enzyme loading. Furthermore, the resultant lignins showed 51.7% increase in the modification efficiency during an esterification reaction. Lignin based macro-initiator was used to initiate “”grafting from”” reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of furan methacrylate and lauryl methacrylate to generate copolymers with tunable properties. Then, the occurrence of reversible Diels-Alder reaction between furan rings and maleimide crosslinker enabled the formation of dynamic network as self-healing adhesive. The adhesiveness anal. revealed that the highest adhesive shear strength reached 6.3 MPa, which was significantly higher than most of previous adhesives used on wood chips. Furthermore, after 10 times self-healing, the shear strength still accomplished 39.6% of original strength. This study has presented an upgraded biorefinery strategy to tune the properties of lignin and its interesting utilization to fabricate functional materials, providing new insights into materials and biorefinery society.
