(SEC) and proton NMR (1H-NMR) spectroscopy indicated the success of the polymerization The self-assembly behavior in aqueous media was investigated by light scattering techniques and fluorescence spectroscopy. The hyperbranched copolymers form multimol. aggregates of nanoscale dimensions with a low critical aggregation concentration In addition, the model hydrophobic drug, curcumin (CUR), known also for its intrinsic fluorescence properties, was used in order to investigate the H-[P(OEGMA-co-LMA)] copolymers drug encapsulation ability. Curcumin is successfully loaded into the polymeric nanoparticles, as confirmed by dynamic light scattering and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Interestingly, curcumin hydrophobic interactions with the hyperbranched copolymers result in more well-defined co-assembled nanostructures, in terms of size and size distribution. The mixed copolymer-CUR nano-assemblies consist of small size nanoparticles (<100 nm) which exhibit relatively high size uniformity, colloidal stability and fluorescent properties. Overall, results signify that the biocompatible H-[P(OEGMA-co-LMA)] nanostructures could potentially serve as nanocarrier systems for drug delivery and bio-imaging applications. Super-hydrophobic porous absorbents are convenient, low-cost, efficient and environment-friendly materials in the treatment of oil spills. In this work, a simple Pickering emulsion template method was employed to fabricate an interconnected porous poly(DVB-LMA) sponge. A new co-Pickering stabilization system of Span 80 and NiFe2O4 nanoparticles was used to prepare ultra-concentrated internal phase water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. After further polymerization, the resulting sponges were generated, which exhibited excellent adsorption selectivity due to the super-hydrophobicity and super-lipophilicity. Furthermore, the characterization results indicated that the composites had superior thermal stability, low d., high porosity and a flexible three-dimensional porous structure. Besides, the addition of nickel ferrite nanoparticles provided the materials with extra magnetic operability. High oil adsorption capacity (up to 36.9-84.2 g g-1), high oil retention, fast adsorption rate and superior reusability allowed the materials to be applied in the treatment of oily water.

Filtration control of drilling fluid plays an important role in the process of wellbore construction and ensures the success of drilling operation. A swellable polymer microsphere (SPM) of methylmethacrylate (MMA), Bu acrylate (BA), and lauryl methacrylate (LMA) was synthesized with suspension polymerization Its swelling property was characterized by oil adsorption capacity measurement. First, the effect of SPM on the filtration and rheol. properties of virgin organic clay dispersion was investigated. Then the filtration and rheol. properties of mineral oil-based drilling fluid in the presence of SPM were elucidated under the resp. conditions of hot aging temperature, oil to water ratio and d. Furthermore, the filtration control properties between SPM and two traditional filtration loss additives including modified lignite and asphaltic additive was compared. Addition of SPM exhibited obvious influence on the viscosity of oil-based drilling fluid especially at high concentration of 3 w/v%, therefore, a concentration of lower than 1.5 w/v% was recommended. After hot aging at 200°C, the oil-based drilling fluid containing 1 w/v% SPM exhibited an API filtration loss decrease of 85%, and HTHP filtration loss decrease of 79% in comparison with the base fluid. After hot rolling at 180°C, the API filtration loss decreased by 2%, 24% and 53%, and the HTHP filtration loss decreased by 42%, 54% and 65% resp. when 1 w/v% asphaltic additive, modified lignite and SPM are in the presence of the base fluid. Besides decreasing the filtration loss volume under high temperatures, incorporation of SPM also improves the filter cake quality of oil-based drilling fluid. SPM is capable of adsorbing considerable base oil and become swellable. The swellable polymer microspheres with favorably deformable and compressible properties can effectively fill the voids of filter cake and reduce the permeability, which leads to low filtration loss and minimization of solids invasion.

The morphol. and porosity of the obtained particles can be readily tuned by cosolvent-acetonitrile binary solvents. Addition of a small amount of cosolvent that has similar solubility parameter to that of the functional monomer can significantly improve the monodispersity of the obtained microspheres. When THF was used as the co-solvent, the surface area of the highly porous microspheres achieved higher than 400 m2·g1. Solvothermal precipitation co-polymerization can be expected in scale-up fabrication of various monodisperse functional microspheres free of any surfactant and additive.

The article focuses on the study of oil spill cleanup in an aquatic media by comparing the oil sorption capacities of three polymeric sorbents. As a large-area solar radiation collector, luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) can be used as power generation units in semitransparent solar windows, modernized agricultural greenhouses and building facades. However, the external optical efficiency and long-term stability of the LSCs limit their practical applications due to the sensitivity of the emitters to the light and environmental conditions. Here, we used the concept of “”laminated glass”” to prepare LSCs, which consist of two waveguide layers and the quantum dots (QDs)/polymer interlayer, and we tune the refractive index of the different parts of the system to improve the external optical efficiency and stability of the LSCs, simultaneously. The waveguide layer can be glass, quartz, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and other transparent materials. The CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs were used as fluorophores to prepare the interlayer of the LSCs. The external optical efficiency of the laminated LSCs is associated with the refractive index of the three layers: the closer the refractive index, the higher the ηopt. The highest external optical efficiency of 3.4% has been achieved for the laminated PMMA/QDs-polymer/PMMA LSCs, which improved ~92% compared to the single-layered CdSe/CdS based LSCs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest efficiency for the LSCs based on CdSe/CdS QDs. These results pave the way to realize high efficiency laminated windows as power generation units by suitably tuning the structure of the LSC, and provide the theor. guidance for the LSCs utilized in building integrated photovoltaics.

Poly(dodecyl methacrylate-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) gels were prepared with and without a pore former (PEG) in ethanol at 70°C by free radical crosslinking polymerization method. These gels were used to sep. limonene + linalool mixtures with different fractions. The selectivity values were higher than 1 for each gel synthesized with PEG and without PEG. In equilibrium, selectivity values of gels synthesized without PEG in 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30 limonene + linalool binary mixtures were calculated as 1.1, 1.9, and 2.1, resp. The corresponding gels synthesized using PEG have selectivity values as 1.3, 1.9, and 2.2. Despite slightly effect of pore former on selectivity, it has a relatively significant effect in time regions before arriving equilibrium, giving the idea of selecting optimum time region to sep. binary mixtures Solubility parameter of the gel was predicted by group contribution methods to determine the relationship between selectivity and solubility parameter difference of binary combinations of limonene, linalool and gel. Solubility parameter difference calculated from Hoy method showed that the value of each solubility parameter contribution for gel-linalool binary was the lowest with the values of 0.02, 1.7, and 4.8 for disperse, polar and H-bonding contributions, resp. verifying the selectivity of the gels for linalool. The gel synthesized using PEG shows a swelling value change for temperatures higher than 40°C in the direction of decreasing but the gel synthesized without PEG has approx. constant equilibrium swelling value (ESV). This result indicates that the use of a pore former may be an important parameter in the recovery process of the extracted components after the separation procedure.
