Four different series of polyacrylamides containing different amounts of azobenzene moieties have been synthesized via a polymer analogous reaction of poly(pentafluorophenylacrylate) (PPFPA). All copolymers were designed to exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in aqueous solution, which was dependent on (i) the amount of incorporated chromophoric azobenzene groups and (ii) the isomerization state of the resp. azobenzene group. Higher LCST values were measured for UV-irradiated solutions of the copolymers in comparison to the non-irradiated copolymer solutions A maximum difference in the LCST of up to 7 °C was found for the copolymer poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) containing 8.5 mol% of azobenzene groups. Within this temperature range, a reversible solubility change of the copolymer could be induced by irradiation with light.

A series of highly fluorinated acrylic macromers and monomers containing perfluoroalkyl, perfluorophenyl, and perfluorocyclohexyl pendant groups were synthesized in an attempt at reducing absorption losses and birefringences. The macromers, prepared by the anionic polymerization of fluorinated acrylic monomers, were viscous liquids with number average mol. weights of 15,000-16,000 g mol-1. Macromer and monomer mixtures that generally exhibited viscosities suitable for the UV-imprint process were photopolymerized to prepare the polymeric films. At 850 nm, the films had very low birefringences (approx. 0.0001) and their refractive indexes (RIs) were linearly dependent on the mixture compositions; this allowed the RIs of films to be fine-tuned within at certain range. At 850 nm, the propagation losses of the multimode waveguides ranged from 0.12 dB cm-1 to 0.15 dB cm-1, demonstrating that these polymers are potentially useful as optically passive waveguide materials.

Iron-mediated generation of highly toxic Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) plays a major role in the process leading to iron overload-related diseases. The long-term s.c. administration of Deferoxamine (DFO) is currently clin.-approved to improve patient symptoms and survival. However, non-specific toxicity and short circulation times of the drug in humans often leads to poor patient compliance. Herein, thioketal-based ROS-responsive polymeric nanogels containing DFO moieties (rNG-DFO) were designed to chelate iron and to degrade under oxidative stimuli into fragments <10 nm to enhance excretion of iron-bound chelates. Serum ferritin levels and iron concentrations in major organs of IO mice decreased following treatment with rNG-DFO, and fecal elimination of iron-bound chelates increased compared to free DFO. Furthermore, rNG-DFO decreased iron mediated oxidative stress levels in vitro and reduced iron-mediated inflammation in the liver of IO mice. The study confirms that ROS-responsive nanogels may serve as a promising alternative to DFO for safer and more efficient iron chelation therapy. The synthesis and self-assembly of novel semiconducting rod-coil type graft block copolymers based on poly(para-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) copolymers is presented, focusing on the ordering effect of linear vs. hyperbranched side chains. Using an addnl. reactive ester block, highly polar, linear poly(ethylene glycol), and hyperbranched polyglycerol side chains are attached in a grafting-to approach. Remarkably, the resulting novel semiconducting graft copolymers with polyether side chains show different solubility and side-chain directed self-assembly behavior in various solvents, e.g., cylindrical or spherical superstructures in the size range of 10 to 120 nm, as shown by TEM. By adjusting the mol. weight and the topol. of the polyether segments, self-assembly into defined superstructures can be achieved, which is important for the efficient charge transport in potential electronic applications.

Pressure sensitive paints (PSP) containing oxygen probes were primarily used to measure air pressure. In this perspective, a polymerizable methacrylate-derived tetraphenylporphinato platinum(II) (PtTPP-MA) monomer was copolymerized with acrylic/vinyl monomers to produce four different copolymers. Octafluoropentyl methacrylate (OCFPM) and pentafluorophenyl acrylate (PFPA) were used as fluorinated monomers. Me methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (S) were used as non-fluorinated monomers. The structures and phys. properties of the polymers were confirmed by 1H NMR, 19F NMR, GPC, and DSC. Exptl. conditions were optimized to get fine nanofibers. Pressure sensing electrospun membranes and spin coated films were fabricated. Nanofibers showed fast response and good sensitivity towards gaseous oxygen. The influence of types of substrate and polymer natures on response time, oxygen sensitivity, and pressure responses were deliberated. Among our synthesized copolymers, poly(PS-co-PFPA-co-OCFPM-co-PtTPPMA) (Polymer P3) showed fast response time and good pressure sensitivity both as spin coated films and nanofibers.

There is a need for improved nanomaterials to simultaneously target cancer cells and avoid non-specific clearance by phagocytes. An ellipsoidal polymersome system is developed with a unique tunable size and shape property. These particles are functionalized with inhouse phage-display cell-targeting peptide to target a medulloblastoma cell line in vitro. Particle association with medulloblastoma cells is modulated by tuning the peptide ligand d. on the particles. These polymersomes has low levels of association with primary human blood phagocytes. The stealth properties of the polymersomes are further improved by including the peptide targeting moiety, an effect that is likely driven by the peptide protecting the particles from binding blood plasma proteins. Overall, this ellipsoidal polymersome system provides a promising platform to explore tumor cell targeting in vivo.
