B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is a disease caused primarily by defects in the apoptosis mechanism. AN-9, a butyric acid (BA) derivative, is a potent differentiating and an anti-cancer drug that induces apoptosis in HL-60 cells. Herein the authors show the effect of AN-9, alone and in combination with doxorubicin, on cell cultures from B-CLL patients. Cells from 17 patients were cultured and tested for viability, apoptosis, bcl-2, and Bax protein expression. Exposure of B-CLL cell cultures to AN-9 was accompanied by apoptosis and a marked viability loss (up to 46%, p=0.0017). AN-9 reduced up to 51% (p=0.0017) the levels of bcl-2 in 57% of the cultures that express bcl-2. The combination of low concentrations of AN-9 and doxorubicin more than additively enhanced apoptosis and reduced bcl-2 levels in B-CLL cultures which were resistant to AN-9. AN-9 enhanced Bax expression up to 58% (p=0.008) in cultures from 53% of the patients but had no effect on Bax levels when combined with doxorubicin. In conclusion, AN-9 alone reduced bcl-2 and enhanced Bax expression in cultures from B-CLL patients, and the reduction of bcl-2 levels in combination with doxorubicin was greater than additive. These results may be beneficial in possible future combination therapy with AN-9 in B-CLL.

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is native to the Americas and has recently invaded Okinawa, Japan via Africa, South Asia and China. Gas chromatog./mass spectrometry analyses of hexane extracts of 100 abdominal glands of Okinawan females revealed six candidate compounds for sex pheromone, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac, ca. 6 ng/female), (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:Ac), (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate, and (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol at the ratio of 100:10:1.3:0.90:0.13:1.8, resp. In Okinawa, only small numbers of males were captured with the original blend of these compounds However, much more males were attracted to a 100:3 blend of Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac that had been suggested by others to be the most effective blend in a Florida population. In another test in Okinawa, even more males were captured with a 100:1 blend of these compounds than with a 100:3 blend. Significant numbers of males of other moths, Mythimna loreyi (Duponchel) and Chrysodeixis eriosoma (Doubleday), were also attracted to blends of Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac when the ratio of the latter to the former compound was increased from 100:1 to 100:10. Based on these results we concluded that the most powerful as well as convenient sex pheromone formulation to monitor S. frugiperda populations in Okinawa was a 100:1 blend of Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac.

The ratios of Z9-14:Ac to Z11-14:Ac in individuals varied from 3.5:1 to 11:1 with an average of 6.2; their total added up to 462 ng/female with an average of 182 ng for 2- to 7-day-old individuals. No qual. or quant. differences were observed between laboratory and field insects. Z9-14:Ac, Z11-14:Ac and the corresponding alcs. were also found in female effluvia. Addition of either of the 2 alcs. to a blend of the 2 acetates augmented trap catch in the field. The same was true for (Z)-9,(E)-12-tetradecadienyl acetate which was not detected in gland extracts

Attraction of E. ambiguella males to Z-9-dodecenyl acetate (Z9-12:Ac) [16974-11-1], alone and in combination with dodecyl acetate (12:Ac) [112-66-3] or Z-10-tridecenyl acetate (Z10-13:Ac) [64437-24-7] was tested in both wind-tunnel and field experiments In the laboratory, response to Z9-12:Ac reached a distinct dosage optimum at which attraction was nearly as good as to live females. Addition of 12:Ac, a minor component of female glands and effluvia, had no effect at low doses of Z9-12:Ac and only marginally improved attraction at the optimum. However, inclusion of 12:Ac with an overdose of Z9-12:Ac, fully restored activity. In the field, Z9-12:Ac alone was not very attractive at any dose; catches markedly increased by adding 12:Ac and climbed with increasing dose of each compound ≤10 mg. Optimum ratio of Z9-12:Ac to 12:Ac was 1:1-1:5. Z10-13:Ac, had the same effect as 12:Ac in the laboratory and the field, but was effective at a lower dose. In the field, inclusion of the synergist permits use of high cap loads to attract more males, perhaps from greater distances.

The physiol., morphol. and distribution of pheromone receptors on the antennae of both sexes of Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were investigated by electroantennogram screening, single sensillum recordings and SEM. The electroantennogram recordings showed maximal responses to (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate in males and to (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate in females. In subsequent single sensillum recordings, receptor cells specific for the two known pheromone components, (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate and (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate, as well as for the behavioral antagonist (Z)-9-tetradecenol, were found in both sexes. The sensitivity of the pheromone receptors to their resp. stimuli was the same in the sexes, while the number of pheromone-specific sensilla was much lower in the female. In the male, two physiol. distinct sensillum types were differently distributed over the antennal surface. The most numerous type, containing only one receptor neuron specific for (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate, was evenly distributed over the ventral antennal surface, while a sensillum type containing one neuron responding to (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate and one neuron specific for (Z)-9-tetradecenol was only found among more laterally situated sensilla. This distribution was not observed in the female.

Five pairs of selected mass spectra fragments are chosen to distinguish positional isomers. A new math. model is introduced which permits simultaneous comparisons of all 5 ratios of unknowns and references The method can be used for analyses of very small amounts (≤5 ng) of unknown acetates in insect samples.
