Elucidation of the chem. components of airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) facilitates the characterization of atm. contamination sources and associated human exposure risks. In the present study, we employed a high-throughput anal. approach to investigate the abundance and distribution of 163 plastic additives in ambient PM2.5 collected from 94 different sites across the Pearl River Delta region, China. These chems. are from six categories, including organophosphate esters (OPEs), phthalate esters (PAEs), PAE replacements, bisphenol analogs, UV stabilizers, and antioxidants. Ninety-three of them exhibited a detection frequency greater than 50% in PM2.5, while the combined concentrations of target plastic additives ranged from 610 to 49,400μg/g (median: 3500μg/g) across sites. By category, concentrations of PAEs (median: 2710μg/g) were one to three orders of magnitude greater than those of other groups, followed by PAE replacements (540μg/g) and OPEs (76.2μg/g). Chem.-dependent exposure risks to PM2.5-bound plastic additives were characterized via the estimated daily intake and hazard quotient (HQ) approaches, which resulted in two different risk prioritization systems. Although the HQ approach suggested no or very low health concerns when considering individual chems., the complexity of co-concurrent chems. in PM2.5 raises the concern on potential health risks from exposure to airborne particles and a cocktail of chem. components.

Isabel Cadena-Aizaga, M. published the artcileOccurrence and bioconcentration of organic UV filters in primary marine consumers, SDS of cas: 71617-10-2, the main research area is organic UV filter bioconcentration marine environmental pollution.

Organic UV filters are added in different products to absorb UV radiation, whose use has been voiced due to increasing concerning about skin damage. Given their extensive production, these compounds are continuously released to the aquatic environment, which makes them an important family of emerging pollutants. Their presence in the marine environment poses a hazard to the living organisms exposed to them. Primary marine consumers can be recognized as sentinels of pollution in marine environments. In this study, the occurrence of eight widely used organic UV filters was analyzed in five different primary marine consumers from three beaches on the Gran Canaria Island (Spain) collected for 4 mo. For that, a new method, based on microwave-assisted extraction and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatog. coupled to mass spectrometry in tandem, was optimized and validate. The developed method presented detection limits between 0.7 ng·g-1 dry weight (dw) and 7.1 ng·g-1 dw and intraday and interday precision with ranges from 0.2% to 9.9% and from 1.9% to 12.4%, resp. The method was applied to 20 samples comprising five different types of organisms. All the analyzed samples revealed the presence of organic UV filters, in all samples at least one analyte was determined The highest detection frequency corresponded to Bu methoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDBM) (55%), while octocrylene (OC) was found at the highest concentration (1,735 ng·g-1 dw) in the sea hare Aplysia dactylomela. At the same time, a preliminary bioconcentration and biomagnification assessment was made for the UV filters found in the studied marine organisms. Bioconcentration factors (Log values) over 3.7 were obtained in some cases, which suggests possible bioaccumulation. 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC) and drometrizole trisiloxane (DTS) obtained a biomagnification factor over 1, which implies potential biomagnification for these compounds

The aim of this work was to evaluate how the use of mixed cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lachancea thermotolerans indigenous yeast strains influences the volatile composition of wine. Multivariate curve resolution (MCR) method has been applied to data anal. Five fermentation trials were carried out: three co-inoculated with L. thermotolerans:S. cerevisiae, at the ratio of 50:1, 20:1 and 5:1 resp., and two with a pure culture of each strain. A must from sun-dried Pedro Ximeńez grapes was employed. Volatile composition was determined by dual sequential stir bar sorptive extraction, followed by GC-MS anal. MCR provided 171 peaks. Results in co-inoculation fermentations revealed that the majority compounds obtained in each case followed the same trend as that observed for the pure culture of the strain that was present in a higher proportion. Finally, 50:1 and 20:1 seemed to be the best proportions to obtain a wine with a quality volatile profile.

Camara, Jose S. published the artcileExploring the potential of wine industry by-products as source of additives to improve the quality of aquafeed, Name: Hexyl 2-hydroxybenzoate, the main research area is wine aquafeed quality additive byproduct.

The recent growing concern driven by consumer interest in the safety and quality of seafood, has boosted the search for healthy and functional aquafeeds. The current study represents the first approach to assess the potential of volatile composition of the wine industry by products (e.g., grape pomace, grape stems, lees), as additives for improving the quality of fish feeds in terms of organoleptic characteristics (e.g., aroma and flavor) and health benefits. Headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) was used to establish the volatile profile of wine industry byproducts. A total of 153 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which belong to different chem. families, comprising 36 esters, 31 carbonyl compound, 20 alcs., 18 terpenoids, 17 acids, 11 furanic compounds, four volatile phenols, two lactones, and 14 miscellaneous, were identified. Esters and terpenoids showed a pos. contribution to the aquafeeds aroma with fruity, sweet, green, fresh, and berry notes, whereas some acids (e.g., hexanoic acid) and terpenoids (e.g., limonene) could be used as antimicrobial, antioxidant and antiproliferative agents. Our findings confirmed the potential of wine industry byproducts as a rich source of essential compounds to enhance the quality of aquafeeds towards the valorization of winery waste based on the concept of circular economy. Further investigation on the extraction, isolation and purification of VOCs from a natural bio-source will guarantee the safety of the aquafeed and compliance with the requirements of the animal feed industry.

In this work, a low toxicity deep eutectic solvent-based ferrofluid is presented for the first time as magnetic fluid to be used as an efficient solvent in liquid-based microextraction techniques. This ferrofluid is made of a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent, composed by menthol and thymol in a 1:5 molar ratio as carrier solvent, and oleic acid-coated cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4@oleic acid) magnetic nanoparticles. This material was characterized via magnetism measurement, SEM, IR spectroscopy and d. measurement. The determination of UV filters in environmental water samples was selected as model anal. application to test the extraction performance of this new ferrofluid by employing stir bar dispersive liquid microextraction, prior to liquid chromatog.-tandem mass spectrometry anal. The response surface methodol. was used as a multivariate optimization method for extraction step. Under the optimized conditions, good anal. features were obtained, such as low limits of detection between 7 and 83 ng L-1, good repeatability (relative standard deviations, RSD (%) below 15%), enrichment factors between 46 and 101 and relative recoveries between 80 and 117%, proving the good extraction capability of this ferrofluid. Finally, the method was successfully applied to three environmental waters (beach and river waters), finding trace amounts of the target UV filters. The presented low toxicity deep eutectic solvent-based ferrofluid results to be a good alternative to conventional solvents used in liquid-phase microextraction techniques.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of defoliation performed in the Babica red grape variety on the volatile compounds in produced wine. Three treatments were performed during 2017 and 2018: the removal of six leaves before flowering (FL) and at the end of veraison (VER), as well as control (C). Volatile compounds were analyzed using a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrophotometric detector. Statistically evaluated by anal. of variance (ANOVA at the p = 0.05 level) and principal component anal. (PCA). Defoliation treatments were affected by the concentration of several compounds, but only in one year. The VER2017 treatment significantly increased the concentration of three aliphatic esters up to 8 C atoms and octanoic acid Et ester. The FL2017 treatment increased the concentration of three aliphatic alcs. The FL2018 treatment has significantly enhanced the concentration Et cinnamate but decreased the concentrations of eugenol and dihydro-2-methyl-3(2H)-thiophenone. Both defoliation treatments reduced the concentration of γ-decanolactone in 2017. Aldehydes, monoterpenoles, and monoterpenes remained unaffected by the defoliation treatments. Vintage was found to be the largest source of variability for most volatile compounds under investigation, which was confirmed by PCA. The effect of defoliation in the mild-Mediterranean climate was found to mostly depend on seasonal weather conditions.

Cadena-Aizaga, M. Isabel published the artcileOccurrence and environmental hazard of organic UV filters in seawater and wastewater from Gran Canaria Island (Canary Islands, Spain), Application of Isopentyl 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)acrylate, the main research area is environmental hazard organic UV filters seawater wastewater; Environmental hazard assessment; Organic ultraviolet filters; Seawater; Solid phase extraction; Wastewater.

Organic UV filters are used in personal care products, but they are also added to industrial products and are constantly released to the environment. This study analyses the occurrence of 8 widely used organic UV filters in seawater from three beaches on the Gran Canaria Island (Spain) and in three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) by taking samples from influents and effluents. It also discusses the target compounds’ post-treatment removal efficiencies. Sampling was carried out for 6 mo and analytes were extracted by solid phase extraction with Sep-pak C18 cartridges. They were determined by ultra-high performance liquid chromatog. coupled to mass spectrometry in tandem. The potential environmental hazard associated with the found concentrations was also assessed for marine organisms. Different target compounds were detected on the analyzed beaches and in the wastewater. Benzophenone-3 (BP3) was the most recurrent compound in the seawater samples (frequency detection of 83%) and also in wastewater influents and effluents (measured in all the samples). However, the highest concentrations for seawater (172μg L-1) and influent wastewater (208μg L-1) corresponded to octocrylene, while methylene bis-benzotriazolyltetramethylbutylphenol was the compound most concentrated in secondary treatment effluent (34.0μg L-1) and BP3 in tertiary treatment effluent (8.07μg L-1). All the analyzed samples showed that at least one target UV filter was present. Regarding the removal efficiencies of these compounds in the studied WWTPs, consistent differences between the target compounds were observed in influent concentration terms, where the average removal rates were higher than 50% for most of the compounds Conventional treatment is unable to completely remove many studied compounds, while tertiary treatment acts as an addnl. elimination for some of them. An environmental hazard quotient above 1 was found for octocrylene, benzophenone-3 and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, which indicates a potential high hazard for living species if these compounds are present.

He, Yanping published the artcileSynthesis of melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules containing oil-based fragrances via intermediate polyacrylate bridging layers, Application of Hexyl 2-hydroxybenzoate, the main research area is melamine formaldehyde microcapsule clove oil fragrance polyacrylate bridging layer.

A general and versatile strategy to prepare melamine-formaldehyde (MF) microcapsules encapsulating oil-based fragrances by combining solvent evaporation and in situ polymerization was proposed in this work. The oil-based fragrance was pre-encapsulated by an inner polyacrylate membrane via solvent evaporation, followed by in situ polymerization of MF precondensates as an outer shell. The polyacrylate membrane is used as an intermediate bridging layer to stabilize the oil-based fragrance, and to provide driving forces for in situ polymerization of MF precondensates through electrostatic attractions between carboxyl groups and ammonium ions. It was demonstrated that MF microcapsules containing clove oil were prepared successfully. The amount and the composition of the intermediate polyacrylate bridging layer were critical Smooth and sphere-shaped MF-clove oil microcapsules were prepared when the weight ratio of polyacrylate to clove oil was over 60 wt% and the concentration of acrylic acid (AA) increased to 10 wt% in polyacrylate. In addition, MF microcapsules containing sunflower oil and hexyl salicylate were prepared by using this method. The work suggests that this new approach can be potentially used to encapsulate various core materials, tuning the shell properties of microcapsules such as thickness, mech. strength and release properties.
