Twelve modified dithiocarbamates and a thiuram disulfide used for the initiation of Me methacrylate (MMA) polymerization were synthesized in this study. The polymerization of MMA was followed by determine the yield and molar mass of the obtained PMMA as a function of polymerization time. Four of the synthesized dithiocarbamates: S-benzyl-N,N-dibenzyldithiocarbamate, S-allyl-N,N-dibenzyldithiocarbamate, S-benzyl-N,N-diisobutyldithiocarbamate and S-benzoyl-N,N-diisobutyldithiocarbamate, as well as N,N,N’,N’-tetrabenzylthiuramdisulfide acted as iniferters. They were active as the initiators of the photo and/or thermally initiated radical polymerization of MMA in bulk and inert solvents (benzene and toluene). S-Benzyl-N,N-dibenzyldithiocarbamate can be successfully used for the initiation of MMA polymerization in a polar solvent such as dimethylacetamide.

This study was conducted to determine the concentrations of mineral substances, such as: calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn); in the blood serum of broiler chicks after supplementation of humic substances. Group 1 (G1) was supplemented with 0.7% Humac Natur Mycosorb (HNMy); G2 with 0.7% Humac Natur Monogastric (HNM); G3 with 0.3% HNMy; and the control group (GC) received a basal diet without any supplements. In the G2 group, the serum Ca level increased slightly compared to the other exptl. groups. A statistically significant decrease (P < 0.001) in the blood serum of Mg was detected in the broilers from group G2 (0.60 mmol.l-1) and G1 (P < 0.05; 0.68 mmol.l-1) in comparison to the GC. The Zn in the blood serum of broilers from group G2 (22.05μmol.l-1) was significantly increased (P < 0.05) in broilers from group G2 in comparison to the control group (19.47μmol.l-1) and G1 group (19.61μmol.l-1). The serum Cu (12.72μmol.l-1) was significantly increased (P < 0.001) in broilers from group G2 in comparison to the GC (10.28μmol.l-1). In the group G1 there was a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in the level of the Cu in the blood serum (8.69μmol.l-1) in comparison to the serum Cu in broilers from groups G3 (10.45μmol.l-1) and G2 (12.72μmol.l-1). The addition of Humac Natur Mycosorb (0.3% and 0.7%) in the feed caused a strong correlation in the blood serum between the Ca and Mg (r = 0.7494; r = 0.7648). The addition of 0.3% Humac Natur Mycosorb in the feed caused a high neg. correlation (r = -0.7078) in the blood serum between the Mg and Zn.

The synthesis and characterization of diblock and triblock copolymers produced by a two-component iniferter system is reported. These materials, designed for possible water treatment applications, consist of a hydrophilic poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) block and a very low surface energy poly(1,1′-dihydroperfluorooctyl methacrylate) (PFOMA) or poly(1,1,2,2-tetrahydroperfluorooctyl acrylate) (PTAN) block. Angle-dependent X-ray spectroscopy results and water contact angle measurements indicate that the surfaces of PDMAEMA-b-PFOMA diblock copolymers consist primarily of PFOMA. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the block copolymers are microphase-separated, exhibiting either cylindrical or layered morphologies that do not change appreciably upon exposure to water. Both water uptake and water flux increase with increasing PDMAEMA content.

The structure of the sex pheromone of the most important sugarcane pest, sugarcane shoot borer, T. schistaceana was determined to establish an integrated method of controlling this pest. The sex pheromone was extracted from the abdominal tips of virgin females. Using laboratory bioassay in a small flight tunnel, 2 active components of the sex pheromone were isolated. The major and minor components were identified as (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate and (E)-9,11-dodecadienyl acetate, resp. The major component alone had no attractivity but a mixture of the 2 components showed strong activity in sugarcane fields. The sex pheromone of T. schistaceana was determined to be a 100:1 mixture of (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate and (E)-9,11-dodecadienyl acetate. The synergist increasing the attractivity of the sex pheromone was (E)-7,9-decadienyl acetate. The best formulation for the sex attractant was a mixture of the 2 pheromone components and the synergist at a ratio of 1000:10:1.

Ascidiacyclamide [cyclo(-Ile1,5-oxazoline2,6-D-Val3,7-thiazole4,8-)2] is a cytotoxic cyclic peptide from ascidian. Through structural analyses using monosubstituted analogs (Xaa1: Ala, 2-aminobutyric acid, Val, cyclohexylglycine, and phenylglycine), we previously demonstrated the conformational equilibrium between its square and folded forms. As the bulkiness of the Xaa1 residue side chain was reduced, spontaneous folding was promoted, and the cytotoxicity decreased accordingly. In the present study, five disubstituted analogs in which a tert-leucine residue (Tle) was incorporated at the 5-position of the abovementioned monosubstituted analogs were synthesized, after which their structures were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, CD (CD) spectral measurements, and 1H NMR-based quant. anal. The side chains of the Tle and Ile residues are structural isomers of one another, and the Tle residue bearing the tert-Bu group can be expected to play a role as a building block. In fact, peptides incorporating Tle5 exhibited much less spontaneous folding than their Ile5 counterparts in both crystal and solution Increases in enthalpy and entropy due to the tert-Bu group during the folding process resulted in increased conformational free energy (ΔG°). The powerful plasticity of the tert-Bu group would stabilize the square form relating with cytotoxicity.
