BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is endorsed by multiple societies as the most effective treatment for obesity. Psychosocial functioning has also been noted to improve for most patients after bariatric surgery. However, some studies have shown an increase in post-operative suicide risk. The aim of this study was to review the published literature and evaluate the association of bariatric surgery with suicide events and suicide/self-harm attempts in patients who have undergone weight loss surgery. METHODS: MEDLINE and Embase were searched from inception through January 2018 for retrospective or prospective studies reporting mortality outcomes and self-harm or suicide rates after bariatric procedures. The primary outcome was the pooled event rate with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for suicide. Secondary outcomes were suicide/self-harm attempts after bariatric surgery compared to same population prior to surgery and to matched control subjects, with the respective calculated odds ratios (OR) and 95% CI. RESULTS: From 227 citations, 32 studies with 148,643 subjects were eligible for inclusion. The patients were predominantly females (76.9%). Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) was the most commonly performed procedure (58.9%). The post-bariatric suicide event rate was 2.7/1000 patients (95% CI 0.0019-0.0038), while the suicide/self-harm attempt event rate was 17/1000 patients (95% CI 0.01-0.03). The self-harm/suicide attempt risk was higher after bariatric surgery within the same population with OR of 1.9 (95% CI 1.23-2.95), and compared to matched control subjects, OR 3.8 (95% CI, 2.19-6.59). CONCLUSIONS: Post-bariatric surgery patients had higher self-harm/suicide attempt risk compared to age-, sex-, and BMI-matched controls. Various pre- and post-surgical psychosocial, pharmacokinetic, physiologic, and medical factors may be involved.

Preibsch, Heike’s team published research in Academic radiology in 2018-08-24 | CAS: 123-29-5

Academic radiology published new progress about BPE; Breast; DCIS; MR Imaging; Mammography. 123-29-5 belongs to class esters-buliding-blocks, name is Ethyl nonanoate, and the molecular formula is C11H22O2, Synthetic Route of 123-29-5.

Preibsch, Heike published the artcileAccuracy of Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging Compared to Mammography in the Preoperative Detection and Measurement of Pure Ductal Carcinoma In Situ: A Retrospective Analysis., Synthetic Route of 123-29-5, the main research area is BPE; Breast; DCIS; MR Imaging; Mammography.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) hinders imaging detection due to multifocal appearance and discontinuous growth. Preoperative determination of its extent is therefore challenging. Aim of this study was to investigate the additional benefit of breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to mammography (MG) in the diagnosis of DCIS according to size and grading. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 295 patients with biopsy-proven, pure DCIS. Mean patient age was 57.0 years (27-87 years). All patients obtained MG. Additional MRI was performed in 41.7% (123/295). Mammographic breast density, background parenchymal enhancement (BPE), tumor size and grading were analysed. Tumor size on MG and MRI were compared to histopathological size of the surgical specimen. RESULTS: Mean tumor size was 39.6 mm. DCIS was occult on MG in 24.4% (30/123) and on MRI in 1.6% (2/123). Size was underestimated by 4.6 mm (mean) mammographically. DCIS was high grade in 54.5% (67/123), intermediate grade in 40.7% (50/123) and low grade in 4.9% (6/123). MG was exact regarding tumor size in low grade DCIS, underestimated intermediate grade DCIS by 1 mm (median) and high grade DCIS by 10.5 mm. MRI overestimated low grade DCIS by 1 mm (median), was exact regarding intermediate grade DCIS and underestimated high grade DCIS by 1 mm. BPE did not influence tumor detection and measurement. CONCLUSION: MRI outperforms MG in the detection and size estimation of DCIS and can reduce positive margin rates.

Torulaspora delbrueckii is a widely studied non-Saccharomyces yeast, described as having a pos. impact on the organoleptic quality of wines, however, little is known about its impact on the production of raspberry wine. In this study, we compared combined use of S. cerevisiae/T. delbrueckii pair, i.e., in sequential inoculation (RT) and co-fermentation (RC) modes, with spontaneous fermentation (RU) and single S. cerevisiae inoculation (RS), on various properties of raspberry wine including fermentation behaviors (using yeast counts and next-generation sequencing method), basic composition (by OIV, 2019), volatile profile (using headspace-gas chromatog.-ion mobility spectrometry), sensory property (by quant. descriptive analyses) and biogenic amine levels. All the alc. fermentations were completed within 9 days; T. delbrueckii was inhibited by S. cerevisiae in the co-culture; and Saccharomyces and Mrakia were the most abundant species in RU. A total of 40 aromas was identified, with RT abundant in volatile esters, ketones and terpenes and others showing relatively lower intensities. During sensory evaluation, RT was characterized by ‘fruity’ and ‘sweet’ notes; RC was notable for a high ‘floral’ attribute; RU scored the highest in ‘pungent’ and RS showed intermedium intensities for most descriptors. Partial least squares regression showed the relationship between aromas and sensory descriptors. As for biogenic amine, RU contained the highest total amount and RS had the least. Overall, RT had greater potential to be used in the production of raspberry wine.

Katam, Keerthi published the artcileEffect of solids retention time on the performance of alga-activated sludge association in municipal wastewater treatment and biofuel production, Computed Properties of 110-42-9, the main research area is Chlorella Scenedesmus activated sludge municipal wastewater treatment biofuel production.

Abstract: This research studied the effect of solids retention time (SRT) on algal-activated sludge (AAS) association in carbon-nitrogen-phosphorus removal and lipid synthesis from municipal wastewater. Five 500-mL test reactors were operated at different SRTs (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 days) parallelly, in a draw-and-fill mode with external aeration. The organic carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) removal were pos. correlated with SRT. The highest C, N, and P removal rates of 89, 73, and 91% were observed at 10-day SRT. The algal percentage was more than 60% in the mixed biomass at all the SRTs at a steady state. The lipid content ranged from 15 to 30% and declined with an increase in SRT, with 60% saturated and monounsaturated fatty acid at all the SRTs. The cetane number varied from 56 to 64 indicating a good-quality biofuel. The Fourier transform IR spectroscopy transmittance spectrum for 10-day SRT biomass showed the presence of chloroalkane, alcs., phenols, alkane, esters, allene, alkynes, and phosphine. The AAS system can be used as the main treatment unit for treating municipal wastewater in a single reactor with SRT greater than 4 days.

Fermentation published new progress about Aeration. 106-32-1 belongs to class esters-buliding-blocks, name is Ethyl octanoate, and the molecular formula is C10H20O2, Quality Control of 106-32-1.

Varela, Cristian published the artcileEffect of aeration on yeast community structure and volatile composition in uninoculated chardonnay wines, Quality Control of 106-32-1, the main research area is uninoculated chardonnay wine aeration yeast community structure volatile composition.

Uninoculated wines are regarded as having improved mouthfeel and texture and more complex flavor profiles when compared to wines inoculated with com. S. cerevisiae strains. Uninoculated fermentation involves a complex microbial succession of yeasts and bacteria during fermentation Microbial population dynamics are affected by several factors that can ultimately determine if a particular species or strain contributes to wine aroma and flavor. In this work, we have studied the effect of aeration, a common winemaking practice, on the yeast microbiota during uninoculated Chardonnay wine fermentation The timing of aeration and then aeration intensity were evaluated across two successive vintages. While the timing of aeration significantly impacted fermentation efficiency across oxygen treatments, different levels of aeration intensity only differed when compared to the non-aerated control ferments. Air addition increased the viable cell population size of yeast from the genera Hanseniaspora, Lachancea, Metschnikowia and Torulaspora in both vintages. While in 2019, a high relative abundance was found for Hanseniaspora species in aerated ferments, in 2020, T. delbrueckii was visibly more abundant than other species in response to aeration. Accompanying the observed differences in yeast community structure, the chem. profile of the finished wines was also different across the various aeration treatments. However, excessive aeration resulted in elevated concentrations of Et acetate and acetic acid, which would likely have a detrimental effect on wine quality. This work demonstrates the role of aeration in shaping yeast population dynamics and modulating a volatile profile in uninoculated wines, and highlights the need for careful air addition to avoid a neg. sensory impact on wine flavor and aroma.

Khachatoorian, Careen published the artcileTracing the movement of electronic cigarette flavor chemicals and nicotine from refill fluids to aerosol, lungs, exhale, and the environment, Computed Properties of 140-11-4, the main research area is aerosol lung nicotine electronic cigarette; Electronic cigarettes; Environmental contamination; Flavor chemicals; Human exposure; Nicotine; Retention.

Given the high concentrations of nicotine and flavor chems. in EC (electronic cigarette) fluids, it is important to determine how efficiently they transfer to aerosols, how well they are retained by users (exposure), and if they are exhaled into the environment where they settle of surfaces forming ECEAR (EC exhaled aerosol residue). To quantify the flavor chems. and nicotine in refill fluids, inhaled aerosols, and exhaled aerosols. Then deduce their retention and contribution to ECEAR. Flavor chems. and nicotine were identified and quantified by GC-MS in two refill fluids, smoking machine-generated aerosols, and aerosols exhaled by 10 human participants (average age 21; 7 males). Machine generated aerosols were made with varying puff durations and two wattages (40 and 80). Participants generated exhale ad libitum; their exhale was quantified, and chem. retention and contribution to ECEAR was modeled.””. Dewberry Cream”” had five dominant (≥1 mg/mL) flavor chems. (maltol, ethyl maltol, vanillin, Et vanillin, furaneol), while “”Cinnamon Roll”” had one (cinnamaldehyde). Nicotine transferred well to aerosols irresp. of topog.; however, transfer efficiencies of flavor chems. depended on the chem., puff volume, puff duration, pump head, and EC power. Participants could be classified as “”mouth inhalers”” or “”lung inhalers”” based on their exhale of flavor chems. and nicotine and retention. Lung inhalers had high retention and exhaled low concentrations of EC chems. Only mouth inhalers exhaled sufficient concentrations of flavor chems./nicotine to contribute to chem. deposition on environmental surfaces (ECEAR). These data help distinguish two types of EC users, add to our knowledge of chem. exposure during vaping, and provide information useful in regulating EC use.

Dielec. barrier discharge (DBD) has been widely used as end-of-pipe technol. to degrade low-concentration volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. In this work, the influence of DBD conditions including discharge voltage, VOC residence time in DBD plasma, VOC initial concentration and synergistic effect of multiple VOC mixing on the decomposition efficiency of three VOCs (toluene, Et acetate and acetone) were investigated systematically. One focus of this work was to investigate size distribution and chem. composition of aerosol byproducts. The results suggested that high discharge voltage, long residence time and low VOC initial concentration would increase VOC removal ratio and their conversion to CO2. Among the three VOCs, toluene was easiest to form particles with a mode diameter between 40 and 100 nm and most difficult to be decomposed completely to CO2. Maximum aerosol yield from toluene was observed to account for 13.1 ± 1.0% of initial concentration (400 ppm) in the condition of discharge voltage 6 kV and residence time 0.52 s. Gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry anal. showed that non-nitrogen containing benzene derivatives, nitrophenol derivatives and amines were the main components of toluene aerosol byproducts. For Et acetate and acetone, aerosols could only be produced in the condition of high discharge voltages (>7.5 kV) and long gas residence time (≥0.95 s) with a bimodal distribution below 20 nm. When the mixture of three VOCs was fed into the plasma, we observed a strong synergistic effect that led to higher VOC removal ratio, but lower conversion of decomposed VOCs to CO2 and aerosols.
