We found that in situ generated cerium(IV) carboxylate generated by mixing the precursor Ce((OBu)-Bu-t)(4) with the corresponding carboxylic acids served as efficient photocatalysts for the direct formation of carboxyl radicals from carboxylic acids under blue light-emitting diodes (blue LEDs) irradiation and air, resulting in catalytic decarboxylative oxygenation of aliphatic carboxylic acids to give C-O bond-forming products such as aldehydes and ketones. Control experiments revealed that hexanuclear Ce(IV) carboxylate clusters initially formed in the reaction mixture and the ligand-to-metal charge transfer nature of the Ce(IV) carboxylate clusters was responsible for the high catalytic performance to transform the carboxylate ligands to the carboxyl radical. In addition, the Ce(IV) carboxylate cluster catalyzed direct lactonization of 2-isopropylbenzoic acid to produce the corresponding peroxy lactone and gamma-lactone via intramolecular 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (1,5-HAT).

Objective: To investigate the efficacies of 12 essential oil (EO) formulations from three Zingiberaceae plants (Alpinia galanga, Curcuma zedoaria, and Zingiber cassumunar) individually and in combination with an augmenting Eucalyptus globulus (E. globulus) EO against females of Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus) and Anopheles minimus (An. minimus). Methods: These formulations were evaluated for their ovicidal, oviposition deterrent and adulticidal activities against Ae. albopictus and An. minimus by a topical method, a double-choice method and a WHO susceptibility test, respectively. Results: It was found that all formulations of Zingiberaceae plants EOs augmented with E. globulus EO were more effective in oviposition deterrent, ovicidal, and adulticidal activities against the two mosquito species than all of the formulations used without E. globulus EO. Their oviposition deterrent, ovicidal and adulticidal activities were equivalent to those of 10% w/v cypennethrin. In contrast, 70% v/v ethyl alcohol as a control alone was not effective at all. The highest synergistic effect in effective repellency against Ae. albopictus was achieved by 5% Alpinia galanga EO + 5% E. globulus EO and against An. minimus was 5% Zingiber cassumunar EO + 5% E. globulus EO. Moreover, the highest synergistic effects in ovicidal activities against Ae. albopictus and An. minimus were achieved by 10% Zingiber cassumunar EO + 10% E. globulus EO and 5% Curcuma zedoaria EO + 5% E. globulus EO, respectively. For the adulticidal activities, the highest synergistic effect against two mosquitoes was achieved by 5% Curcuma zedoaria EO + 5% E. globulus EO. Conclusions: These results suggest that Zingiberaceae plant EOs augmented with E. globulus EO have a high potential to be developed into oviposition deterrent, ovicidal, and adulticidal agents for controlling populations of Ae. albopictus and An. minimus.

Homogeneous chitosan/poly(methacrylic acid) solution containing Pd(2+)cations was successfully prepared by addition of pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde. Then, this homogeneous solution was smoothly electrospun into uniform composite nanofibers with mean diameter of 442 +/- 163 nm, followed by annealing at elevated temperature to improve the solvent resistance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that the solvent resistance of the composite nanofibers was improved with the increment of annealing temperature. FT-IR spectra demonstrate that the chemical structure of the composite nanofibers was not oxidized after annealing process. Moreover, the palladium species were homogeneously incorporated inside the composite nanofibers. The catalytic performance of these novel composite nanofibers was evaluated by Heck reaction. The catalysis result shows that these composite nanofibers were very efficient to catalyze the Heck reaction of aromatic iodides with acrylates with yields over 86%. Moreover, these composite nanofibers can be reused for 10 times with little decrement of yield.

BACKGROUND Environmental safety of the agricultural utilization of livestock and poultry manures from intensive farming is attracting great attention and is effective as a good source of nitrogen for sustainable crop production. The present study aimed to determine the effects of organic poultry manure applications on the biological value and essential oil content of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). In this context, different doses of chicken, kibele (fermented chicken manure) and turkey manure (750, 1000, 1250 and 1500 kg da(-1)) with a control (no manure) were applied by sowing. RESULTS The essential oils consisted of p-Allyl-anisole as the most abundant component (5.65-17.90%), followed by nerol (6.69-16.11%), linalool (5.10-10.81%) and z-citral (5.23-10.73%). The contents of most of the chemical constituents varied significantly (P < 0.05) with organic poultry manure applications. The highest concentration for essential oils components was found in the chicken manure application. Both the antioxidant activity and total phenolic amounts of the basil extracts varied significantly as the organic poultry manure applications changed. The highest antioxidant activity and total phenolic amounts were obtained in the treatments with chicken manure doses of 1000 and 1250 kg da(-1), which were significantly different compared to the other treatments and the control treatment. Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of the essential oils against bacterial strains: Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 was assessed by the disc diffusion method and determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration. The results of antimicrobial assays indicated that all of the tested microorganisms were affected. The highest antibacterial activity against all tested microbial species was observed with 1250 kg da(-1) chicken manure applications. CONCLUSION Among the organic poultry fertilizations, chicken fertilization was of particular interest. Especially, chicken manure doses of 1000-1250 kg da(-1) had the highest antibacterial and antioxidant activity, as well as total phenolics, flavonoids and essential oil components. In this research, the antibacterial activity and the interaction mechanisms of the major chemical constituent present in the Alpinia galanga rhizomes essential oil (AGREO) were investigated. Ethyl cinnamate, methyl cinnamate and n-pentadecane were the major components of AGREO. The antibacterial mechanism of AGREO on Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EHEC O157) was evaluated and the results proved that the potent antibacterial activity of AGREO was due to higher passive permeability of bacterial cell membrane, followed by crucial intracellular components efflux. Additionally, AGREO disrupted the intracellular physiological metabolism of EHEC O157, including inhibition of P-type ATPases activity and down-regulation expression of four virulence genes associated with EHEC infections. Notably, molecular docking studies suggested that ethyl cinnamate probably competed with the structural NAD(P)(+) for the binding sites of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), resulting in a decrease in G6PD activity with subsequent suppression of respiratory metabolism. The spectroscopic techniques and molecular docking studies proved that the AGREO major components were prone to bind to the minor groove of DNA.

A highly active and recyclable Pd-deposited catalyst has been successfully prepared for the Heck reaction. Bio-oil liquid, a byproduct from the microwave pyrolysis of wastepaper, is employed to immobilize palladium nanoparticles on a solid support. FTIR, GC, and NMR results indicate the self-polymerization feature of bio-oil, thus giving rise to a uniform carbonaceous layer coated around the surface of the catalyst. Characteristic analysis of the catalyst indicates that palladium nanoparticles are well-dispersed on the parent SBA-15 solid substrate, which is attributed to the carbonaceous layer that is derived from bio-oil carbonization, allowing a high catalytic performance as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck reaction. The as-synthesized catalyst demonstrates remarkable recyclability with firm deposition of palladium nanoparticles on the solid support and could be reused without a activity. dramatic decrease in catalytic activity.

The [4+2] cycloaddition reaction provided tetrahydrothiopyran, which is found in biologically active natural products, in high yield with high diastereoselectivity by using readily available TiCl4. This synthetic method was applicable to a wide range of thionoesters and cyclobutanones. The ketone and S,O-ketal functionalities of the product could be reduced with excellent diastereoselectivity. Furthermore, the C-O bond was transformed into a C-C bond, affording contiguous tetrasubstituted carbon centers.
