In the present study, the modification of a mesoporous organosilica nanocomposite SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous 15) was carried out in two steps, first through the surface functionalization of SBA-Pr-NH(2)with 2-chloroquinoline-3-carbaldehyde to form SBA-Pr-NCQ, and then through a post-modification process with palladium ions. The target nanocompound structure of SBA-Pr-NCQ-Pd was characterized by different techniques (thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). The catalytic performance of the porous inorganic-organic hybrid nanocomposite (SBA-Pr-NCQ-Pd) in one of the most important carbon-carbon bond-forming processes, the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction of aryl halides and methacrylate in water/ethanol media, was examined. Compared to previous reports, this protocol afforded some advantages, such as high yields of products, short reaction times, catalyst stability without leaching, simple methodology, easy workup, and greener conditions. Also, the nanocatalyst can be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused several times without a significant decrease in activity and promises economic as well as environmental benefits.

Combination of PdCl2 with 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane in the presence of activated carbon was found to be an effective catalyst system for the cleavage reaction of C-O bond of O-t-Bu moieties. The present catalytic reaction offers a practical method for the deprotection of tert-butyl esters, tert-butyl ethers, O-Boc, and N-Boc derivatives under mild conditions. The addition of activated carbon in the reaction mixture was proved to be crucial for not only sustaining the catalytic activity but also trapping the palladium species after the reaction.

A mild and efficient protocol for the intramolecular aromatic C-H oxygenation of 2-biphenylcarboxylic acids has been achieved via iron photocatalysis. The 2-biphenylcarboxylic acids with a diverse array of substituents at both phenyl rings could furnish the oxygenation products in good to excellent yields. We speculate that the aryl carboxylate-iron(III) complexes should generate the aroyloxy radicals and iron(II) upon visible light irradiation.

By using 2-fluoro-substituted diaryliodonium salts, a novel benzocylization has been accomplished for the synthesis of 3,4-benzocoumarin derivatives via a cascade of ortho-arylation and defluorination in the presence of palladium catalysts. The reaction exhibits a broad compatibility of readily available aromatic acids with an excellent level of site-selectivity. Mechanistic investigations revealed a unique reactivity of carboxylic acid directed arylation by followed nucleophilic substitution of aromatic fluoride in the present system.

Nano-ferrite-supported Cu nanoparticles (Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs) catalyzed anti-Markovnikov-selective hydroboration of alkenes with B(2)pin(2) is reported under mild reaction conditions. This protocol can be applied to a broad range of substrates with high functional group compatibility. In addition, we demonstrated the use of Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs as a catalyst for the beta-borylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and ester, providing alkylboronate esters in up to 98% yield. Reuse of the magnetically recyclable catalyst resulted in no significant loss of activity in up to five reaction runs for both systems.

Despite advances in ovarian cancer treatment, the five-year overall survival rate is less than 30% with the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs). To develop CSC-targeting therapy, a series of 18 beta-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) derivatives containing cinnamamide moiety have been designed, synthesized, and screened for their antiproliferative activity in SKOV3 and OVCAR3 cells. Most of the compounds exhibited stronger antiproliferative activity than GA, and compound 7c was the most active one. Further biological studies showed that compound 7c could induce apoptosis and suppress migration. In addition, compound 7c could not only observably decrease the colony formation and sphere formation ability, but also significantly reduce the CD44(+), CD133(+), and ALDH(+) subpopulation in SKOV3 and OVCAR3 cells. In conclusion, these results indicate that compound 7c is a promising anti-CSC agent for further anti-ovarian cancer studies.

This manuscript describes a visible-light-mediated organo-photoredox catalytic process for vicinal difunctionalization of alkenes using heteroatom nucleophiles and aliphatic redox active esters. A wide range of heteroatom nucleophiles including alcohols, water, carboxylic acids, amides, and halogens can be used for this reaction. This radical relay type reaction allows forging of C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) with a carbon centered radical and C(sp(3))-heteroatom bonds with a benzyl cation on the vinylarenes with complete regioselectivity in a single step.

The synthesis of a commercial fragrance, methyl cinnamate, via Fischer esterification was evaluated for use as a second-year organic chemistry course. The experiment utilizes trans-cinnamic acid, a commercial flavoring that possesses a mild honey floral odor, as an inexpensive starting material. Both the starting material and the product are listed as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) for use in foods and fragrances. The high-yielding experiment enables students to explore concepts of flavor and fragrances, transmutation of scent, catalysis, green chemistry, NMR spectroscopy, thin layer chromatography (TLC), and acid-base extractions. In addition to the commonly employed sulfuric acid catalyst, alternative conditions were developed using p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate as an easier to handle catalyst, and conditions for performing both reactions under microwave irradiation are also reported. The experiment was analyzed in a second-year organic chemistry laboratory over six semesters.
