NIR light-induced polymerization has attracted more and more attention in the photopolymerization field due to the possibility to use safer and more penetrating wavelengths, reducing the hazardousness. Here, a novel perspective for the free radical polymerization of acrylate-based monomers based on triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) is proposed, avoiding the introduction of heavy metals, usually required in the TTA processes. Thermal imaging experiments and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy are resp. used to record the temperature during NIR irradiation and measure the reactive function conversion. The competition between the TTA-UC and the NIR photothermal activation is investigated to compare the relative efficiency of both NIR processes. In view of the results obtained by the different methods, the photothermal effect seems to get the upper hand over the photoactivation of the system.

Transesterification of Me-esters was accelerated by an in situ-generated metal-free catalyst comprising a quaternary alkylammonium salt and an epoxide was developed. The combination of a quaternary alkylammonium acetate and glycidol was optimal, and various esters R1CO2R2 [R1 = 2-thiophenyl, Ph, Bn, etc.; R2 = 2-Bu, n-C6H13, Bn, prenyl] were synthesized from Me-esters with alcs. in good to excellent yield. Anal. of the catalyst solution revealed that basic species were generated by the ring-opening reaction of epoxide.

Thymic carcinoma is a rare type of cancer without an established standard pharmaceutical treatment. This study investigated the antitumor effect of di-Me itaconate (DI), a cell-permeable derivative of itaconate, on human thymic carcinoma cell line. Human thymic carcinoma cell line Ty82 was used to evaluate the effect of DI on cell viability. Western blotting and immunohistochem. were performed to determine the mol. mechanism of antitumor effects of DI on Ty82. DI suppressed cell growth and promoted apoptosis of Ty82. The suppressive effect of DI on Ty82 was mediated by the downregulation of lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA), and the subsequent decrease in the activity of mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR). DI exhibited synergistic antitumor effects with a specific inhibitor of large neutral amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1), an amino acid transporter currently being investigated as a novel target for cancer therapy. Our findings demonstrate that DI is a novel potential strategy for thymic carcinoma treatment.

Herein, the first modular, dual catalytic difunctionalization of unactivated alkenes viz., but-3-en-1-ylbenzene, 3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl benzoate, pent-4-en-1-yl 2-[4-[(2-oxocyclopentyl)methyl]phenyl]propanoate, etc. via manganese-catalyzed radical ligand transfer (RLT) was reported. This RLT elementary step involves a coordinated nucleophile rebounding to a carbon-centered radical to form a new C-X bond in analogy to the radical rebound step in metalloenzymes. The protocol leverages the synergetic cooperation of both a photocatalyst and earth-abundant manganese complex to deliver two radical species in succession to minimally functionalized alkenes, enabling modular diversification of the radical intermediate by a high-valent manganese species capable of delivering various external nucleophiles. A broad scope (97 examples, including drugs/natural product motifs), mild conditions, and excellent chemoselectivity were shown for a variety of substrates and fluoroalkyl fragments. Mechanistic and kinetic studies provide insights into the radical nature of the dual catalytic transformation and support radical ligand transfer (RLT) as a new strategy to deliver diverse functionality selectively to carbon-centered radicals.

Iron-gall ink is one of the most important inks in the history of western civilization. The deep black color results from Fe3+ complexes with phenolic compounds available in gall extracts Unfortunately, it induces the degradation of both ink and support over time. Furthermore, our knowledge of these complex mol. structures is limited. This work aims to overcome this gap, revealing essential information about the complex structures of these pigments and dyes that will create a breakthrough in the next generation of conservation treatments. It presents the first in-depth phenolic identification and quantification of extracts and inks, prepared with and without gum arabic (an essential additive in medieval recipes). Five representative Iberian recipes were selected and prepared Their phenolic profile was analyzed by HPLC-DAD and HPLC-ESI-MS, which revealed that the phenolic compounds present in higher concentration, in the gall extracts, are pentagalloylglucose and hexagalloylglucose (0.15 ± 0.01-32 ± 3 mg/mL), except for one recipe, in which gallic acid is the main phenolic. The influence of the ingredients is also discussed by deconstructing the recipes: extracts of additives as pomegranate peel and solvents used in the extraction of the galls (vinegar and white wine) were characterized.
