In the presented work, five bio-based and bio-degradable cyclic esters, i.e. lactones, have been investigated as possible phase change materials for applications in latent heat storage systems. Commercial natural lactones such as epsilon-caprolactone and gamma-valerolactone were easily purchased through chemical suppliers, while 1,2-campholide, oxa-adamantanone and dibenzochromen-6-one were synthesized through Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The compounds were characterized with respect to attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, in order to confirm their chemical structures and identity. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to measure the phase change temperatures, enthalpies of fusion, degradation temperatures, as well to estimate the degree of supercooling. The lactones showed a wide range of phase change temperatures from -40 degrees C to 290 degrees C, making them a high interest for both low and high temperature latent heat storage applications, given the lack of organic phase change materials covering phase change temperature ranges below 0 degrees C and above 80 degrees C. However, low enthalpies of fusion, high degrees of supercooling and thermal degradations at low temperatures were registered for all samples, rendering them unsuitable as phase change materials.

A methylation reagent for compounds bearing N-H, O-H, and S-H functionalities was developed. Methyl trifluoroacetate (MTFA) was commonly considered as trifluoroacetylating reagent or trifluoromethylating reagent. In this work, we report the methylation behavior of MTFA under mild conditions with good functional group tolerance, allowing the transformation of a wide range of substrates, including N,H-heteroaromatic compounds, phenolic compounds, carboxylic acids, thiophenols, secondary amides and imides, in high yields. This method was preliminarily applied to the chemoselective methylation of bifunctionalized secondary amide.

A diboron-mediated rhodium-catalysed transfer hydrogenation system using water as the hydrogen donor is developed. In addition to a series of alkenes with good functional group tolerance, this rhodium-based catalytic system also effectively reduces aldehydes and ketones. A plausible mechanism involving the Rh-I-catalysed hydrogen generation and Rh-0-catalysed hydrogenation is proposed for the reaction.

In contrast to the plethora of large-bite-angle bisphosphine ligands available to transition-metal catalysis, the development of small-bite-angle bisphosphine ligands has suffered from the limited structural variations accessible on their single-atom-containing backbones. Herein, we report the design and applications of a discrete very small bite-angle bisphosphine ligand, namely, FMPhos. Featuring a fluorene-methylene unit appended on the single-carbon linker, the ligand harbors an unusually rigid backbone that presumably stabilizes its complexation with transition metals during catalysis. Compared with the known dppm ligand, it exhibited superior reactivity and regioselectivity in a number of alkene hydrofunctionalization reactions, catalyzed by iridium and rhodium.

A biocompatible hybrid system composed of graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS) and ionic liquid decorated cyclodextrin nanosponge (CDNS-IL) is synthesized and applied for the immobilization of Pd and Fe3O4 nanoparticles to furnish a magnetic catalyst, Fe3O4/Pd@Hybrid. The justification for designing this hybrid system was benefiting from the capability of CDNS for formation of inclusion complex with substrates and acting as phase transfer agent. Moreover, IL itself could exert catalytic activity and improve anchoring Pd, while magnetic nano particles could render the catalyst easily separable. Moreover, the functional groups on CS could contribute to Pd anchoring. The catalytic activity of Fe3O4/Pd@Hybrid for promoting hydrogenation of nitro arenes and two coupling reactions in aqueous media was investigated. The results established that the catalyst could efficiently promote all the reactions under mild reaction condition. The investigation of the catalyst recyclability confirmed that the catalyst could be recycled for three reaction runs. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

By combining N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS)” as the safe chlorine source with Acr(+)-Mes as the photocatalyst, we successfully achieved benzylic C-H bond chlorination under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, benzylic chlorides could be converted to benzylic ethers smoothly in a one-pot manner by adding sodium methoxide. This mild and scalable chlorination method worked effectively for diverse toluene derivatives, especially for electron-deficient substrates. Careful mechanistic studies supported that NCS provided a hydrogen abstractor N-centered succinimidyl radical, which was responsible for the cleavage of the benzylic C-H bond, relying on the reducing ability of Acr(center dot)-Mes.

Catalytic reduction of carboxamides into their corresponding amines is an attractive but extremely challenging transformation, which often meets with limited success; the valuable amine products drive ongoing research in this area. Here we show the direct deoxygenation of carboxamides using earth-abundant lanthanum catalysts in the presence of HBpin, presenting good to excellent yields with broad substrate scope and functional group/heteroatom tolerance. Moreover, this method is also effective in catalysing the hydroboration of esters. Finally, selective cleavage of the amide group bonds (C-N versus C-O) could be achieved based on the nature of the nitrogen substituents. Amide reduction via hydroboration is challenging, and catalysts often exhibit limited substrate scope. Here the authors report synthesis of a lanthanum cluster as a catalyst for the hydroboration of esters and amides, capable of reducing a wide range of primary, secondary and tertiary amides to amines.
