The fruits of Zanthoxylum armatum DC. were collected from different altitudes (1000-2000 m) and populations (wild and cultivated) from Salyan district, Nepal. The essential oil was extracted by Clevenger apparatus and the components were analyzed through GC-MS. The yield of essential oil obtained from hydro-distillation of fruits ranged from 2.72 to 7.6%. The maximum yield was 7.6% from wild fruits at 1600-1800 m altitude and the minimum was 2.72% from cultivated fruits at 1000-1200 m altitude. This was the highest recorded essential oil yield from Z. armatum fruits. A total of 13 volatile compounds were identified from the essential oil by GC-MS analysis. The major components were linalool, cinnamate (E)methyl, limonene, myrcene, sabinene and terpinen-4-ol, which were present in higher proportion in all the samples. Other components were identified in a very low proportion. The main component linalool occurred in the highest proportion (74.12%) from wild populations at 1600-1800 m altitude and the lowest (44.73%) was from cultivated populations at 1000-1200 m altitude. The highest proportion of linalool was also reported for the first time in this study from Z. armatum fruits. Among the six major components of the essential oil, terpinen-4-ol was present in the lowest proportion. Results of the present study indicated that the altitude and habitat types could affect the essential oil composition in Zanthoxylum armatum fruits.

Many classical and emerging methodologies in organic chemistry rely on carbon dioxide (CO2) extrusion to generate reactive intermediates for bond-forming events. Synthetic reactions that involve the microscopic reverse-the carboxylation of reactive intermediates-have conventionally been undertaken using very different conditions. We report that chemically stable C(sp(3)) carboxylates, such as arylacetic acids and malonate half-esters, undergo uncatalyzed reversible decarboxylation in dimethylformamide solution. Decarboxylation-carboxylation occurs with substrates resistant to protodecarboxylation by Bronsted acids under otherwise identical conditions. Isotopically labeled carboxylic acids can be prepared in high chemical and isotopic yield by simply supplying an atmosphere of (CO2)-C-13 to carboxylate salts in polar aprotic solvents. An understanding of carboxylate reactivity in solution enables conditions for the trapping of aldehydes, ketones, and alpha,beta-unsaturated esters.

Ovarian cancer is associated with a high percentage of recurrence of tumors and resistance to chemotherapy. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are responsible for cancer progression, tumor recurrence, metastasis, and chemoresistance. Thus, developing CSC-targeting therapy is an urgent need in cancer research and clinical application. In an attempt to achieve potent and selective anti-CSC agents, a series of celastrol derivatives with cinnamamide chains were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-ovarian cancer activities. Most of the compounds exhibited stronger antiproliferative activity than celastrol, and celastrol derivative 7g with a 3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamamide side chain was found to be the most potent antiproliferative agent against ovarian cancer cells with an IC50 value of 0.6 mu M. Additionally, compound 7g significantly inhibited the colony formation ability and reduced the number of tumor spheres. Furthermore, compound 7g decreased the percentage of CD44(+), CD133(+) and ALDH(+) cells. Thus, compound 7g is a promising anti-CSC agent and could serve as a candidate for the development of new antiovarian cancer drugs. (C) 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

We report an inversed Arbuzov reaction of the fullerene derivatives C60Ar5Cl with trialkyl phosphites P(OR)(3) producing alkylated fullerene derivatives C60Ar5R (R = Me, Et, iPr, nBu) with almost quantitative yields. This reaction provides a convenient synthetic route for the preparation of a large variety of functionalized fullerene derivatives with tailored properties, e.g. water-soluble compounds demonstrating promising antiviral activities against HCMV, HSV1, HIV and several influenza virus strains.

Aims We sought to examine sex differences in congestion in patients hospitalized for acute heart failure (AHF). Understanding congestive patterns in women and men with AHF may provide insights into sex differences in the presentation and prognosis of AHF patients. Methods and results In a prospective, two-site study in adults hospitalized for AHF, four-zone lung ultrasound (LUS) was performed at the time of echocardiography at baseline (LUS1) and, in a subset, pre-discharge (LUS2). B-lines on LUS and echocardiographic images were analysed offline, blinded to clinical information and outcomes. Among 349 patients with LUS1 data (median age 74, 59% male, and 87% White), women had higher left ventricular ejection fraction (mean 43% vs. 36%, P < 0.001), higher tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (mean 17 vs. 15 mm, P = 0.021), and higher measures of filling pressures (median E/e' 20 vs. 16, P < 0.001). B-line number on LUS1 (median 6 vs. 6, P = 0.69) and admission N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels (median 3932 vs. 3483 pg/ml, P = 0.77) were similar in women and men. In 121 patients with both LUS1 and LUS2 data, there was a similar and significant decrease in B-lines from baseline to discharge in both women and men. The risk of the composite 90 day outcome increased with higher B-line number on four-zone LUS2: unadjusted hazard ratio for each B-line tertile was 1.86 (95% confidence interval 1.08-3.20, P = 0.025) in women and 1.65 (95% confidence interval 1.03-2.64, P = 0.037) in men (interaction P = 0.72). Conclusions Among patients with AHF, echocardiographic markers differed between women and men at baseline, whereas B-line number on LUS did not. This report describes the synthesis of five new colorful 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts, a largely unexplored structural unit. These rare compounds are benzannulated structural derivatives of the well-known flavylium cations found widespread in natural pigments. These new dyes are directly compared to three previously synthesized 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts as well as eight colorful isomeric 9-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation, or 9-arylxanthylium, salts. The 9-arylxanthylium unit is commonly found in the biologically important rhodamine and rosamine dyes, yet six of the analogs presented in this study were either previously unreported or not isolated. The visual and spectroscopic properties of all 16 compounds were analyzed as a function of the structural differences between the compounds. All compounds displayed reversible halochromism in organic solution, displaying bright colors under acidic conditions and becoming colorless under basic conditions. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. The idea of using biaryl structures to generate synthetic building blocks such as spirolactones is attractive because biaryl structures are abundant in biomass waste streams. However, the inertness of aromatic rings of biaryls makes it challenging to transform them into functionalized structures. In this work, we developed photoinduced dearomatization of nonphenolic biaryl compounds to generate spirolactones. We demonstrate that dearomatization can be performed via either aerobic photocatalysis or anaerobic photooxidation to tolerate specific synthetic conditions. In both pathways, dearomatization is induced by electrophilic attack of the carboxyl radical. The resulting spirodiene radical is captured by either oxygen or water in aerobic and anaerobic systems, respectively, to generate the spirodienone. These methods represent novel routes to synthesize spirolactones from the biaryl motif.

There is a lot of interest in the development of new, safer and more sustainable polar aprotic solvents due to their importance in industrial applications and significant safety issues with the most commonly used examples. One such area of application is in pharmaceutically relevant C-C coupling reactions, where polar aprotic solvents are commonly used for solubility and to stabilise reaction intermediates. Although there are now a number of excellent alternatives in the literature, to date they have not been compared in a single study. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the green solventsN-butylpyrrolidinone (NBP), gamma-valerolactone (GVL), propylene carbonate (PC) and dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene) in Heck and Baylis-Hillman reactions. Good conversions and initial rates were observed in GVL and NBP in Heck reactions. Cyrene exhibited high initial rates of reaction and high yields in the Baylis-Hillman reaction. This demonstrates Cyrene to be a promising alternative polar aprotic solvent for this reaction.

Combined water pollution with the coexistence of heavy metals and organic contaminants is of great concern for practical wastewater treatment. In this study, a jaboticaba-like nanocomposite, titanate nanotubes supported TiO2 (TiO2/TiNTs), was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal treatment. TiO2 /TiNTs had large surface area, abundant of -ONa/H groups and fine crystal anatase phase, thus exhibited both good adsorptive performance for Cu(II) and high photocatalytic activity for phenanthrene degradation. The maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity on TiO2/TiNTs was 115.0 mg/g at pH 5 according to Langmuir isotherm model, and > 95% of phenanthrene was degraded within 4 h under UV light. TiO2/TiNTs showed about 10 times higher observed rate constant (k(obs) ) for phenanthrene degradation compared to the unmodified TiNTs. More importantly, the coexistence of Cu(II) promoted photocatalytic degradation of phenanthrene, because the incorporated Cu(II) in the lattice of TiNTs could trap photo-excited electron and thus inhibited the electron-hole recombination. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicated that the sites of phenanthrene with high Fukui index (f(0)) preferred to be attacked by center dot OH radicals. The quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis revealed that the degradation intermediates had lower acute toxicity and mutagenicity than phenanthrene. TiO2/TiNTs also owned high stability, as only slight loss of Cu(II) and phenanthrene removal efficiency was observed even after four reuse cycles. The developed material in this study is of great application potential for water or wastewater treatment with multi-contaminants, and this work can help us to better understand the mechanisms on reaction between Ti-based nanomaterials and different kinds of contaminants.
