The aminohydroxylation of various alkenes using FmocNHCl as a nitrogen source is reported. In general, in the absence of a ligand, the reaction provided racemic Fmoc-protected amino alcohols with excellent regioselectivity but in low to moderate yields. However, in some instances, the yield of an amino alcohol product and the regioselectivity could be altered by the addition of a catalytic amount of triethylamine (TEA). The Sharpless asymmetric variant of this reaction (Sharpless asymmetric aminohydroxylation (SAAH)), using (DHQD)(2)PHAL (DHQD) or (DHQ)(2)PHAL (DHQ) as chiral ligands, proceeded more readily and in higher yield compared to the same reaction in the absence of a chiral ligand. The enantiomeric ratios (er) of all but two examples exceeded 90:10 with many examples giving er values of 95:5 or higher, making FmocNHCl a highly practical reagent for preparing chiral amino alcohols. The SAAH reaction using FmocNHCl was used for the preparation of D-threo-beta-hydroxyasparagine and D-threo-beta-methoxyaspartate, suitably protected for Fmoc solid phase peptide synthesis.

Urea-2,2-dihydroperoxypropane (UDHPP)- a white crystalline solid oxidant which is formed when urea is recrystallized from dihydroperoxypropane- was applied as the terminal oxidant in several oxidative procedures namely epoxidation of alpha, beta-unsaturated ketones and alkenes, oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones, bayer-villeger reaction, bromination and iodation of aniline and phenol derivatives, oxidative esterification, oxidative amidation of aromatic aldehydes, thiocyanation of aromatic compounds, and oxidation of pyridines, oxidation of secondary, allylic and benzylic alcohols. All the approaches were carried out under mild conditions and short reaction times and afforded the corresponding products in high yields.

Beyond the tandem oxa-Michael strategy, an N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed kinetic resolution approach to access highly diastereo- and enantioenriched 2-aryl-3-nitro-chromane derivatives has been developed. An efficient strategy for the kinetic resolution of racemic 2-aryl-3-nitro-2H-chromenes was also successfully achieved. This catalytic kinetic resolution method allows the synthetically valuable chiral scaffolds, chromane and 2H-chromene, to be accessed in a single catalytic and asymmetric transformation, through the NHC-bound azolium homoenolate pathway.

This operationally simple protocol allows rapid access to synthetically useful coumarins on gram scale by employing CeCl3 as a photocatalyst and O-2 as a terminal oxidant. Tea is an important beverage source of dietary polyphenols and well known for containing phenolic structure diversity. A series of phenylpropanoid-substituted catechins, flavonols, flavan-3-hexoside, and proanthocyanidin are present in different herbs with various biological activities, inspiring our exploration of phenylpropanoid-substituted ester type of catechins (PSECs) due to the enrichment of galloylated catechins in tea. In this study, we used a guiding-screening-location-isolation integrated route including creating a hypothesized PSEC dataset, MS/MS data acquiring, construction of molecular networks, and traditional column chromatography and preliminarily identified 14 PSECs by MS/MS spectrum. Two of these PSECs were further purified and elucidated by NMR and CD spectra. Further MS detection in tea products and fresh leaves suggests that the production of the two new compounds was enhanced during tea processing. The synthesis mechanism was proposed to obtain these types of components for further investigation on their roles in human health protection. This study provides an example for the exploration of new functional ingredients from food sources guided by MS/MS data-based networking, and also new insights into the reaction mechanism to form new catechin conjugates among polyphenols in green tea.

Nano-ferrite-supported Cu nanoparticles (Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs) catalyzed anti-Markovnikov-selective hydroboration of alkenes with B(2)pin(2) is reported under mild reaction conditions. This protocol can be applied to a broad range of substrates with high functional group compatibility. In addition, we demonstrated the use of Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs as a catalyst for the beta-borylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and ester, providing alkylboronate esters in up to 98% yield. Reuse of the magnetically recyclable catalyst resulted in no significant loss of activity in up to five reaction runs for both systems.

In contrast to the plethora of large-bite-angle bisphosphine ligands available to transition-metal catalysis, the development of small-bite-angle bisphosphine ligands has suffered from the limited structural variations accessible on their single-atom-containing backbones. Herein, we report the design and applications of a discrete very small bite-angle bisphosphine ligand, namely, FMPhos. Featuring a fluorene-methylene unit appended on the single-carbon linker, the ligand harbors an unusually rigid backbone that presumably stabilizes its complexation with transition metals during catalysis. Compared with the known dppm ligand, it exhibited superior reactivity and regioselectivity in a number of alkene hydrofunctionalization reactions, catalyzed by iridium and rhodium.
