A method for the semi-reduction of alkynoic acids through an alpha-borylation and subsequent protodeborylation mechanism has been developed. The transition metal-free protocol is achieved through the activation of bis(pinacolato)diboron by an in situ generated carboxylate moiety yielding aryl acrylic acids. Our studies demonstrate an unprecedented dual role for the carboxylate anion that involves the activation of the diboron reagent and a directing effect in the alpha-borylation. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Regioselectivity for intramolecular Diels-Alder (IMDA) reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones that were formed by oxidation of 2-alkenylphenols with lead tetraacetate in acetic acid were studied. Bridged regioselectivity was observed in the IMDA reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones having a dienophile part which could conjugate with an aromatic group. Bridged seven-and eight-membered rings and bicyclo[2.2.2]octane skeletons were constructed by the present IMDA reactions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that conjugation of the dienophile with neighboring aromatic groups lowered the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gap and preceded bridged [4 + 2] adducts.

The presence of different aldehydes is found to have a significant influence on the catalytic performance when using PN(H)P type ligands for dehydrogenation of alcohols. Accordingly, hybrid multi-dentate ligands were discovered based on an oxygen-transfer alkylation of PNP ligands by aldehydes. The relevant Ru-PNN(PO) system provided the desired unsymmetrical esters in good yields via acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols. Hydrogen bonding interactions between the phosphine oxide moieties and alcohol substrates likely assisted the observed high chemoselectivity.

Vicinal dibromides and dichlorides are important commodity chemicals and indispensable synthetic intermediates in modern chemistry that are traditionally synthesized using hazardous elemental chlorine and bromine. Meanwhile, the environmental persistence of halogenated pollutants necessitates improved approaches to accelerate their remediation. Here, we introduce an electrochemically assisted shuttle (e-shuttle) paradigm for the facile and scalable interconversion of alkenes and vicinal dihalides, a class of reactions that can be used both to synthesize useful dihalogenated molecules from simple alkenes and to recycle waste material through retro-dihalogenation. The reaction is demonstrated using 1,2-dibromoethane, as well as 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane or 1,2-dichloroethane, to dibrominate or dichlorinate, respectively, a wide range of alkenes in a simple setup with inexpensive graphite electrodes. Conversely, the hexachlorinated persistent pollutant lindane could be fully dechlorinated to benzene in soil samples using simple alkene acceptors.

A performance test in a variety of benchmark reactions including sulfoxidations and phenol dearomatizations revealed a bis-N-bound pyrazole substituted BNHI as the most reactive derivative. Frequent use of synthetic larvicides has led to the development of resistance in many species of mosquitoes as well as risk of environmental pollution. Recently, encapsulating essential oils (EOs) in surfactants or polymers is being employed as an approach to control the volatility of EOs as green larvicides. In this research, components of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) essential oil were identified by GC-MS analysis. Fortyeight components were identified, with 5 major components including estragole (67.623%), cis-Ocimene (8.691%), beta-Ocimene Y (7.577%), Limonene (4.338%) and 3-Methoxy cinnam aldehyde (1.49%). Tarragon EO was encapsulated in chitosan nanocapsules using ionic gelation method and confirmed by FT-IR analysis. Encapsulation efficiency and size of the chitosan nanocapsules were determined 34.91 +/- 2% and 203 +/- 16 nm, respectively. For the first time, a long-lasting green larvicide was reported which remained active for 10 days, against Anopheles stephensi. Furthermore, cytotoxicity of the nanoformulation was found to be similar to that of temephos on human skin normal cells (HFFF2). This nanoformulation can be a good alternative for synthetic larvicides due to its long-lasting activity, proper effectiveness and also its green constituents.

Combined water pollution with the coexistence of heavy metals and organic contaminants is of great concern for practical wastewater treatment. In this study, a jaboticaba-like nanocomposite, titanate nanotubes supported TiO2 (TiO2/TiNTs), was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal treatment. TiO2 /TiNTs had large surface area, abundant of -ONa/H groups and fine crystal anatase phase, thus exhibited both good adsorptive performance for Cu(II) and high photocatalytic activity for phenanthrene degradation. The maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity on TiO2/TiNTs was 115.0 mg/g at pH 5 according to Langmuir isotherm model, and > 95% of phenanthrene was degraded within 4 h under UV light. TiO2/TiNTs showed about 10 times higher observed rate constant (k(obs) ) for phenanthrene degradation compared to the unmodified TiNTs. More importantly, the coexistence of Cu(II) promoted photocatalytic degradation of phenanthrene, because the incorporated Cu(II) in the lattice of TiNTs could trap photo-excited electron and thus inhibited the electron-hole recombination. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicated that the sites of phenanthrene with high Fukui index (f(0)) preferred to be attacked by center dot OH radicals. The quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis revealed that the degradation intermediates had lower acute toxicity and mutagenicity than phenanthrene. TiO2/TiNTs also owned high stability, as only slight loss of Cu(II) and phenanthrene removal efficiency was observed even after four reuse cycles. The developed material in this study is of great application potential for water or wastewater treatment with multi-contaminants, and this work can help us to better understand the mechanisms on reaction between Ti-based nanomaterials and different kinds of contaminants.

A visible light mediated oxidative lactonization of 2-methyl-1,1′-biaryls was developed, giving benzocoumarins in good yields. The reaction features multiple C-H functionalization processes with oxygen as the final oxidant. The corresponding 2-aldehdyes, alcohols and carboxylic acids of the 1,1′-biaryls also worked well for the reaction.
