Catalytic hydrogenation of olefins using noble metal catalysts or pyrophoric RANEY (R) nickel is of high importance in the chemical industry. From the point of view of green and sustainable chemistry, design and development of Earth-abundant, less toxic, and more environmentally friendly catalysts are highly desirable. Herein, we report the convenient preparation of active cobalt catalysts and their application in hydrogenations of a wide range of terminal and internal carbon-carbon double bonds in water under mild conditions. Catalysts are prepared on multi-gram scale by pyrolysis of cobalt acetate and uracil, guanine, adenine or l-tryptophan. The most active material Co-Ura/C-600 showed good productivity in industrially relevant hydrogenation of diisobutene to isooctane and in natural oil hardening.

Static supercritical fluid extraction has been used to concentrate the aroma materials of common herbs and spices. The technique has provided a higher number of components and cleaner extract than the one-step ethanol maceration. The one-step supercritical fluid extraction of the aroma compounds has been combined with their in situ adsorption in hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica aerogels. The extracts have been analyzed by a GC-MS technique and 55 aroma compounds have been identified. Most of the compounds have been adsorbed in both polar and apolar silica aerogels with no direct connection with the surface polarity. However, previously undetected compounds enriched to an analytically significant level, while others competed with each other for the active sites on the surface. Functionalized silica aerogels can be used as a new type of aroma storage materials and as selective and tuneable adsorbents for the extraction and enrichment of potentially active components from a complex matrix.

A highly active and recyclable Pd-deposited catalyst has been successfully prepared for the Heck reaction. Bio-oil liquid, a byproduct from the microwave pyrolysis of wastepaper, is employed to immobilize palladium nanoparticles on a solid support. FTIR, GC, and NMR results indicate the self-polymerization feature of bio-oil, thus giving rise to a uniform carbonaceous layer coated around the surface of the catalyst. Characteristic analysis of the catalyst indicates that palladium nanoparticles are well-dispersed on the parent SBA-15 solid substrate, which is attributed to the carbonaceous layer that is derived from bio-oil carbonization, allowing a high catalytic performance as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck reaction. The as-synthesized catalyst demonstrates remarkable recyclability with firm deposition of palladium nanoparticles on the solid support and could be reused without a activity. dramatic decrease in catalytic activity.

A novel, biodegradable and environmental friendly magnetic cross-linked chitosan fibers and its cobalt complex was prepared and characterized by various techniques such as FT-IR, SEM, EDX, Elemental mapping, TEM, TGA, XRD and VSM analysis. This palladium and phosphine-free catalyst was found as a highly active heterogeneous catalyst for Heck and Sonogashira reactions in green media. The catalyst was easily separated using an external magnet and the recovered catalyst was reused for six cycles without significant loss of catalytic activity.

We report herein cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective and chemodivergent reactions between a cyclopropanol and an oxabicyclic alkene via a cobalt homoenolate, which afford either an alkylative ring-opening product or a hydroalkylation product, with the counterion of the cobalt catalyst being a major chemoselectivity-controlling factor. A catalyst generated from cobalt(II) chloride and a chiral diphosphine promotes alkylative ring opening to afford 1,2-dihydronaphthalen-1-ol derivatives in good yields with high enantioselectivity. By contrast, a catalyst generated from cobalt(II) acetate and the same diphosphine ligand, with the assistance of methanol, selectively affords hydroalkylation products with retention of the bicyclic structure at a comparable level of enantioselectivity.

This report describes the synthesis of five new colorful 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts, a largely unexplored structural unit. These rare compounds are benzannulated structural derivatives of the well-known flavylium cations found widespread in natural pigments. These new dyes are directly compared to three previously synthesized 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts as well as eight colorful isomeric 9-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation, or 9-arylxanthylium, salts. The 9-arylxanthylium unit is commonly found in the biologically important rhodamine and rosamine dyes, yet six of the analogs presented in this study were either previously unreported or not isolated. The visual and spectroscopic properties of all 16 compounds were analyzed as a function of the structural differences between the compounds. All compounds displayed reversible halochromism in organic solution, displaying bright colors under acidic conditions and becoming colorless under basic conditions. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. By using 2-fluoro-substituted diaryliodonium salts, a novel benzocylization has been accomplished for the synthesis of 3,4-benzocoumarin derivatives via a cascade of ortho-arylation and defluorination in the presence of palladium catalysts. The reaction exhibits a broad compatibility of readily available aromatic acids with an excellent level of site-selectivity. Mechanistic investigations revealed a unique reactivity of carboxylic acid directed arylation by followed nucleophilic substitution of aromatic fluoride in the present system.
