Beyond the tandem oxa-Michael strategy, an N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed kinetic resolution approach to access highly diastereo- and enantioenriched 2-aryl-3-nitro-chromane derivatives has been developed. An efficient strategy for the kinetic resolution of racemic 2-aryl-3-nitro-2H-chromenes was also successfully achieved. This catalytic kinetic resolution method allows the synthetically valuable chiral scaffolds, chromane and 2H-chromene, to be accessed in a single catalytic and asymmetric transformation, through the NHC-bound azolium homoenolate pathway.

The purpose of this study was to inspect the suitability of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicumL.) for phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated areas in urban areas of Egypt through study the impact of the most common pollutants in Egypt: cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) on morphological traits, and essential oil (EOs) content of sweet basil. The experiment was done under greenhouse conditions. The applied treatments tested in this experiment for Cd concentrations were 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ppm and for Pb: 100, 350, 750, 1,000, 1,500 ppm. The composition and amount of EOs had been determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that the contaminated soil had a negative impact on morphological traits development of basil (e.g., the decline in fresh and dry weight). The increase in Cd and Pb concentrations enhanced the EOs yield of sweet basil. In general, basil cultivation in the Cd and Pb contaminated soils could cause undesirable impacts on morphological traits; however, the presence of these metals has a major influence on the EOs yield, composition, and phytoremediation of the soil.

Selaginella P. Beauv. is a group of vascular plants in the family Selaginellaceae Willk., found worldwide and numbering more than 700 species, with some used as foods and medicines. The aim of this paper was to compare methanolic (MeOH) and dichloromethane (DCM) extracts of eight Selaginella species on the basis of their composition and biological activities. Six of these Selaginella species are underinvestigated. Using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) analysis, we identified a total of 193 compounds among the tested Selaginella species, with flavonoids predominating. MeOH extracts recovered more constituents that were detected, including selaginellins, the occurrence of which is only typical for this plant genus. Of all the tested species, Selaginella apoda contained the highest number of identified selaginellins. The majority of the compounds were identified in S. apoda, the fewest compounds in Selaginella cupressina. All the tested species demonstrated antioxidant activity using oxygen radical absorption capacity (ORAC) assay, which showed that MeOH extracts had higher antioxidant capacity, with the half maximal effective concentration (EC50) ranging from 12 +/- 1 (Selaginella myosuroides) to 124 +/- 2 (Selaginella cupressina) mg/L. The antioxidant capacity was presumed to be correlated with the content of flavonoids, (neo)lignans, and selaginellins. Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was mostly discerned in DCM extracts and was only exhibited in S. myosuroides, S. cupressina, Selaginella biformis, and S. apoda extracts with the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) in the range of 19 +/- 3 to 62 +/- 1 mg/L. Substantial cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines was demonstrated by the MeOH extract of S. apoda, where the ratio of the IC50 HEK (human embryonic kidney) to IC50 HepG2 (hepatocellular carcinoma) was 7.9 +/- 0.2. MeOH extracts inhibited the production of nitrate oxide and cytokines in a dose-dependent manner. Notably, S. biformis halved the production of NO, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and interleukin (IL)-6 at the following concentrations: 105 +/- 9, 11 +/- 1, and 10 +/- 1 mg/L, respectively. Our data confirmed that extracts from Selaginella species exhibited cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines and AChE inhibition. The activity observed in S. apoda was the most promising and is worth further exploration.

The implementation of machine learning models has brought major changes in the decision-making process for materials design. One matter of concern for the data-driven approaches is the lack of negative data from unsuccessful synthetic attempts, which might generate inherently imbalanced datasets. We propose the application of the one-class classification methodology as an effective tool for tackling these limitations on the materials design problems. This is a concept of learning based only on a well-defined class without counter examples. An extensive study on the different one-class classification algorithms is performed until the most appropriate workflow is identified for guiding the discovery of emerging materials belonging to a relatively small class, that being the weakly bound polyaromatic hydrocarbon co-crystals. The two-step approach presented in this study first trains the model using all the known molecular combinations that form this class of co-crystals extracted from the Cambridge Structural Database (1722 molecular combinations), followed by scoring possible yet unknown pairs from the ZINC15 database (21 736 possible molecular combinations). Focusing on the highest-ranking pairs predicted to have higher probability of forming co-crystals, materials discovery can be accelerated by reducing the vast molecular space and directing the synthetic efforts of chemists. Further on, using interpretability techniques a more detailed understanding of the molecular properties causing co-crystallization is sought after. The applicability of the current methodology is demonstrated with the discovery of two novel co-crystals, namely pyrene-6H-benzo[c]chromen-6-one (1) and pyrene-9,10-dicyanoanthracene (2).

Useful alpha-boryl esters can be synthesized in one step from alpha,beta-unsaturated esters using just a simple to access NHC-BH3 (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) and catalytic I-2. The scope of this reductive alpha-borylation methodology is excellent and includes a range of alkyl, aryl substituted and cyclic and acyclic alpha,beta-unsaturated esters. Mechanistic studies involving reductive borylation of a cyclic alpha,beta-unsaturated ester with NHC-BD3/I-2 indicated that concerted hydroboration of the alkene moiety in the alpha,beta-unsaturated ester proceeds instead of a stepwise process involving initial 1,4-hydroboration; this is in contrast to the recently reported reductive alpha-silylation. The BH2(NHC) unit can be transformed into electrophilic BX2(NHC) moieties (X = halide) and the ester moiety can be reduced to the alcohol with the borane unit remaining intact to form b-boryl alcohols. The use of a chiral auxiliary, 8-phenylmenthyl ester, also enables effective stereo-control of the newly formed C-B bond. Combined two step ester reduction/borane oxidation forms diols, including excellent e. e. (97%) for the formation of S-3-phenylpropane-1,2-diol. This work represents a simple transition metal free route to form bench stable alpha-boryl esters from inexpensive starting materials.

The idea of using biaryl structures to generate synthetic building blocks such as spirolactones is attractive because biaryl structures are abundant in biomass waste streams. However, the inertness of aromatic rings of biaryls makes it challenging to transform them into functionalized structures. In this work, we developed photoinduced dearomatization of nonphenolic biaryl compounds to generate spirolactones. We demonstrate that dearomatization can be performed via either aerobic photocatalysis or anaerobic photooxidation to tolerate specific synthetic conditions. In both pathways, dearomatization is induced by electrophilic attack of the carboxyl radical. The resulting spirodiene radical is captured by either oxygen or water in aerobic and anaerobic systems, respectively, to generate the spirodienone. These methods represent novel routes to synthesize spirolactones from the biaryl motif.

Buckwheat was processed by solid-state fermentation (SSF) with the probiotic fungal strain Eurotium cristatum YL-1. The effects of SSF on the phytochemical content, as well as the antioxidant and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activities, on buckwheat were revealed. Metabolite differences between non-fermented buckwheat (BW) and E. cristatum fermented buckwheat (FBW) were investigated by LC-MS/MS-based untargeted metabolomics. Results showed that 103 and 68 metabolites remarkably differed between BW and FBW in positive and negative ionization modes, respectively. Most phenolic compounds and alkaloids were significantly up-regulated during SSF. Hydrolytic enzymes (i.e., beta-glucosidase, alpha-amylase, protease, and cellulase) were produced by the filamentous fungus E. cristatum during SSF. In vitro spectrophotometric assays demonstrated that the total phenolics content, ferric reducing antioxidant power, reducing power, scavenging activities of DPPH radical and ABTS center dot+, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity of buckwheat were considerably enhanced after processing by SSF with E. cristatum. Additionally, solvents with different polarities significantly influenced the antioxidant and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activities of buckwheat extracts. Our study indicated that processing by SSF with E. cristatum can greatly improve the phytochemical components of buckwheat and consequently contribute to its antioxidant and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activities. SSF with E. cristatum is an innovative method for enhancing the health-promoting components and bioactivities of buckwheat.

4-Ethyltoluene is a very valuable chemical that is currently produced from fossil feedstocks. Production of 4-ethyltoluene from renewable and cheap lignin is of great significance. Herein, we report a new route to produce 4-ethyltoluene from lignin. It was discovered that RhCl3-LiI-LiBF4 was an efficient catalytic system for the reaction of lignin with CO to form 4-ethyltoluene. In the reaction, ethylbenzene was first formed via demethoxylation and depolymerization of lignin, which was further transformed into 4-ethyltoluene by methylation using methoxy from the lignin. The yield of 4-ethyltoluene could reach 9.5 wt% when GVL-lignin was used as the starting material. Interestingly, 5.2 wt% yield of 4-ethyltoluene was obtained when raw poplar was directly used as the starting material. As far as we know, the transformation of lignin with 4-ethyltoluene as the major product has not been reported. This work provides a new strategy to produce valuable aromatic compounds from renewable resources.
