Treatment of 2-arylbenzoic acids with N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) and NaI at 70 degrees C under fluorescent lighting condition gave the corresponding 3,4-benzocoumarins in good yields under transition-metal-free condition. It was found that the reactivity of NCS with NaI for the formation of 3,4-benzocoumarins from 2-arylbenzoic acids was as high as that with NIS. Thus, the formation of carboxyl radicals and their cyclization onto an aromatic ring from 2-arylbenzoic acids with much less expensive NCS and NaI, than NIS could be successfully carried out to form 3,4-benzocoumarins.

The aroma-retention capacity of functional whey protein aggregates (WPA) was compared to that of native whey protein isolate (WPI) in aqueous solutions and in fat-free yogurts. The retention of aroma compounds, constituting a model strawberry aroma, was evaluated by calculating gas-matrix partition coefficients using head-space gas chromatography (HS-GC). The retention capacity of WPA differed from the one of WPI for three out of seven aroma compounds detected in HS-GC. Incorporating WPA in fat-free yogurts tended to decrease the release of hydrophobic aroma compounds such as 2-nonanone or methyl-cinnamate. The magnitude of the differences between the partition coefficients of yogurts enriched in WPI or WPA was lower than in aqueous solutions, which is likely to be due to the higher complexity of the food matrix and potential interactions with other ingredients. Overall, the different aroma-retention capacities of native WPI and functional WPA are likely to lead to unbalanced aroma, especially in fat-free dairy products.

The idea of using biaryl structures to generate synthetic building blocks such as spirolactones is attractive because biaryl structures are abundant in biomass waste streams. However, the inertness of aromatic rings of biaryls makes it challenging to transform them into functionalized structures. In this work, we developed photoinduced dearomatization of nonphenolic biaryl compounds to generate spirolactones. We demonstrate that dearomatization can be performed via either aerobic photocatalysis or anaerobic photooxidation to tolerate specific synthetic conditions. In both pathways, dearomatization is induced by electrophilic attack of the carboxyl radical. The resulting spirodiene radical is captured by either oxygen or water in aerobic and anaerobic systems, respectively, to generate the spirodienone. These methods represent novel routes to synthesize spirolactones from the biaryl motif.

The American Matsutake, Tricholoma magnivelare (Peck) Redhead, is an edible wild mushroom with a distinctive aroma described as mushroom and spice with subtle floral and citrus nuances. In this study, a total of 36 odorants were identified from T. magnivelare using solvent-assisted flavor evaporation and aroma extract dilution analysis. Stable isotope dilution assays were performed to quantitate 14 odorants with flavor dilution factors >= 64. Odorants with high odor activity values (OAVs) included 1-octen-3-one (OAV 2125), linalool (OAV 650), (2E,4E)-nona-2,4-dienal (OAV 304), and 1-octen-3-ol (OAV 206). An odor simulation model matched the odor profile of the fresh mushroom. Omission studies showed that linalool, hexanal, (2E,4E)-nona2,4-dienal, methyl (E)-3-phenylprop-2-enoate, and 1-octen-3-one or 1-octen-3-ol were essential to the aroma of T. magnivelare. Chiral chromatography showed that a-pinene was a scalemic mixture of 34% (R)-(+) to 66% (S)-(-), while 1-octen-3-ol was present as 95% (R)-(-) to 5% (S)-(+), and linalool was 96% (R)-(-) to 4% (S)-(+). These results establish the base for future investigations into the aroma chemistry of other members of the genus Tricholoma.

Background: Predictors of hospitalisation in people with HIV (PLHIV) in the contemporary treatment era are not well understood. Methods: This ASTRA sub-study used clinic data linkage and record review to determine occurrence of hospitalisations among 798 PLHIV from baseline questionnaire (February to December 2011) until 1 June 2018. Associations of baseline social circumstance, socioeconomic, lifestyle, mental health, demographic and clinical factors with repeated all-cause hospitalisation from longitudinal data were investigated using Prentice-Williams-Peterson models. Associations were also assessed in 461 individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART) with viral load <= 50 copies/ml and CD4 count >= 500 cells/ mu l. Findings: Rate of hospitalisation was 5.8/100 person-years (95% CI: 5.1-6.5). Polyaniline coated on particles of celite is used as support to load palladium catalyst. This heterogenized Celite center dot PANI center dot Pd system, is used as an efficient catalyst for chemoselective hydrogenation reactions. The catalyst is characterized by usual spectral, analytical techniques and studied for hydrogenation reactions at ambient conditions. The mild reaction conditions allow the control over the reactions and excellent selectivity is achieved in number of conversions. Hydrogenation of a carbon-carbon double bond was favored over other polar pi-bond systems, while labile functional groups such as benzyl ether, benzyl esters, cyano, nitro and halogen remained unaffected. Primary amines were converted to N,N-dimethyl amines with formaldehyde, the double bond of coumarin was selectively hydrogenated without opening of the lactone functionality.
