Zakeri, Setareh published the artcileFabrication of self-supporting structures made of washcoat materials (γ-Al2O3-CeO2) by ceramic stereolithography: Towards digital manufacturing of enhanced catalytic converters, Formula: C11H15NO2, the publication is Materials & Design (2021), 110115, database is CAplus.

Despite increasing interest in the use of alternative fuel, conventional diesel or gasoline powered vehicles still dominate road transportation; removal of their emitted pollutants is a challenge to sustainable transportation. The automotive industry has employed catalytic converters (CCs) to effectively modify or eliminate toxic pollutants emitted by combustion engines. The efficiency of a CC greatly depends on its geometry and is hindered by limitations in fabrication techniques. To go beyond these limits and further enhance the performance of CCs, one can use state-of-the-art ceramic stereolithog. (CSL) technol., which enables fabrication of complex-shaped structures. In this work, a novel photocurable ceramic resin made of γ-Al2O3 and CeO2 (the commonly used washcoat materials in CCs) is shaped into the honeycomb and twisted honeycomb structures using CSL. Measurements reveal that upon the addition of CeO2 to the plain γ-Al2O3 resin, the penetration depth of light is significantly decreased from 408.06μm to 75.19μm. This research also focuses on the balance between having a high surface area and achieving good phys. stability in the printed structures. Accordingly, the appropriately debinded structures are sintered at two different temperatures: 900°C and 1100°C. It is found that the structure sintered at 900°C has a higher surface area, and thus, it is a better candidate for catalytic applications. Furthermore, investigation of the stabilizing effect of CeO2 on printed γ-Al2O3 finds that CeO2 is effective in stabilizing the printed γ-Al2O3 at1100°C but not 900°C. Targeting the realization of green and sustainable transportation, the applied CSL technique in this study enables flexible control in the design and fabrication of self-supporting structures that are expected to open promising ways for the optimization of CCs.

Brucellosis is one of the most widespread bacterial zoonoses worldwide. Here, our aim was to identify the effector mechanisms controlling the early stages of intranasal infection with Brucella in C57BL/6 mice. During the first 48 h of infection, alveolar macrophages (AMs) are the main cells infected in the lungs. Using RNA sequencing, we identified the aconitate decarboxylase 1 gene (Acod1; also known as Immune responsive gene 1), as one of the genes most upregulated in murine AMs in response to B. melitensis infection at 24 h post-infection. Upregulation of Acod1 was confirmed by RT-qPCR in lungs infected with B. melitensis and B. abortus. We observed that Acod1-/- C57BL/6 mice display a higher bacterial load in their lungs than wild-type (wt) mice following B. melitensis or B. abortus infection, demonstrating that Acod1 participates in the control of pulmonary Brucella infection. The ACOD1 enzyme is mostly produced in mitochondria of macrophages, and converts cis-aconitate, a metabolite in the Krebs cycle, into itaconate. Di-Me itaconate (DMI), a chem.-modified membrane permeable form of itaconate, has a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on Brucella growth in vitro. Interestingly, structural anal. suggests the binding of itaconate into the binding site of B. abortus isocitrate lyase. DMI does not inhibit multiplication of the isocitrate lyase deletion mutant ΔaceA B. abortus in vitro. Finally, we observed that, unlike the wt strain, the ΔaceA B. abortus strain multiplies similarly in wt and Acod1-/- C57BL/6 mice. These data suggest that bacterial isocitrate lyase might be a target of itaconate in AMs.

Antitumor and antiviral activities of various aroma samples, including cinnamic acid, β-caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, nerolidol (synthetic and natural samples), trans,trans-farnesol, farnesol (isomeric mixture), longifolene, geranic acid and a farnesol-rich ylang-fraction were investigated using HeLa and Jurkat cell lines. Using a CytoTox-96-Assay we observed strong antitumor effects of natural- and synthetic nerolidol-samples at concentrations less than 5 μM. Furthermore, synthetic nerolidol reduced the number of HeLa and Jurkat cells to 50% (CC50) at concentrations which were more than ten times lower compared with the EDs required to achieve 50% cytotoxicity (ED50). Antiviral studies were performed to investigate inhibitory effects of the compounds on mouse polyomavirus propagation in 3T6 cells. Remarkable inhibition of viral activity was demonstrated by synthetic nerolidol at CC50 3.2±1.5 μM and natural nerolidol at CC50 1.2±0.4 μM All other compounds, however, did not show any inhibition against this virus.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the incorporation effect of biomimetic hydroxyapatite (BHA) particles on the mech. properties of exptl. dental composites. Two exptl. composites were produced from the same organic matrix, Si/Zr nanocluster, and SiO2/silane as main inorganic reinforcing fillers. 7wt% BHA was added to one of the groups to evaluate its effect on mech. properties. The BHA was also modified with 3-MPTMS to improve chem. bonding. Chem. structures and phys. properties of the fillers were identified by XRD, FTIR, XPS, TGA, SEM, BET, and Zeta-Sizer. According to ISO 4049 and DIN 50,133 the mech. properties, and to ISO 10993-5:2009 the biocompatibility was investigated. Anal. of variance (ANOVA) was used for the statistical anal. of acquired data. The BHA was synthesized by the biomimetic method in simulated body media (SBF). The SEM images of BHA/Silane particles demonstrated rod-like shapes and similar dimensions with natural hydroxyapatite present in tooth enamel. The modification by using 3-MPTMS was decreased the mean particle size of the fillers due to a lower agglomeration tendency. Moreover, the addition of small mass fractions of the BHA into the dental resins can substantially meet the ISO 4049 requirements. Consequently, the BHA was not adversely decreasing the mech. properties of the dental composites. Also, the biocompatibility of the BHA-containing composites was found better than the samples without BHA-containing composites. The incorporation of the BHA can meet the mech. requirements of dental resins and composites. Addnl., it may show regenerative properties against small lesions.

Chem. hazardous substances in teethers may migrate into infant’s body through oral exposure, resulting in a potential health risk. In recent years, researchers have performed a series of studies for detecting target chems. in teethers and other toys, but the presence of unknown chems. has not been systematically investigated yet. This paper reports the non-targeted identification of unknown chem. hazards that may have migrated from teethers to infants based on gas chromatog.-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry. In view of the difficulties that may be encountered in the qual. anal. of substances, several typical cases and the corresponding reliable solutions are given from the perspective of comprehensive score and retention index, isotope-aided qual. anal., chem. ionization identification formula, and fragment ion detail comparison for distinguishing isomers. Finally, 28 substances are identified in 10 teether samples. Among them, phenol, N-methylaniline, 1,6-dioxacyclododecane-7,12-dione and cyclohexanone have higher detection rates. This study not only has valuable reference for the identification of unknown substances, but also has pos. guiding role in monitoring potential chem. hazards in toys and promoting the safety of products.

The 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid intercalated in Mg2Al/layered double hydroxide has been used as a filler in biopolyesters containing the succinate moiety, such as poly(propylene succinate) (PPS), poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene adipate) (PBSA) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), with the aim of inducing an effect similar to that of an increment of the mol. weight of the matrixes. The composites (1, 5 and 10 weight% of filler) have been prepared by a simple melt blending procedure. X-ray diffraction anal. revealed the presence of intercalated structures in the composites. From melt rheol. measurements, a chain extender effect of the filler, towards PBS, PPS and to some extent PBSA, was evident and proportional to the composition, producing a reinforcing role of the filler towards the polymeric chains. Moreover, no gel-like structure was produced. Such findings can be useful in widening the processing window of biopolyesters, in order to design multifunctional materials with adapted properties.

It has been known that the yield of lignin monomers during lignin depolymerization is limited by the irreversible condensations of lignin in the fractionation and/or depolymerization process. In this study, we report a new oxidative catalytic fractionation (OCF) process with a simple and effective one-pot but two-step approach to depolymerize lignin to lignin-derived chems. (LDCs) using polyoxometalate (POM) as the only catalyst. First, the POM effectively catalyzed the methoxylation of the active α-OH groups of lignin in a methanol and water mixture at low temperature (100°C), and 96% of the stabilized lignin in the lignocellulose sawdust was extracted to the solution simultaneously. Then the lignin solution was heated to an elevated temperature (140°C) in the same solvent. As a result, 74.0 weight % of the lignin (based on the weight of the Klason lignin in the wood) was converted to LDCs, including 45.9 weight % aromatic monomers.

The phase change materials (PCMs) are latent thermal energy storage materials to store and release energy in the form of latent heat with a change in internal energy. The microencapsulation technique overcomes the limitations faced by the PCMs during energy storage and release. In this study, the new ester-based non-paraffin PCM was microencapsulated into an organic shell using in-situ polymerization technique. The as-prepared MPCMs was characterised using the field emission electron microscope (FESEM), fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric anal. (TGA) techniques. The results show that the MPCM characterised using FESEM has exhibited a good morphol. The chem. stability studies carried using FTIR spectroscopy also confirmed the formation of microcapsules was only by phys. interaction. The DSC test results also signify that microcapsules have a latent heat of enthalpy of 65.32 kJ/kg, with onset melting temperature of 8.57°C. Thus, this ensures the MPCM to be considered as a potential candidate for the CTES application.
