A manganese-catalyzed oxidative kinetic resolution of cyclic benzylic ethers through asymmetric C(sp(3))-H oxidation is reported. The practical approach is applicable to a wide range of 1,3-dihydroisobenzofurans bearing diverse functional groups and substituent patterns at the alpha position with extremely efficient enantiodiscrimination. The generality of the strategy was further demonstrated by efficient oxidative kinetic resolution of another type of five-membered cyclic benzylic ether, 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans, and six-membered 6H-benzo[c]chromenes. Direct late-stage oxidative kinetic resolution of bioactive molecules that are otherwise difficult to access was further explored.

Vicinal dibromides and dichlorides are important commodity chemicals and indispensable synthetic intermediates in modern chemistry that are traditionally synthesized using hazardous elemental chlorine and bromine. Meanwhile, the environmental persistence of halogenated pollutants necessitates improved approaches to accelerate their remediation. Here, we introduce an electrochemically assisted shuttle (e-shuttle) paradigm for the facile and scalable interconversion of alkenes and vicinal dihalides, a class of reactions that can be used both to synthesize useful dihalogenated molecules from simple alkenes and to recycle waste material through retro-dihalogenation. The reaction is demonstrated using 1,2-dibromoethane, as well as 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane or 1,2-dichloroethane, to dibrominate or dichlorinate, respectively, a wide range of alkenes in a simple setup with inexpensive graphite electrodes. Conversely, the hexachlorinated persistent pollutant lindane could be fully dechlorinated to benzene in soil samples using simple alkene acceptors.

A biocompatible hybrid system composed of graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS) and ionic liquid decorated cyclodextrin nanosponge (CDNS-IL) is synthesized and applied for the immobilization of Pd and Fe3O4 nanoparticles to furnish a magnetic catalyst, Fe3O4/Pd@Hybrid. The justification for designing this hybrid system was benefiting from the capability of CDNS for formation of inclusion complex with substrates and acting as phase transfer agent. Moreover, IL itself could exert catalytic activity and improve anchoring Pd, while magnetic nano particles could render the catalyst easily separable. Moreover, the functional groups on CS could contribute to Pd anchoring. The catalytic activity of Fe3O4/Pd@Hybrid for promoting hydrogenation of nitro arenes and two coupling reactions in aqueous media was investigated. The results established that the catalyst could efficiently promote all the reactions under mild reaction condition. This report describes the synthesis of five new colorful 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts, a largely unexplored structural unit. These rare compounds are benzannulated structural derivatives of the well-known flavylium cations found widespread in natural pigments. These new dyes are directly compared to three previously synthesized 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts as well as eight colorful isomeric 9-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation, or 9-arylxanthylium, salts. The 9-arylxanthylium unit is commonly found in the biologically important rhodamine and rosamine dyes, yet six of the analogs presented in this study were either previously unreported or not isolated. The visual and spectroscopic properties of all 16 compounds were analyzed as a function of the structural differences between the compounds. All compounds displayed reversible halochromism in organic solution, displaying bright colors under acidic conditions and becoming colorless under basic conditions. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Development of a facile and greener approach for Heck reaction using a modified PAN supported palladium catalyst is described. The preparation of the catalyst involves a simple process through amidoxime modification of nitrile group in Polyacrylonitrile (PAN), followed by the complexation with Palladium chloride (PdCl2). The resulting supported catalyst was characterized by spectroscopic analyses and further by computational studies. This polymer supported Palladium complex displayed excellent catalytic activity in Heck coupling reaction of a series of activated alkenes and aryl halides and afforded the corresponding coupling products upto 96% isolated yield. After the reaction, the catalyst was easily recovered by simple filtration and recycled with excellent stability and activity even after 5 runs. This is the first report on the use of amidoxime functionalized PAN-Palladium (II) complex as a heterogeneous catalyst in Heck coupling reaction.

By employing an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst, we developed a versatile catalytic system that enables deaminative cross-coupling reactions of aldehydes with redox-active pyridinium salts. Katritzky pyridinium salts behave as single-electron oxidants capable of generating alkyl radicals enabled by the redox properties of the enolate form of Breslow intermediates. The resultant alkyl radical undergoes efficient recombination with the NHC-bound aldehyde-derived carbonyl carbon radical for the formation of a C-C bond. The mild and transition metal-free reaction conditions tolerate a broad range of functional groups, and its utility has been further demonstrated by the modification of a series of peptide feedstocks and application to the three-component dicarbofunctionalization of olefins.

A simple and an efficient approach for in situ preparation of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) in ionic liquid crystal (ILC) microemulsion is described. Microemulsion was formed by using a ternary mixture of triton X-100/ILC/water (in the ratio of 1.4:0.1:8.5). Three such microemulsions-1, 2 and 3 were formed by using three different ILCs namely ammonium ILC containing a cholesterol core (ILC-1), imidazolium ILC bearing a cholesterol core (ILC-2) and imidazolium ILC containing a biphenyl core (ILC-3), respectively. The Pd NPs were characterised using UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. Among the three, microemulsion-2 which was prepared using ILC-2 yielded stable NPs with an average particle size of similar to 20 nm. The NPs prepared in all three emulsions were examined as catalyst for Heck reaction. The catalytic efficiency was analysed for four cross-coupling reactions involving iodobenzene with different substituted alkenes namely methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and styrene. The coupling reactions were completed in a shorter period with good yields. Further, the recyclability test of Pd NPs revealed that the particles showed good activity until third catalytic cycle. The Pd NPs prepared in microemulsion-2 showed better activity compared to those prepared in microemulsions-1 and -3. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
