A series of palladium(H) complexes incorporating l-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholenes as the P-ligands were prepared from phospholene oxides by deoxygenation followed by complexation with PdCl2(PhCN)(2). The two 1-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholene ligands were trans position to each other in the Pd(II)-complexes. As the ligands contain a P-stereogenic center, the Pd-complexes were obtained as a 1:1 mixture of two stereoisomers, the homochiral (R,R and S,S) and the meso (R,S) forms, when racemic starting materials were used. An optically active Pd-complex containing (R)-1-propyl-3-phospholene ligand was also prepared. Catalytic activity of an aryl- and an alkyl-3-phospholene-palladium(II)-complex was evaluated in hydroalkoxycarbonylation of styrene. The alkyl-derivative showed higher activity and selectivity towards the formation of the esters of 3-phenylpropionic acid. However, the overall activity of these PdCl2(phospholene)(2)-type complexes was low.

The paper describes synthesis of a novel mesoporous and magnetically regenerated heterogeneous nanocatalyst with high catalytic activity. The synthesis strategy includes a one-step polycondensation reaction of melamine, formaldehyde and FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O in a simple and sustainable manner and followed by immobilization of Pd(II) on it. Formation and properties of nanocomposite were characterized by different techniques; the results were illustrated good surface area and a well-defined mesopore structure. Also the palladium-catalyzed C-C bond formation between aryl halides and olefins was selected to survey the activity of the synthesized nanocatalyst. Central Composite Design (CCD) strategy was used to predict the optimum synthesis conditions and identify the remarkable and effective factors including temperature, period of the reaction and amount of catalyst. These results were also verified experimentally. In order to minimize systematic error, the experimental runs as a randomized fashion were accomplished.

We found that in situ generated cerium(IV) carboxylate generated by mixing the precursor Ce((OBu)-Bu-t)(4) with the corresponding carboxylic acids served as efficient photocatalysts for the direct formation of carboxyl radicals from carboxylic acids under blue light-emitting diodes (blue LEDs) irradiation and air, resulting in catalytic decarboxylative oxygenation of aliphatic carboxylic acids to give C-O bond-forming products such as aldehydes and ketones. Control experiments revealed that hexanuclear Ce(IV) carboxylate clusters initially formed in the reaction mixture and the ligand-to-metal charge transfer nature of the Ce(IV) carboxylate clusters was responsible for the high catalytic performance to transform the carboxylate ligands to the carboxyl radical. In addition, the Ce(IV) carboxylate cluster catalyzed direct lactonization of 2-isopropylbenzoic acid to produce the corresponding peroxy lactone and gamma-lactone via intramolecular 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (1,5-HAT).

This report describes the synthesis of five new colorful 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts, a largely unexplored structural unit. These rare compounds are benzannulated structural derivatives of the well-known flavylium cations found widespread in natural pigments. These new dyes are directly compared to three previously synthesized 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts as well as eight colorful isomeric 9-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation, or 9-arylxanthylium, salts. The 9-arylxanthylium unit is commonly found in the biologically important rhodamine and rosamine dyes, yet six of the analogs presented in this study were either previously unreported or not isolated. The visual and spectroscopic properties of all 16 compounds were analyzed as a function of the structural differences between the compounds. All compounds displayed reversible halochromism in organic solution, displaying bright colors under acidic conditions and becoming colorless under basic conditions. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. The thianthrene S-oxide (TTSO)-mediated site-selective silylation of arenes has been realized via a thianthrenation/Pd-catalyzed silylation sequence. This method features a broad substrate scope and wide functional group tolerance under mild conditions and allows the synthesis of a set of (hetero)arylsilanes with operationally simple manipulations. The application and generality of the approach were further demonstrated by the late-stage functionalization of marketed drugs. This reaction also represents the first example of a Pd-catalyzed silylation reaction of aryl sulfonium salts.

Amino acid derivatives undergo non-Kolbe electrolysis to afford enantiomerically enriched alpha-alkoxyamino derivatives through intermediate chiral carbenium ions. The products contain N,O-acetals which are important structural motifs found in bioactive natural products. The reaction is performed in a continuous flow electrochemical reactor coupled to a 2D-HPLC for immediate online analysis. This allowed a fast screening of temperature, electrode material, current, flow-rate and concentration in a DoE approach. The combination with online HPLC demonstrates that also stereoselective reactions can benefit from a hugely accelerated optimisation by combining flow electrochemistry with multidimensional analysis.

In this research, the antibacterial activity and the interaction mechanisms of the major chemical constituent present in the Alpinia galanga rhizomes essential oil (AGREO) were investigated. Ethyl cinnamate, methyl cinnamate and n-pentadecane were the major components of AGREO. The antibacterial mechanism of AGREO on Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EHEC O157) was evaluated and the results proved that the potent antibacterial activity of AGREO was due to higher passive permeability of bacterial cell membrane, followed by crucial intracellular components efflux. Additionally, AGREO disrupted the intracellular physiological metabolism of EHEC O157, including inhibition of P-type ATPases activity and down-regulation expression of four virulence genes associated with EHEC infections. Notably, molecular docking studies suggested that ethyl cinnamate probably competed with the structural NAD(P)(+) for the binding sites of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), resulting in a decrease in G6PD activity with subsequent suppression of respiratory metabolism. The spectroscopic techniques and molecular docking studies proved that the AGREO major components were prone to bind to the minor groove of DNA.
