N-Acylpyrrole-type amides are a class of versatile building blocks in asymmetric synthesis. We report that by employing Ni(COD)(2)/2,2 ‘-bipyridine (5 mol%) catalytic system, the direct, catalytic alcoholysis of N-acylpyrrole-type aromatic and aliphatic amides with both primary and secondary alcohols can be achieved efficiently under very mild conditions (rt, 1 h) even at gram scale. By increasing the catalyst loading to 10 mol%, prolonging reaction time (18 h), and/or elevating reaction temperature to 50 degrees C/80 degrees C, the reaction could be extended to both complex and hindered N-acylpyrroles as well as to N-acylpyrazoles, Nacylindoles, and to other (functionalized) primary and secondary alcohols. In all cases, only 1.5 equiv. of alcohol were used. The value of the method has been demonstrated by the racemization-free, catalytic alcoholysis of chiral amides yielded from other asymmetric methodologies.

Palladium colloids obtained from the degradation of Hermann-Beller palladacycle proved to be an efficient catalytic system in combination with silver oxide as a selective oxidant for the oxidative esterification of differently substituted benzyl alcohols in MeOH as solvent. Excellent reactivity exhibited by the catalytic system also allowed the alcoholic coupling partner to be changed from MeOH to a wide range of alcohols having diverse functionalities. The mildness of the developed protocol also made it possible to employ propargyl alcohol as the coupling partner without any observation of any interference of the terminal alkyne. Selective oxidative coupling of a primary alcoholic functional group over secondary in the case of glycols and glycerols was also made possible using the developed catalyst system. To test the relevancy of Pd/Ag combined catalysis mixed Pd/Ag colloids were synthesized, characterized by TEM, XRD and XPS and applied to oxidative-esterification successfully.

Over the last decade, there has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence and gravity of systemic fungal diseases. This study aimed therefore at evaluating the antifungal potential of ester derivatives of benzoic and cinnamic acids from three Candida species. The compounds were prepared via Fischer esterification, and the antifungal assay was performed by the microdilution method in 96-well microplates for determining the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs). The findings of the antifungal tests revealed that the analogue compound methyl ferulate, methyl o-coumarate, and methyl biphenyl-3-carboxylate displayed an interesting antifungal activity against all Candida strains tested, with MIC values of 31.25-62.5, 62.5-125, and 62.5 mu g/ml, respectively. A preliminary Structure-Activity Relationship study of benzoic and cinnamic acid derivatives has led to the recognition of some important structural requirements for antifungal activity. The results of molecular docking indicate that the presence of the enoate moiety along with hydroxyl and one methoxy substitution in the phenyl ring has a positive effect on the bioactivity of compound 7 against Candida albicans. These observations further support the hypothesis that the antifungal activity of compound 7 could be due to its binding to multiple targets, specifically to QR, TS, and ST-PK. Additional experiments are required in the future to test this hypothesis and to propose novel compounds with improved antifungal activity.

A conceptionally novel nucleophilic substitution approach to synthetically important alkyl bromides is presented. Using molecular bromine (Br-2), readily available secondary benzyl and tertiary alkyl phenyl sulphides are converted into the corresponding bromides under exceptionally mild, acid- and base-free reaction conditions. This simple transformation allows the isolation of elimination sensitive benzylic beta-bromo carbonyl and nitrile compounds in mostly high yields and purities. Remarkably, protic functionalities such as acids and alcohols are tolerated. Enantioenriched benzylic beta-sulphido esters, readily prepared by asymmetric sulpha-Michael addition, produce the corresponding inverted bromides with high stereoselectivities, approaching complete enantiospecificity at -40 degrees C. Significantly, the reported benzylic beta-bromo esters can be stored without racemisation for prolonged periods at -20 degrees C. Their synthetic potential was demonstrated by the one-pot preparation of gamma-azido alcohol (S)-5 in 90% ee. NMR studies revealed an initial formation of a sulphide bromine adduct, which in turn is in equilibrium with a postulated dibromosulphurane intermediate that undergoes C-Br bond formation.

BACKGROUND Environmental safety of the agricultural utilization of livestock and poultry manures from intensive farming is attracting great attention and is effective as a good source of nitrogen for sustainable crop production. The present study aimed to determine the effects of organic poultry manure applications on the biological value and essential oil content of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). In this context, different doses of chicken, kibele (fermented chicken manure) and turkey manure (750, 1000, 1250 and 1500 kg da(-1)) with a control (no manure) were applied by sowing. RESULTS The essential oils consisted of p-Allyl-anisole as the most abundant component (5.65-17.90%), followed by nerol (6.69-16.11%), linalool (5.10-10.81%) and z-citral (5.23-10.73%). The contents of most of the chemical constituents varied significantly (P < 0.05) with organic poultry manure applications. The highest concentration for essential oils components was found in the chicken manure application. Both the antioxidant activity and total phenolic amounts of the basil extracts varied significantly as the organic poultry manure applications changed. The highest antioxidant activity and total phenolic amounts were obtained in the treatments with chicken manure doses of 1000 and 1250 kg da(-1), which were significantly different compared to the other treatments and the control treatment. Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of the essential oils against bacterial strains: Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 was assessed by the disc diffusion method and determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration. The results of antimicrobial assays indicated that all of the tested microorganisms were affected. The highest antibacterial activity against all tested microbial species was observed with 1250 kg da(-1) chicken manure applications. CONCLUSION Among the organic poultry fertilizations, chicken fertilization was of particular interest. Especially, chicken manure doses of 1000-1250 kg da(-1) had the highest antibacterial and antioxidant activity, as well as total phenolics, flavonoids and essential oil components. A new heterogeneous cobalt catalyst has been synthesized by immobilizing Co species onto a nitrogen-rich porous organic polymer (Co@imine-POP). The heterogeneous catalyst synthesized was efficient in Heck and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions in green media under mild reaction conditions without inert air and phase transfer agents. This phosphine-, copper-, and palladium-free catalyst was stable under the reaction conditions and could be reused for at least eight successive runs without a discernible decrease in its catalytic activity.

HPLC of Formula: C13H8O2. I found the field of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology; Chemistry very interesting. Saw the article Investigation of Lactones as Innovative Bio-Sourced Phase Change Materials for Latent Heat Storage published in 2019.0, Reprint Addresses Stamatiou, A (corresponding author), Lucerne Univ Appl Sci & Arts, Competence Ctr Thermal Energy Storage TES, CH-6048 Horw, Switzerland.. The CAS is 2005-10-9. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of 6H-Benzo[c]chromen-6-one.

In the presented work, five bio-based and bio-degradable cyclic esters, i.e. lactones, have been investigated as possible phase change materials for applications in latent heat storage systems. Commercial natural lactones such as epsilon-caprolactone and gamma-valerolactone were easily purchased through chemical suppliers, while 1,2-campholide, oxa-adamantanone and dibenzochromen-6-one were synthesized through Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The compounds were characterized with respect to attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, in order to confirm their chemical structures and identity. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to measure the phase change temperatures, enthalpies of fusion, degradation temperatures, as well to estimate the degree of supercooling. The lactones showed a wide range of phase change temperatures from -40 degrees C to 290 degrees C, making them a high interest for both low and high temperature latent heat storage applications, given the lack of organic phase change materials covering phase change temperature ranges below 0 degrees C and above 80 degrees C. However, low enthalpies of fusion, high degrees of supercooling and thermal degradations at low temperatures were registered for all samples, rendering them unsuitable as phase change materials.

The aim of this work was to undertake a detailed analysis on chemical constituents of brown propolis, originating from four different states (Bahia, Minas Gerais, Parana and Sergipe) of Brazil. The volatile profile was determined by using HS-SPME-GC-MS along with the determination of total phenolic compounds content, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. A total of 315 volatile compounds were identified, however, several of them have not been reported so far in the Brazilian brown propolis. The terpenes represented the major class with 40.92-84.66% of the total area in the chromatograms. PCA analysis of the majority of compounds successfully indicated the volatile profile of each propolis sample according to their geographical origin. The analysis of volatile compounds and its characterization also varied significantly and confirmed that these depended on the geographical area of collection of propolis. The data generated in this work may help in establishing criteria for quality control and tracking the specific region of propolis production in different states of Brazil.
