With the view to investigate the presence of thiols in cheese, the use of different methods of preparation and extraction with an organomercuric compound (p-hydroxymercuribenzoate) enabled the isolation of a new compound The anal. of cheese extracts by gas chromatog. coupled with pulse flame photometry, mass spectrometry, and olfactometry detections led to the identification of Et 3-mercaptopropionate in Munster and Camembert cheeses. This compound, described at low concentrations as having pleasant, fruity, grapy, rhubarb, and empyreumatic characters, has previously been reported in wine and Concord grape but was never mentioned before in cheese. A possible route for the formation of this compound in relation with the catabolism of sulfur amino acids is proposed.

Tandem reactions of enamino lactams and lactones with maleic and itaconic anhydride yielded alkylidenespirolactams in good yields; further reduction of the exocyclic C=C double bond of the enamino moiety proceeded with excellent diastereoselectivity. Overall, one C-C and two C-N bonds, as well as three new stereocenters were created in a diastereoselective manner resulting in a fast upbuild of mol. complexity.

Authors report a facile synthesis of α-quaternary BCPs using organophotoredox and hydrogen atom transfer catalysis in which α-keto radicals, generated through oxidation of β-ketocarbonyls, underwent efficient addition to [1.1.1]propellane. The BCP products can be transformed into a variety of useful derivatives including enantioenriched BCPs featuring α-quaternary stereocenters.

It was recently discovered that 6-aminoquinolone derivatives could be valid leads for the development of new anti-HIV agents because of their new and diversified mode of action. The studies carried out on the lead compound WM5 showed that this derivative is able to inhibit the Tat-mediated long terminal repeat driven transcription, an essential step in the HIV-1 replication cycle. Thus, starting from lead WM5, the design and synthesis of an enlarged series of 6-aminoquinolones, e.g. I (R1 = Me, 2-benzothiazolyl, biphenyl, 4-FC6H4, etc.; R2 = 2-MeOC6H4, 2-thiazolyl, 2-pyridyl, 5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl, etc.), was performed and their structure-activity relationship was studied. I (R1 = Me; R2 = 3-F3CC6H4, 2-thiazolyl, 2-pyrazinyl, 2-benzoxazolyl) proved to be highly effective in inhibiting HIV replication at 50% inhibitory concentration in the range of 0.0087-0.7 μg/mL in MT-4, PBMCs and CEM cell lines coupled with pos. selectivity indexes that reach values higher than 1000 on CEM cell lines for I (R1 = Me; R2 = 2-thiazolyl, 2-pyrazinyl). Time-of-addition experiments clearly confirm that the new, potent 6-aminoquinolones interact at a postintegration step in the replication cycle of HIV.

Radical 1,3-carboheteroarylation and 1,3-hydroalkylation of allylboronic esters comprising a 1,2-B shift is reported. Allylboronic esters are generally used in synthesis as allylation reagents where the boronic ester moiety gets lost. In the introduced cascades, alkyl boronic esters were obtained with the B entity remaining in the product. The carboheteroarylation of the allylboronic esters are conducted without metal catalyst and the 1,3-hydroalkylation is achieved using Fe catalysis. Both reactions work efficiently under mild conditions.

The readily installed allylsulfonyl moiety acts as a C-radical precursor, which is substituted by various functionalities using sulfur-based radical trapping reagents. The generality of this approach is documented by the successful desulfonylative alkynylation, azidation, trifluoromethylthiolation, sulfenylation, trifluoromethylselenylation, halogenation, and deuteration. The method is compatible with a wide range of functional groups. Considering the deuteration, products are obtained in good yields with a high level of deuterium incorporation.

Porphyrins and metalloporphyrins (or porphyrin coordination complexes) have been wildly investigated as photocatalysts in recent years. Herein we synthesized two new A3B porphyrins, a new asym. A3B zinc-porphyrin ligand with peripheral chelate group (pyridine dicarboxylate), and a ruthenium(II) complex of the porphyrin ligand. Their photo-phys. properties were characterized and investigated by UV-visible and fluorescent emission. The modeling of the mol. structures was optimized by DFT theor. calculation All porphyrin compounds exhibited strong absorbance at the Soret bands and Q bands. The free base of porphyrin possessed a higher quantum yield and a longer life time than the other two zinc-porphyrins and ruthenium-porphyrin in terms of fluorescence. Furthermore, the ruthenium-porphyrin complex can be used as a promising photocatalyst under visible light for two kinds of organic reactions: ketone-related oxidative aminothiocyanation (above 90% yield) and indole-related oxidative thiocyanation (around 80% yield) with a remarkable low amount (0.1 mmol %).
