The activities of seven hydrolytic enzymes (L-alanine aminopeptidase, esterase, α-and β-glucosidase, phosphomonoesterase, phosphodiesterase, sulfatase) were monitored during 1 yr in parallel and serial treatment units of the biol. stage of a communal wastewater treatment plant. The spatial homogeneity of enzyme activities was high (coefficients of variation <10% for the entire treatment stage). A significant difference between aerated and stirred tanks was not observed Temperature seemed not to exert a direct influence. Long periods with comparably constant activities were interrupted by a few strong, short-time rises. The mean enzyme activities followed the sequence sulfatase < α-glucosidase < phosphodiesterase ≈ β-glucosidase≈esterase < phosphomonoesterase < L-alanine aminopeptidase. The enzyme activities correlated among themselves at different levels. Very strong (r > 0.8) and highly significant (p < 0.01) correlations between the activities of both glucosidases, both phosphoesterases, and between phosphomonoesterase and both glucosidases were ascertained, pointing to the importance of substrate specificity and similarity of metabolic functions. Moderate and strong activity correlations with various wastewater constituents and with process parameters, e.g., concentrations, loads and eliminated amounts of phosphorous, TOC concentrations and loads of the plant effluent, dry matter content of activated sludge, and sludge volume, were found.

Nucleation efficiency and the special supermol. structure formed in the presence of novel nucleating agents, N,N’-dicyclohexylsuberoylamide and N,N’-dicyclohexylsebacoylamide are presented in this work. The nucleation effect is studied in isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The melting and crystallization processes as well as the polymorphic composition are studied using calorimetric and thermo-optical techniques, while the solubility of the nucleating agents is studied by rheol. The properties of the iPP products nucleated by the novel compounds are characterized by conventional tensile and impact tests and the optical properties are measured by standardized haze measurements. The results indicated clearly that the studied nucleating agents are partially soluble in the iPP melt and possess dual nucleating ability. The formation of β-phase is evidenced by the calorimetric and thermo-optical measurements. The morphol. of the nucleated samples shows similarity to iPP nucleated by well-known soluble “organogelators”; however, the nucleating agents introduced in this work are the first “organogelators” with β-nucleating efficiency.

The reactions of the N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphinidene adducts (NHC)PSiMe3 and (NHC)PH with the dinuclear ruthenium and osmium complexes [(η6-p-cymene)MCl2]2 (M = Ru, Os) afforded the half-sandwich complexes [(η6-p-cymene){(NHC)P}MCl] and [(η6-p-cymene){(NHC)PH}MCl2] with two- and three-legged piano-stool geometries, resp. The complexes were initially tested as precatalysts for the hydroboration of benzonitrile, and the most active species, the ruthenium complex [(η6-p-cymene){(IMes)P}RuCl], was further used for the efficient hydroboration of a wide range (ca. 50 substrates) of nitriles, carboxylic esters, and carboxamides in neat pinacolborane (HBpin) under comparatively mild reaction conditions (60-80°C, 3-5 mol % catalyst loading). Preliminary mechanistic and kinetic studies are reported, and stoichiometric reactions with HBpin indicate the initial formation of the monohydride complex [(η6-p-cymene){(IMes)P}RuH] as the putative catalytically active species.

The role of electrostatics on the interfacial properties of polyelectrolyte microgels has been discussed controversially in the literature. It is not yet clear if, or how, Coulomb interactions affect their behavior under interfacial confinement. In this work, we combine compression isotherms, at. force microscopy imaging, and computer simulations to further investigate the behavior of pH-responsive microgels at oil-water interfaces. At low compression, charged microgels can be compressed more than uncharged microgels. The in-plane effective area of charged microgels is found to be smaller in comparison to uncharged ones. Thus, the compressibility is governed by in-plane interactions of the microgels with the interface. At high compression, however, charged microgels are less compressible than uncharged microgels. Microgel fractions located in the aqueous phase interact earlier for charged than for uncharged microgels because of their different swelling perpendicular to the interface. Therefore, the compressibility at high compression is controlled by out-of-plane interactions. In addition, the size of the investigated microgels plays a pivotal role. The charge-dependent difference in compressibility at low compression is only observed for small but not for large microgels, while the behavior at high compression does not depend on the size. Our results highlight the complex nature of soft polymer microgels as compared to rigid colloidal particles. We clearly demonstrate that electrostatic interactions affect the interfacial properties of polyelectrolyte microgels.

The presence of cyano groups in the stationary phase may provide useful selective interactions during separation In capillary gas chromatog., the full utility of such interactions will be evident when the columns show high efficiency, good deactivation, high thermal stability, and reproducibility in retention characteristics. Columns that fulfill these requirements were prepared Fused silica capillaries were treated with HCl, silanized at a high temperature with cyclic cyanopropylsiloxane, and statically coated with cyanopropylsilicone gum, which was finally immobilized by in situ crosslinking. Vulcanization is normally inhibited by cyanopropyl groups, but a certain percent of tolyl groups in the gum made crosslinking possible. The usefulness of the cyanosilicone columns is demonstrated by the separation of several samples such as fatty acid Me esters and pheromones.

Direct perfluoroalkylation of aliphatic thiols was performed in the presence of sodium hydroxymethanesulfinate (Rongalite). Reaction of mercaptoalkanoic esters with trifluoromethyl bromide gave the corresponding trifluoromethylthio ethers. Condensation of alkane dithiols with perfluoroalkyl iodides led mainly to fluorinated dithioethers. These alkylation reactions are interpreted as occurring via in situ formation of dialkyl disulfides. A mixture of Rongalite and water was introduced to a mixture of Me mercaptoacetate and sodium phosphate in DMF. The flask was evacuated and bromotrifluoromethane (gas) was introduced while the pressure was maintained at 4.5 bar. After work-up the yield of Me [(trifluoromethyl)thio]acetate was 48%.

Couples of A. orana were isolated for 1 wk in small 1.25 L rearing boxes in the laboratory with sex gland components deposited on rubber caps. At the end of the trails females were dissected and spermatophores counted. Reduction of mating increased with the dose of a mixture of the attractant components Z-9-tetradecenyl acetate  [16725-53-4] and Z-11-tetradecenyl acetate  [20711-10-8] (9:1), but decreased with increasing d. of 1-5, 10 and 20 couples per box. Each of the attractant components alone produced a mating inhibition equal to the mixture The minor components Z-9-dodecenyl acetate  [16974-11-1] and dodecyl acetate  [112-66-3] had approx. the same effect as the main components, but tetradecyl acetate  [638-59-5] and Z-11-tetradecenyl alc.  [34010-15-6] had no effect. Identical trials conducted on a strain of summerfruit moth newly introduced to rearing showed that 10 times less product was needed to achieve the same degree of mating inhibition as with the old strain. With adaptation to laboratory conditions the proportion of unmated females diminished and repeated matings occurred more frequently. To achieve meaningful results one must work with material from regularly renewed rearings, or better with the direct descendants of individuals from orchards. The results are discussed in relation to mating disruption of A. orana in orchards.

Surface chem. densification was recently introduced as a low cost and fast process to improve surface hardness of wood. The asym. d. profile at the surface due to polymer filled cells was achieved through unilateral impregnation of monomers and their fast in situ polymerization under electron beam radiations. This study investigates the effect of electron beam dose on the newly developed material in order to optimize and increase the performances. Effect of doses from 25 to 125 kGy on wood and polymer in situ were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy, confocal Raman microscopy and GC-MS quantification of extracted residual monomers. Brinell hardness of irradiated controls decreased with increased dose while it remained unchanged for densified samples. The effect of 25 kGy on the irradiated wood controls was insignificant, but evidence of cellulose depolymerization and decrease of hydrogen bonds strength was found at higher dose through FTIR anal. Raman investigation of the acrylate conversion in situ showed that most of the polymerization was achieved with 25 kGy. Residual monomers were still present in the wood samples up to 100 kGy. Thus, 25 kGy was sufficient to polymerize monomers in situ and increase Brinell hardness of densified wood while avoiding degradation of wood. However, 100 kGy was necessary to ensure highest conversion and no residual monomers. This study is opening perspectives on radiation effects on wood for optimal materials development.
