The whiskey industry is dominated by whiskey styles with recipes that contain corn as the primary grain. However, little research has been conducted to investigate whiskey specific distinctions arising from different corn varieties and growing environments (i.e. terroir). Further, no studies have investigated the aroma or flavor impacts of different varieties and terroirs. Here, three different commodity yellow dent hybrid corn varieties were grown on different farms in Texas, spanning from the Texas Panhandle to the Mexico-United States border. Using novel small-batch mashing techniques, a newly developed new-make (i.e. unaged whiskey, immediate byproduct of distillation) bourbon sensory lexicon, a trained sensory panel, high-performance liquid chromatog., and gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry/olfactometry (GC-MS/O), we report for the first time a method for evaluating sample effects on alc. yield and flavor in new-make bourbon whiskey. We discover that variety, terroir and their interactions, previously ignored, can substantially affect valuable sensory aspects of whiskey, suggesting the importance of scientifically evaluating corn genetics and agronomy for developing better whiskey. Excitingly, our data suggest milled corn with higher levels of benzadehyde, readily measured by GC-MS/O, correlates with improved sensory aspects of distillate, which must be expensively evaluated using a trained human sensory panel.

Et levulinate is an environmentally friendly biomass-derived ester that is an alternative to the classic petroleum-derived fuel additives. Several studies have been addressed to its chem. production pathways. The supercritical esterification of levulinic acid to Et levulinate, however, remains understudied. This work reports the effect of process variables and a kinetic study for the esterification of levulinic acid with ethanol under sub and supercritical conditions. Exptl. data were obtained in a continuous tubular reactor at a fixed pressure of 100 bar. The reaction temperature varied from 220 to 280 °C, and the ethanol to levulinic acid molar ratios from (2:1) to (9:1). Et levulinate was synthesized with high selectivity under all evaluated reaction conditions, achieving conversions up to 80% and 93% when ethanol to levulinic acid molar ratios of (2:1) and (9:1) were used, resp. A PFR model approach was considered with an elementary reversible self-catalyzed rate law, and the effect of considering the mixture d. behavior through the reactor using the PC-SAFT equation of state was discussed. The proposed kinetic approach was able to correlate the kinetic exptl. data for all exptl. conditions used in this study. Furthermore, a thermodn. anal. was performed to elucidate trends in reaction performance.

Litsea cubeba (LC) kernel is a kind of waste after LC essential oil processing, which oil was found to be rich in medium chain fatty acids. Such oil was originally applied as a potential feedstock for the synthesis of trimethylolpropane fatty acid triester (TFATE) as a biolubricant base oil with desirable lubricating properties. LC kernel oil was firstly decolorized, and then treated by glycerolysis and methanolysis to produce LC fatty acid Me ester (FAME). The biolubricant base oil was produced by the transesterification of LC FAME with trimethylolpropane (TMP) catalyzed by TMP-potassium, where reaction conditions were FAME to TMP ratio (4:1), catalyst dosage (10% based on TMP), pressure (100 Pa), temperature (130 °C) and time (1 h). The products from each processing step were characterized by GC-FID, ATR-FTIR, and DSC to make sure the reaction complete. The purified product with 92.0% of TFATE was finally obtained by mol. distillation, which lubricating properties were qualified according to ISO VG 32 standard The present findings proposed that LC kernel oil could be used as a promising alternative biolubricant feedstock as its derived TFATE product could achieve good oxidative stability (35 min, ROBT 150 °C) and low-temperature performance (pour point of -15 °C).

Although there are several works in the literature that study the presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in surface waters, the vast majority focus their attention on pharmaceuticals and little information is found about personal care products (PCPs). Therefore, this study focused, for the first time, on the monitoring of five classes of PCPs-fragrance allergens, synthetic musks, phthalates, antioxidants, and UV-filters-in the surface water of four small-size typically pollution-impacted Portuguese rivers (Ave, Leca, Antua≈and Certima). A solid-phase microextraction (SPME) followed by gas chromatog.-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) protocol was employed to analyze surface water samples collected in two seasonal campaigns-summer and winter (34 samples per season). A total of 22 out of 37 target PCPs were detected concomitantly at least once in one sampling point, being the most frequently detected α-isomethyl ionone, galaxolide, tonalide and cashmeran. The highest concentrations were confirmed for diethylhexyl phthalate (610.6 ng L-1), galaxolide (379.2 ng L-1), geraniol (290.9 ng L-1), linalool (271.2 ng L-1), benzophenone-3 (254.1 ng L-1) and citronellol (200.2 ng L-1). Leca River, traversing the more densely urban and industrialized area, had the highest levels of contaminants, which were also found in the sampling points located downstream of wastewater treatment plants discharge points. In general, higher levels were detected in summer, when the river flows are lower. Hazard quotients were determined and octocrylene, tonalide, and geraniol presented values above 1 in some sampling sites, which may indicate an ecotoxicol. risk to the aquatic environment. The results presented suggest that these three PCPs should be included as priority pollutants in environmental monitoring schemes in surface waters, due to their high detection, persistence, and potential adverse effects.

Here, we show that the host cytosolic RNA sensing mols. RIG-I-like receptor (RLR) signaling proteins RIG-I and MDA5, their common adaptor protein MAVS, and the RNA-dependent kinase PKR each independently inhibit MTb growth in human cells. Furthermore, we show that MTb broadly stimulates RIG-I, MDA5, MAVS, and PKR gene expression and their biol. activities. We also show that the oral FDA-approved drug nitazoxanide (NTZ) significantly inhibits intracellular MTb growth and amplifies MTb-stimulated RNA sensor gene expression and activity. This study establishes prototypic cytoplasmic RNA sensors as innate restriction factors for MTb growth in human cells and it shows that targeting this pathway is a potential host-directed approach to treat tuberculosis disease.

The heterogeneity of the vineyard environment caused high variability in grape metabolites and flavor profiles, and the phenomenon was more prominent in recent years of climate change. Herein, distal leaf removal was applied in semi-arid Xinjiang to adjust the source to sink ratio of grapevines for three consecutive years (2018-2020). The grape-derived volatiles showed high correlations with specific climate factors such as temperature changes in the growth period. Results showed that distal leaf removal increased the solar radiation reaching the clusters in the first few days after applying LR treatments while not affecting the temperature The improvement in fruity and floral aroma intensity by distal leaf removal was founded not only in grape metabolites but also in wines. Moderate cluster exposure brought by distal leaf removal was beneficial for the accumulation of isoprenoids, which therefore increased the fruity and floral intensity of wines. The carry-over effect did not show in consecutively defoliated vines among vintages regarding the wine aroma profile.
