The aerosols generated from e-cigarettes are composed of liquid and gas phases resulting from vaporized e-liquid The apportioning of substances from e-liquid into the liquid and gas phases during e-cigarette use has not been extensively studied. Partitioning of e-liquid components between the gas and the liquid phase of the aerosol influences the substances inhaled and exhaled by the users, leading to second-hand exposure. It seems important to determine which compounds and how much of them are transferred into the gas phase and may immediately enter the bloodstream. For this purpose, a method based on thermal desorption followed by gas chromatog. coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) in electron ionization mode was developed. As in a previous study, an automatic generator of an aerosol from an e-cigarette with a collection tube filled with melt-blown non-woven fabric disks and equipped with Tenax TA sorption tubes was used. The melt-blown non-woven fabric is designed to capture liquid phase compounds, while sorption tubes are meant to sorb compounds in the gas phase of the aerosol. To control the e-liquid mass changes before and after a puff session, quantitation based on the mass change tracking approach (MCT) was applied. Accuracy of the developed method ranged between 91% and 110% regardless of the spiking level, with precision and reproducibility better than 10%. The limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.015 to 0.076 ng of substance emitted/mg of consumed e-liquid, while limits of quantitation (LOQs) ranged from 0.045 to 0.23 ng of substance emitted/mg of consumed e-liquid Most of the compounds are deposited in the liquid phase of the aerosol, while only trace levels of some substances may be observed in an actual, non-condensed gas phase.

Co doped into 5% Zr-TiO2 (Co@5% Zr/-TiO2) was prepared by a simple, facile sol-gel method, and employing in the catalytic transfer hydrogen (CTH) process starting from Et levulinate (EL) to γ-valerolactone (GVL). Lewis/Bronsted acid ratio and BET surface area increased with the incorporation of Co into Ti-Zr-O support. In addition, the synergistic effect between Co-Zr in TiO2 enhanced the strong acid strength sites. Co@5% Zr-TiO2 exhibited the highest catalytic performance (EL conversion 95%, GVL yield 88%) under optimum condition (0.2 M EL, 15 mL 2-PrOH, 190°C, 11 h). Noticeably, Co@5% Zr-TiO2 exhibited higher stability in 4th recycling experiments as compared to 5% Zr-TiO2 under identical condition. From computational calculation, EL adsorption process was more spontaneous with ΔEad= -8.240 eV. The protonation process made the reactants get close to the surface with a bonded O12-Ti2.179 Å and O6-Zr of 2.376 Å. Finally, GVL showed a strong leaving trend after the formation.

The occurrence of emerging contaminants is becoming of increasing importance to assess the impact of anthropogenic activities onto the environment. The multicriteria method of desirability functions allowed the optimization of the exptl. conditions in terms of extraction time and extraction temperature Validation proved the reliability of the method for the determination of the analytes at ultra-trace levels, obtaining detection limits in the 0.2-13 ng/L range, good precision, with relative standard deviations lower than 20% and recovery rates in the 80 ± 12%-111 ± 11%. Pyrolysis is a promising thermochem. strategy to convert scrap tires into diesel-like fuels. Crude tire pyrolysis oil (CTPO) was produced in a 10 ton rotating autoclave reactor by thermal depolymerization of the tire polymers. In this work, the prior-reported straightforward and inexpensive strategy of upgrading CTPO using a combination of silica gel (as adsorbent) and petroleum ether (as the solvent) has been scaled up with minimal loss in mass of oil and improved physicochem. characteristics (e.g., lowered acid value, low sulfur content). The upgraded TPO (StTPO) was characterized extensively to better understand their chem. compositions, physicochem. properties, and combustion characteristics. StTPO was mixed with diesel in different volumetric proportions and the blends were studied for performance and emission characteristics in a single-cylinder engine. The use of biomass-derived Et levulinate (EL) as a fuel oxygenate improved the cold-flow properties of StTPO-diesel blends as well as lowered the exhaust emissions (e.g., lower NOx). A fuel blend consisting of 50% diesel, 40% StTPO, and 10% EL demonstrated the best fuel properties in the single-cylinder diesel engine.

Polystyrene/poly(LMA-divinyl benzene) or PS/P(LMA-DVB) composite seed particles were first prepared by slightly modified activated swelling of micron-sized PS seed particles utilizing either water or water-ethanol dispersion medium. The influence of poly(vinyl alc.) (PVA) as steric stabilizer on the size and size distribution was evaluated. The poor solubility of LMA in the continuous phase hindered the homogeneous swelling of PS particles even in the presence of ethanol (5% weight/weight) and resulted in fairly polydispersed PS/P(LMA-DVB) composite seed particles. The composite seed particles were then functionalized with epoxide group by seeded polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to produce PS/P(LMA-DVB)/PGMA composite polymer particles. The epoxide functionalized PS/P(LMA-DVB)/PGMA composite polymer particles were used to adsorb two kinds of azo dyes, congo red (CR) and direct red-75 (DR-75). The effects of initial dye concentration at 303 and 323 K on adsorption behavior were investigated and the adsorption was explained by adsorption isotherms. Temperature dependent adsorption measurements were also carried out at identical initial dye concentration The adsorption results showed that inclusion of reactive epoxide group on/near the surface of hydrophobic PS/P(LMA-DVB) composite seed particles improved the adsorption capacity of dye mols.

A metal organic framework material MIL-101 was developed as an effective solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the extraction of eleven UV filters compounds The MIL-101 adsorbent was packed into a polypropylene cartridge and connected at the outlet tip with the Visiprep vacuum manifolds allowing process up to 12-port SPE samples, simultaneously. The extracted UV filters were quantified by gas chromatog.-tandem mass spectrometry. Several parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the target analytes, i.e. desorption conditions, sample pH, the addition of salt and sample volume were optimized by ANOVA anal. followed by a multifactorial design. The sample breakthrough volume of the developed method was also evaluated. The SPE-GC-MS/MS method was validated in terms of linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9973), accuracy (with satisfactory recovery from 82% to 105%), precision (relative standard deviation of less than 10%) and limits of detection ranging from 1.0 to 11.7 ng L-1. The validated method was successfully applied for the extraction and quantification of the target UV filters in different types of water samples, including lake, river, seawater and swimming pool waters. The most often found UV filters were octocrylene, 4-methylbencylidene camphor and homosalate that also came out with the highest concentrations, up to 4000 ng L-1, particularly in swimming pool waters.

Fabricating antibacterial hydrogels with antimicrobial drugs and synthetic biocompatible biomimetic hydrogels is a promising strategy for practical medical applications. Here, we report a bicomponent hydrogel composed of a biomimetic polyisocyanopetide (PIC) hydrogel and a photodynamic antibacterial membrane-intercalating conjugated oligoelectrolyte (COE). The aggregation behavior and aggregate size of the COEs in water can be regulated using the PIC hydrogel, which could induce COEs with higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) production efficiency and increased association of COEs toward bacteria, therefore enhancing the antibacterial efficiency. This strategy provides a facile method for developing biomimetic hydrogels with high antibacterial capability.

The main content is Methylene dioxymetamphetamine (MDMA) and Methamphetamine (MA), but because a large amount of demand is not balanced with sufficient supply, ecstasy tablets are often adulterated with various contents, such as Paracetamol (PCT), Caffeine (KFN) and Ephedrine (EFD). Ecstasy tablets are often combined with other active compounds so that they can cause problems in determining the levels of tablets carried out in the Police Forensic Lab, so a cheaper, effective, and fast method is needed in determining the levels of these tablets. The research was conducted exptl. with the spectrophotometric method, namely the dual-wavelength method, then the validation was tested based on the validation parameters, namely linearity, accuracy, precision, LOD and LOQ. Then, this method was applied to determine levels of MA, EFD, KFN and PCT in tablet preparations The results showed that the application of the dual-wavelength method for the assay was carried out at λ 250.6 nm and 263 nm for KFN, at λ 263 nm and 281.8 nm for MA, at λ 259.4 nm and 255 nm for PCT at λ 255 nm and 236 nm for EFD, resp. with a level result of 40.05; 1.63; 38.11; 20.21 for MA, EFD, KFN and PCT resp., and with good precision and accuracy. The dual-wavelength UV spectrophotometric method was successfully applied to determine the levels of MA, EFD, KFN and PCT mixtures in tablets.
