Bleached kraft pulp from Eucalyptus benthamii, E. globulus and E. nitens was purified via cold caustic extraction (CCE) with 5% and 10% (w/v) NaOH and activated with dilute acid hydrolysis (samples were coded as CCE5-H and CCE10-H, resp.) to produce dissolving-grade pulp. Hydrogels from CCE5-H and CCE10-H pulps were fabricated through the N-methylmorpholine N-oxide route and tested for methylene blue (MB) adsorption. The morphol., fiber biometry, mol. and supramol. structure, thermal stability and swelling capacity were also investigated. A higher degree of crystallinity was observed for cellulose in CCE10-H hydrogels. CCE10-H hydrogels also resulted in denser structures with lower swelling than CCE5-H hydrogels. The exptl. data for MB adsorption were fitted better to the Langmuir model, which led to estimated maximum adsorption capacities of 36-51 mg/g for CCE5-H hydrogels and 27-33 mg/g for CCE10-H hydrogels. Regarding the Eucalyptus species, hydrogels fabricated from E. nitens exhibited the highest capacities for adsorption of MB. This was attributed to the lowest crystalline fractions and crystallite sizes, and the highest kink indexes and intrinsic viscosities of E. nitens dissolving pulps, which resulted in regenerated hydrogels with highest pore coverage and water absorption capacities, and better accessibility to MB particles.

As immunity against SARS-COV-2 wanes following first and second doses of vaccination, a third dose is administered in several countries around the world. Similarly to the first doses, risks related to vaccination and humoral immune response in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) need to be assessed. Characterize safety and humoral immune response following the third dose of COVID-19 vaccination in a large cohort of MS patients. We assessed the safety of the third dose of the BNT162b2-COVID-19 mRNA vaccination in adult MS patients and evaluated SARS-CoV-2 IgG response. Two hundred and eleven adult MS patients received a third dose of BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccination. Median follow up time was 66 days from vaccine administration (IQR 54-84). The frequency of any adverse event was 54.5%, with the most common reported adverse events being fatigue, local pain at the injection site, fever and muscle or joint pain. Transient increase in MS symptoms was reported in 3.8% of patients, none of them requiring treatment. The rate of acute relapses treated with IV steroids was 3.3%. In a sub-group of 55 patients, 20 untreated and 35 treated with vaccination-safe disease-modifying treatments, SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels increased 21-fold (median ± SD 21.6 ± 53.05). The third dose of COVID-19-BNT162b2 vaccine proved safe for MS patients, with no increased risk of relapse activity. Untreated patients and patients treated with vaccination-safe disease-modifying treatments show significant increase in SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels following the third dose of vaccination.

Three oxazolidine-2-one based acrylates monomers were synthesized by the reaction of oxazolidine-2-one with 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA), neopentyl glycol diacrylate (NPGDA) and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA). The mol. structures of the products were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and electrospray ionization high resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-HRMS). The photo-polymerization kinetics of the synthesized oxazolidine-2-one based acrylates were investigated by real-time IR spectroscopy. The results showed that the oxazolidine-2-one based acrylates with 1 weight% 2-isopropylthioxanthone (ITX) could be cured to form a transparent film under UV irradiation The UV curing speed of oxazolidine-2-one based acrylates with 1 weight% ITX was better than that of TMPTA with 1 weight% ITX and 3 weight% Et 4-(dimethylamino) benzoate (EDB) as co-initiator. Based on the HRMS anal. of oligomers extracted from the UV-cured film, the plausible photopolymerization mechanism was proposed. The synthesized monomer formula with CN996 resin can be 3D printed forming various models with smooth surface, good accuracy, excellent thermal stability and 99.4% gel content.
