Synthetic antioxidants represent a complex group of additive chems. broadly used in consumer products. While traditional antioxidants such as 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT) were well studied, a variety of “novel” antioxidants have emerged with extensive applications but received much less attention. Our study aimed to explore a suite of 34 emerging antioxidants in house dust from four different regions, including Guangzhou (China), Adelaide (Australia), Carbondale (Illinois), and Hanoi (Vietnam). The results revealed broad occurrence of several rarely investigated chems. in house dust across regions, including triethylene glycol bis(3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)propionate (AO245), 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-(dimethylamino)methylphenol (AO4703), 2,2′-thiene-2,5-diylbis(5-tert-butyl-1,3-benzoxazole) (BBOT), 1,3-diphenylguanidine (DPG), 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)phenol (2,4DtBP), and 2,6-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)phenol (2,6DtBP). In particular, DPG exhibited a median concentration of 5030-11 400 ng/g in house dust from the studied regions except for Hanoi (305 ng/g), generally 1 order of magnitude greater than that of BHT (890-1060 ng/g) and dominating the compositional profiles of antioxidants. Estimated intake of target antioxidants by toddlers via dust ingestion, even under the high exposure scenario, was determined to be 2-4 orders of magnitude lower than the reference doses of selected antioxidants. However, potential risks from long-term exposure to a cocktail of antioxidants under environmentally relevant concentrations merit further investigations due to insufficient knowledge on the sources, fate, and toxicokinetics of these chems. to date.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease, and the diagnosis is quite difficult due to the unavailability of reliable clin. markers. This study aimed to investigate the fecal metabolites in PsA by comparison with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and to identify potential diagnostic biomarkers for PsA. The metabolic profiles of the fecal samples from 27 PsA and 29 RA patients and also 36 healthy controls (HCs) were performed on ultrahigh- performance liquid chromatog. coupled with hybrid triple quadrupole time-offlight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS). And differentially altered metabolites were screened and assessed using multivariate anal. for exploring the potential biomarkers of PsA. The results showed that 154 fecal metabolites were significantly altered in PsA patients when compared with HCs, and 45 metabolites were different when compared with RA patients. A total of 14 common differential metabolites could be defined as candidate biomarkers. Furthermore, a support vector machines (SVM) model was performed to distinguish PsA from RA patients and HCs, and 5 fecal metabolites, namely, α/β-turmerone, glycerol 1-hexadecanoate, dihydrosphingosine, pantothenic acid and glutamine, were determined as biomarkers for PsA. Through the metabolic pathways anal., we found that the abnormality of amino acid metabolism, bile acid metabolism and lipid metabolism might contribute to the occurrence and development of PsA. In summary, our research provided ideas for the early diagnosis and treatment of PsA by identifying fecal biomarkers and analyzing metabolic pathways.

Incompatible polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) are difficult to sep. in mixed recycling streams such as waste plastic packaging, which makes polyolefin mixtures unsuitable for high-quality products. In this work, based on the free radical branching reaction, a co-branching reaction of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and high-d. polyethylene (HDPE) blends was carried out in the presence of the peroxide, free radical regulator and multifunctional acrylate monomer, and a star-like long-chain branching (LCB) copolymer was obtained. The effect of in situ compatibilization on the structures and mech. properties of iPP/HDPE was investigated, and the compatibilization mechanism was discussed. Results showed that the mech. properties of the modified blends were largely improved, and efficient in-situ compatibilization of iPP and HDPE could be taken place in a wide process window. Moreover, the sizes of the dispersed phase in the modified blends were clearly decreased, and the interfacial thickness increased. Compared with the pure iPP/HDPE blend, the initial crystallization temperature of iPP in the modified iPP/HDPE blend was increased, and long branched chains of the LCB copolymers were phys. entangled with the chem. identical homopolymers or even participated in the crystallization of iPP and HDPE. Thanks to the in situ compatibilization strategy, the compatibility of iPP/HDPE was significantly improved.

A new member of low-dimensional structures with a high aspect ratio (LDHA) is introduced. For the first time, commodity polymer is processed into LDHA, which has long been stagnated by the lack of suitable processing techniques. The key to solve the current bottleneck is to overcome the trade-off between kinetic processability and thermodn. stability. These two factors are both highly determined by intermol. interaction level (IIL). Thus with a wide tuning range of IIL, ultrahigh mol. weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is selected and investigated to break through the trade-off. Polymeric LDHA preparation needs both thinning and stiffening. By focusing on one then the other sequentially, they are realized simultaneously. Thus the over sixty-year-old material is finally thinned down by seven orders of magnitude into a 65.5 nm thick and 0.64 m2 large lamellar-thin framework (LTF). LTF exhibits a series of exceptional properties such as over-95% transparency, and seven times higher specific strength referred to steel. For the first time, cryogenic electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) is utilized to observe commodity polymers directly. This new LDHA material is promising to expand the scale boundaries of both fundamental research and practical applications, not only for UHMWPE, but also for more commodity polymers to come.

An N-halamine precursor, namely, 2-amino-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-6-methylpyrimidin-4-one (AHM), was used as a chain extender in the preparation of a series of N-halamine polyurethane (PU) films, in order to also instill antibacterial properties. The mech. properties, thermodn. performance, and antimicrobial performance of the functionalized PU films were systematically studied. The results showed that the addition of AHM could improve the thermodn. and mech. properties of the developed PU films. Conducting tests in the presence of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as the model microorganisms revealed that prior to chlorination the antibacterial properties of the chlorinated PU-AHM-Cl films improved significantly relative to the analogus films. The excellent antibacterial properties and the overall superior performance of the PU-AHMCl films allow their potential application in microbiol. protection materials and related fields.

The enhanced ESCR is mainly ascribed to the decreased internal stress due to the low Tg and flexibility of PVB. On one hand, the low Tg and flexibility make PVB deformable during cooling to release the tension force of PC which results from the different cooling rate between surface and internal. On the other hand, the low Tg and flexibility of PVB can promote the motion of PC chains and decrease the viscosity of PC fusant to weaken the orientation force. Besides, without adding any compatibilizer, PC/PVB blends well maintain the high strength and toughness of PC due to the uniform dispersion of PVB and excellent mech. properties of PVB at room temperature We envision that this work offers an alternative facile method to prepare PC blends with high environmental stress crack resistance, high strength and high toughness and will promote the wide application of PC.

Di-Me fumarate (DMF), a fumaric acid with antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, is among the most commonly used oral therapies for relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS). Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) has been associated with several disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), including DMF in treating MS. We present detailed clin. characteristics of nine PML cases and show that the PML incidence in DMF-treated patients is 0.02 per 1000 patients. In addition to persistent severe lymphopenia, older age appears to be a potential risk for PML. However, younger patients without lymphopenia were also observed to develop PML. DMF-associated PML has occurred in patients with absolute lymphocyte counts (ALCs) above the guideline threshold, suggesting that changes in specific subsets might be more important than total ALC. Furthermore, since DMF has been found to decrease immune cell migration by decreasing the expression of adhesive mols., the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) immune profile may also be useful for assessing PML risk in DMF-treated patients. This review provides an up-to-date assessment of PML cases occurring in DMF-treated patients and discusses other potential considerations in light of our current understanding of DMFs mechanism of action on the immune system in the periphery and in the central nervous system (CNS).
