Recently, there is a growing interest in the use of microalga in various fields. Microalgae have properties such as rapid reproduction and high biomass accumulation, and under certain conditions, some are able to accumulate a large amount of oil. However, microalgae oil often contains more free fatty acids than the vegetable oil and is therefore unsuitable for biodiesel synthesis using alkaline catalysts. For this reason, some authors suggest the application of heterogeneous catalysis. A particular interest in the use of immobilized enzymes has developed. Other solid substances can also be used as heterogeneous catalysts are usually metal oxides, carbonates or zeolites. The use of these catalysts results in simpler biodiesel synthesis, especially purification processes, a cleaner end product and a less polluted environment. The molar ratio of alcohol to oil is lower during enzymatic transesterification, and more than 90% ester yield is obtained using a molar ratio of alcohol to oil of 3:1 to 4.5:1. The alcohols do not have a negative effect on the effectiveness of chemical catalysts, so it is possible to use alcohols in molar ratio from 4:1 to 12:1. The optimal temperature of enzymatic process is 30 degrees C-50 degrees C. An ester yield of more than 95% was obtained in 12-48 h. Using chemical catalysts, greater than a 95% yield of esters was obtained at higher temperatures in a shorter time. Material costs of enzymatic catalysis can be reduced by reusing the catalysts directly or after regeneration.

A Flexible and Self-Healable Gelled Polymer Electrolyte Based on a Dynamically Cross-Linked PVA Ionogel for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Ionogels combine the virtues of polymers and ionic liquids (ILs) and have greater potential for supercapacitors (SCs) than hydrogels and organic gels. Undoubtedly, the self-healing ability of ionogels dramatically improves the reliability of related SCs. Herein, we reported a dynamic diol-borate ester-cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) ionogel electrolyte for smart double-layer capacitors. The results indicated that 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EmimCl) could form a strong interaction with the hydroxy groups on PVA, thereby depressing the crystallization efficiently. The resultant ionogel exhibited an amorphous nature with excellent ionic conductivity up to 2.43 x 10(-3) S/cm, high flexibility, and 95% healing efficiency when the IL content was 90 vol %. It could be inferred from the fact that EmimCl acted not only as an ion provider to improve the ionic conductivity but also as a plasticizer to enhance the chain mobility and self-healing efficiency. Based on the unique properties of PVA-boric acid/EmimCl ionogels, a flexible and self-healable SC was assembled. The as-prepared SC delivered a specific capacitance of 90 F/g at 0.1 A/g and retained 98% capacitance after 3000 charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 2 A/g. More interestingly, it could tolerate physical bending and healing without significant performance deterioration. The present study provides a novel strategy to prepare self-healable ionogel electrolytes that can be applied to smart energy storage devices.

Assessment of Minerals, Bioactive Compounds, and Antioxidant Activity of Ten Moroccan Pomegranate Cultivars

The attractiveness of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is increasing worldwide among producers and consumers. Depending on its characteristics, the pomegranate may be intended for fresh consumption, for industrial processing, or for medical purposes. This study aims to assess the variability in terms of mineral content and biochemical properties of ten selected pomegranate cultivars grown in the center of Morocco to better know their fruit potential. Mineral composition, organic acids, total polyphenols, anthocyanins content, individual phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity were determined in pomegranate juices. Results showed significant differences between cultivars. The sour cultivar Lhamdha is rich in organic acids, gallagyl esters, and ellagitannins and showed high antioxidant activity. It could therefore be used as a source for nutraceutical substances. The cultivar Sefri of Lalla Takerkoust showed important content of mineral elements, especially iodine (I), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), and silver (Ag). The cultivars Sefri of Ouled Abdellah, Sefri of Beni Meskine, Lahmer, and Marrakchia are suitable for production of fresh pomegranate juice with high potential of health benefits. In fact, they are rich in anthocyanins, polyphenols, and oxalic and ascorbic acids and they presented high antioxidant activity. While the cultivars Sefri of Sour Laaz, Sefri of Tmassine, Sefri of Sidi Abdellah, and Bzeq Tir could be intended for fresh fruit consumption. Cluster analysis has revealed the divergence of cultivars with the same appellation Sefri confirming the problem of homonymy or synonymy in the pomegranate cultivars appellation. This study clearly demonstrates the nutritional and functional potential of the studied cultivars and the importance of their valorisation, especially for food and pharmaceutical industries.

A systematic review of the biodistribution of biomimetic high-density lipoproteins in mice

For the past two decades, biomimetic high-density lipoproteins (b-HDL) have been used for various drug delivery applications. The b-HDL mimic the endogenous HDL, and therefore possess many attractive features for drug delivery, including high biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to transport and deliver their cargo (e.g. drugs and/or imaging agents) to specific cells and tissues that are recognized by HDL. The b-HDL designs reported in the literature often differ in size, shape, composition, and type of incorporated cargo. However, there exists only limited insight into how the b-HDL design dictates their biodistribution. To fill this gap, we conducted a comprehensive systematic literature search of biodistribution studies using various designs of apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I)-based b-HDL (i.e. b-HDL with apoA-I, apoA-I mutants, or apoA-I mimicking peptides). We carefully screened 679 papers (search hits) for b-HDL biodistribution studies in mice, and ended up with 24 relevant biodistribution profiles that we compared according to b-HDL design. We show similarities between b-HDL biodistribution studies irrespectively of the b-HDL design, whereas the biodistribution of the b-HDL components (lipids and scaffold) differ significantly. The b-HDL lipids primarily accumulate in liver, while the b-HDL scaffold primarily accumulates in the kidney. Furthermore, both b-HDL lipids and scaffold accumulate well in the tumor tissue in tumor-bearing mice. Finally, we present essential considerations and strategies for b-HDL labeling, and discuss how the b-HDL biodistribution can be tuned through particle design and administration route. Our metaanalysis and discussions provide a detailed overview of the fate of b-HDL in mice that is highly relevant when applying b-HDL for drug delivery or in vivo imaging applications.
