Unusual Nanostructured Morphologies Enabled by Interpolyelectrolyte Complexation of Polyions Bearing Incompatible Nonionic Segments

The nanostructures of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) fabricated from a series of rationally designed oppositely charged amphiphilic random copolymers with variable comonomer compositions were studied experimentally in 50:50 (v/v) methanol-H2O mixtures through morpho- logical investigations. Both polycationic [poly(alanine methacryloyloxyethyl ester-co-styrene), P1-P4] and polyanionic [poly(acrylic acid-co-methyl acrylate), P1′-P4′] electrolytes were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) copolymerization while maintaining the mole fractions of charge-bearing groups within the range of 50-90%. Unlike polyanions, polycations showed well pronounced pH-responsive behavior owing to pH-induced protonation/deprotonation phenomena of pendant quaternary ammonium groups. On account of this fact, PEC formation with concomitant microphase separation was realized at pH 5.0 when all obtained compositions of both polycations and polyanions were totally soluble. Fine tuning of alanine-derived cationic and anionic acrylic acid compositions confers uncommon morphologies revealed by electron microscopic observations. Intriguingly, a string-of-beads like morphology was observed for PECs prepared with 50 and 60% charged ratios, whereas spherical micelles and vesicles were formed in the case of 70 and 90% ratios, respectively, attributed to the strength of electrostatic interaction and incompatibility of nonionic segments. These fascinating morphologies were further corroborated by computer simulations of two oppositely charged chains within a coarse-grained approach. A diagram of PEC morphologies was constructed depending on the hydrophobic/hydrophilic composition of polyions, fraction of ion-containing groups, and the strength of electrostatic interactions. Observation of these unique morphologies from a single pair of a polyelectrolyte system is scarcely reported in the literature.

Sustainable valorization of paper mill sludge into cellulose nanofibrils and cellulose nanopaper

As a kind of agro-industrial wastes, paper mill sludge (PMS) has posed serious environmental and economic challenges for disposal due to the more stringent regulations and diminishing land availability in recent years. The present study is aimed at providing a sustainable approach to efficiently convert PMS to cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and cellulose nanopaper (CNP) by formic acid (FA) hydrolysis pretreatment and the followed micro fluidization. It is found that FA hydrolysis (4-6 h) could swell and shorten PMS fibers, and only two-pass microfluidization is sufficient to get uniform CNFs from the collected cellulose residual. Results indicate that the obtained CNFs show high thermal stability and crystallinity index, surface functionality (ester groups), as well as a high yield of over 75 wt.%. Notably, more than 90 % FA can be recovered and the hydrolyzed sugars could be potentially used to produce platform chemicals (e.g. lactic acid, furfural). Finally, transparent CNP is prepared from the CNFs suspension via a simple vacuum filtration technique. The resultant CNP shows good mechanical properties with the maximum tensile strength and toughness of 106.4 MPa and 6.62 MJ/m(3), respectively. Therefore, the current work provides a green and sustainable method to valorize PMS for the production of valuable CNFs and CNP.

Bioactivity Guided Investigation of Caryota mitis & Caryota urens Chemopreventive Activity via In Vitro and In Silico Studies

The study highlights for the first time the potential role of Caryota mitis and Caryota urens (family Arecaceae) in cancer chemoprevention as NQO1 enzyme inducers. First comparative GC/MS analysis of both species’ petroleum ether leaf extracts was conducted to reveal for 35 vs 34 compounds in C. mitis and C. urens unsaponifiable matter, respectively, and 29 vs 15 fatty acids as methyl esters, respectively. Isolation attempts from the active C. urens extract resulted in the identification of five compounds i.e. oleanolic acid (T1), ursolic acid (T2), alpha-tocopherol (T3), palmitic and stearic acids (T4 & T5) using different spectroscopic techniques; where T1 and T3 are first time to be identified in C. urens. Assessment of the isolated compounds’ chemopreventive activity was conducted via in silico molecular modeling against KEAP-1-Nrf2 complex involved in of NQO1 where T1, T2 and T3 showed promising docking score of -7.7,-7.9 and -7.05 kcal/mol, respectively, compared to -8.2 kcal/mol for 4′-bromoflavone as a positive control.

Effect of Different Ionic Surfactants on the Structural, Photophysical, and Morphological Properties of Water-Based P3HT:PCBM Nanoparticle Dispersions and Films

Aqueous suspensions of composite nanoparticles of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl C-61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) are fabricated by miniemulsion method using three different ionic surfactants. The aim is to study how the length and conformation of the surfactants alkyl chains affect the properties of the nanoparticles. While the morphology and dimensions of the nanoparticles are similar, UV-vis spectroscopy evidences that the internal aggregation and ordering of the P3HT chains varies within the three nanoparticle formulations. The surfactant with branched alkyl chains promote the highest degree of ordering of P3HT chains in the nanoparticles (leading to increased conjugation length). In contrast, the lowest ordering is found for the nanoparticles with the surfactant having the shortest linear alkyl chain. The optical/structural properties of nanoparticles are partially retained in the films. Besides, the surfactant with branched alkyl chains favors the strongest coalescence of nanoparticles in the thin film, promoting a further ordering of the polymeric chains in the most external shell of the nanoparticles as evidenced by steady-state and time-resolved UV-vis spectroscopy and confocal fluorescence microscopy. These findings might guide the engineering of new surfactants for composite nanoparticles for optoelectronic applications.
