Production of Pure Biofuel and Some Chemicals From Waste Soap Stock

The non-esculent soap stock oil was employed for producing some rare chemicals, along with certain fractions of biofuels akin to those engendered from petroleum sources. This inexpensive feed stock was hydrotreated using NiMo/Al2O3 in the sulfided form as a catalyst. The applied process was accomplished in a continuous micro-reactor, under high pressure of hydrogen. The hydroprocessed oil was treated chemically for separating its liquid hydrocarbons from the fatty acid constituents. The fatty acids were esterified to be transformed to the corresponding methyl ester. The products were identified via the gas chromatographic technique. The results reflect that the acquired hydrocarbons are clean and free from oxygenated compounds, in addition to sulfur, which has an adverse impact on the environment and on the performance of engines, so it can be used as a high – grade biofuel and also as pure chemicals. Furthermore, the prepared fatty acids are characterized by their low molecular weight, with carbon numbers in the range of C-5 to C-22, including those with odd carbon numbers that regarded as very rare components in nature. Hence this work offers the ability for obtainment precious products from a cheap material.

Assessment of plastic ingestion by pole-caught pelagic predatory fish from O’ahu, Hawai’i

Although the frequency of occurrence of plastic ingestion in the large-sized dolphinfish and tunas taken by the Hawai’i longline fishery is very low (frequency of occurrence < 5% of sampled individuals), the ingestion of plastic in smaller-sized specimens caught with pole-and-line gear by commercial and recreational fishers has not been investigated. This study examined ingestion of >0.25 mm marine plastic debris (MPD) by four predatory fish species caught by commercial fishers around the Main Hawaiian Islands, and documented ingestion in three species: 85.7% of albacore tuna (n = 7), 40.0% of skipjack tuna (n = 10) and 12.5% of dolphinfish (n = 8). Yellowfin tuna (n = 10) did not contain any MPD, probably owing to the high proportion of empty stomachs (60%). For skipjack tuna, the frequency of occurrence of MPD ingestion was significantly higher for the smaller-sized specimens caught with pole-and-line (40%), compared with the larger-sized specimens caught with longlines (0%). For dolphinfish, the frequency of occurrence of MPD ingestion was similar for the similar-sized specimens caught with pole-and-line and with longlines. The ingested MPD items were micro-meso plastics, between 1 and 25 mm. While most ingested items were fragments, albacore also ingested line and skipjack also ingested sheets. The predatory fishes ingested light MPD items that float in sea water, but there were species-specific differences in their polymer composition: albacore contained more polypropylene and polyethylene, and skipjack contained more elastomers, characterized by a high percentage of ester plasticizers. Altogether, these results suggest that albacore and skipjack tunas ingest plastic of different types and polymers. Yet more research is needed to understand how differences in vertical distribution, foraging ecology and diet influence the MPD sampled by these predatory fish species.

Multi-Modal Chiral Superstructures in Self-Assembled Anthracene-Terminal Amino Acids with Predictable and Adjustable Chiroptical Activities and Color Evolution

Deep understanding of structure-property relationship between packing of chiral building units and their chiroptical behaviors would significantly facilitate the rational design and fabrication of the emerging chiroptical materials such as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emissive materials. In this paper, we unveil the universal existence of supramolecular tilt helical superstructures in self-assembled pi-conjugated amino acid derivatives. A series of coded amino acid methyl esters were conjugated to anthracene segments at N-terminus, which afforded 2(1) and 3(1) symmetry supramolecular tilt chirality in solid-states. Helical assemblies enabled diversified Cotton effects and CPL performances, which were in accordance with the tilted chirality between anthracene segments. Such correlation shows fine universality, whereby the chiroptical prediction could be realized. Furthermore, on top of charge-transfer complexation, manipulation of CPL emission colors and handedness were realized.

Rh-Catalyzed Base-Free Decarbonylative Borylation of Twisted Amides

We report the rhodium-catalyzed base-free decarbonylative borylation of twisted amides. The synthesis of versatile arylboronate esters from aryl twisted amides is achieved via decarbonylative rhodium(I) catalysis and highly selective N-C(O) insertion. The method is notable for a very practical, additive-free Rh(I) catalyst system. The method shows broad functional group tolerance and excellent substrate scope, including site-selective decarbonylative borylation/Heck cross-coupling via divergent N-C/C-Br cleavage and late-stage pharmaceutical borylation.

A Comparison of Collection Methods for Microbial Volatiles

Recently, there has been an increase in the number of reports that highlight the role of microbes and their volatile metabolites in interactions with plants and insects, including interactions which may benefit agricultural production. Accurate and reproducible volatile collection is crucial to investigations of chemical-mediated communication between organisms. Accordingly, accurate detection of volatiles emitted from microbe-inoculated media is a research priority. Though numerous classes of volatile organic compounds are emitted from plants, insects, and microbes, emissions from microbes typically contain polar compounds of high volatility. Therefore, commonly used plant or insect volatile collection techniques may not provide an accurate representation of microbe-specific volatile profiles. Here, we present and compare the volatile data derived via three solventless collection techniques: direct headspace injection, solid-phase microextraction (SPME), and active sampling with a sorptive matrix blend specifically designed to prevent collection filter breakthrough of VOCs (solid-phase extraction, SPE). These methods were applied to a synthetic floral nectar media containing a nectar-inhabiting yeast, Metschnikowia reukaufii, and sunflower (Helianthus annus) pollen. The yeast contributed alcohols, ketones, and esters, and the pollen provided terpenoids. Direct headspace injections were not effective, and the resultant chromatography was poor despite the use of on-column cryofocusing. SPME and SPE detected a similar number of volatiles, but with varying relative abundances. SPE collected a greater abundance of microbial volatiles than SPME, a difference driven by high ethanol capture in SPE. Both SPE and SPME are appropriate for analysis of microbial volatiles, though the sorbent type and amount, and other collection parameters should be further evaluated for each studied system.

Generation of Sulfonylated Tetrazoles through an Iron-Catalyzed Multicomponent Reaction Involving Sulfur Dioxide

As a privileged motif, tetrazoles can be widely found in pharmaceuticals and materials science. Herein, a five-component reaction of cycloketone oxime esters, alkynes, DABCO center dot(SO2)(2), and two molecules of trimethylsilyl azide under iron catalysis is developed, giving rise to a range of cyano-containing sulfonylated tetrazoles in moderate to good yields. This multicomponent reaction exhibits excellent selectivity and enables the formation of multiple new chemical bonds in one pot. A possible mechanism involving azidosulfonylation of alkynes, C-C bond cleavage of both cycloketone oxime esters and alkynes, and [3 + 2] cycloaddition of trimethylsilyl azide and the nitrilium cation intermediate is proposed. Additionally, the potential of terminal alkynes acting as powerful synthons for the synthesis of tetrazoles in a radical initiated process is demonstrated for the first time.

Design and Experiment of Polyimide/Ti Wire Composite with the Interface Chemically Grafted through Carbon Nanotubes

Herein, an efficient method is proposed to develop polyimide (PI)/titanium (Ti) wire composite with the interface chemically grafted through carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In order to reduce the research cost and blindness, nine strategies are designed herein to improve the interface compatibility of PI/Ti by using the simulation approach, and then an ideal solution is obtained to prepare the new composite material. The PI/Ti simulation model with interface grafted using different CNTs functionalized through ester and amide bonds is established. It is found that the interface cohesive energy can be improved by 276.7% by grafting -COOH@MWCNTs through ester bond. Then, based on the simulation results, the PI/Ti wire composite with the interface chemically grafted through -COOH@MWCNTs is prepared successfully, which exhibits an increase of 243.3% in interface shear strength (IFSS). Furthermore, the result also indicates that when the orientation of grafted -COOH@MWCNTs is perpendicular to the Ti surface, its interface performance achieves the maximum with an IFSS increase of 301.3%. This method can also be used to improving the interface performance of Ti/Cf/polymerized monomer reactant (PMR) polyimide hybrid composite laminates (also known as TiGr).

Corrosion-Resistant Cross-Linked Cyanate Ester Coatings Doped by Graphene Oxide for Use in High-Temperature Marine Environments

Organic coatings are widely used to protect metals from corrosion in high-temperature marine environments. Compared with inorganic or metal coatings, organic coatings exhibit favorable properties, such as a reasonable cost, adequate flexibility, and easy fabrication. However, most organic coatings are limited to relatively short protection times and thus fail to meet the increasing demands for industrial applications. In this paper, graphene oxide (GO) was added to cyanate ester (CE) coatings as a corrosion inhibitive filler. Electrochemical analysis shows that a 3 wt % GO/CE coating has favorable corrosion protection properties with a low-frequency resistance higher than 10(6) Omega cm(2) and a corrosion rate of 632.9 x 10(-6) mm per year after 1320 h of immersion in a high-temperature marine environment. Top-view and cross-sectional SEM images identify the electrochemical results. Furthermore, chemical analyses by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrate that hydroxyl groups of GO can react with cyanate groups, and therefore, a robust cross-linked structure was formed in the GO/CE coating. The synergistic effect of the physical shielding of GO and the robust cross-linked structure makes the GO/CE coating a promising choice for corrosion protection of steel in high-temperature marine environments. Our study also illustrates a novel method for preparing other chemically cross-linked composite coatings.

Stereocontrolled Total Synthesis of (-)-Isocelorbicol and Its Elaboration to Natural Dihydro-beta-agarofuran Esters

The first total synthesis of four naturally occurring dihydro-beta-agarofuran esters has been accomplished via a highly stereocontrolled 14-step access to their common core triol, (-)-isocelorbicol. A semipinacol rearrangement of an epoxy alcohol to install a quaternary carbon, diastereoselective conjugate reduction of a spirocyclic butenolide for the establishment of a methyl-bearing chiral center, and ring-closing metathesis to construct the decalin ring system were exploited as the key steps for the high-yielding synthesis of (-)-isocelorbicol.

Soil microbiomes mediate degradation of vinyl ester-based polymer composites

Polymer composites are attractive for structural applications in the built environment due to their lightweight and high strength properties but suffer from degradation due to environmental factors. While abiotic factors like temperature, moisture, and ultraviolet light are well studied, little is known about the impacts of naturally occurring microbial communities on their structural integrity. Here we apply complementary time-series multi-omics of biofilms growing on polymer composites and materials characterization to elucidate the processes driving their degradation. We measured a reduction in mechanical properties due to biologically driven molecular chain breakage of esters and reconstructed 121 microbial genomes to describe microbial diversity and pathways associated with polymer composite degradation. The polymer composite microbiome is dominated by four bacterial groups including the Candidate Phyla Radiation that possess pathways for breakdown of acrylate, esters, and bisphenol, abundant in composites. We provide a foundation for understanding interactions of next-generation structural materials with their natural environment that can predict their durability and drive future designs. The effect of microbial communities on the degradation of polymer composites has not been widely studied. Here, a multi-omics and materials characterization approach reveals the time-dependent effect of naturally occurring microbes on the degradation of vinyl ester composites.
