In this work, highly fluorinated acrylate emulsions with reliable stability emulsified by protonated octadecylamine were successfully synthesized. With appropriate protonation, the obtained emulsion showed high monomer conversions up to 90.2% and ultralow surface energy. The ultralow-surface-energy coatings were fabricated via surface enrichment of abundant fluorine and replacing hydrophilic amino groups with hydrophobic groups through the Michael addition reaction. Superhydrophobic and self-cleaning surfaces were prepared on porous substrates through dip coating. When fabricated on porous glass fiber nonwoven mats, surfaces coated with enriching fluorinated side chains and few hydrophilic groups showed remarkable superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle more than 150° and a low sliding contact angle of 4.7°. The usage of fluorinated emulsions was sharply reduced due to the addition of perfluorinated acrylate. Moreover, the Michael acceptors were alternative such as perfluorinaed acrylates, long aliphatic acrylates and crosslinking acrylates, displaying superior hydrophobicity and waterproof properties. All the results conclusively indicated that this practical modified method was promising for potential applications of hydrophobic modifications. Robust air-stable cyclometalated π-allyliridium C,O-benzoates modified by (S)-tol-BINAP catalyze the reaction of secondary aliphatic amines with racemic alkyl-substituted allylic acetates to furnish products of allylic amination with high levels of enantioselectivity. Complete branched regioselectivities were observed despite the formation of more highly substituted C-N bonds.

A novel fabrication method is developed for the preparation of superhydrophobic surfaces. The procedure uses focal conic structures of semi-fluorinated smectic liquid crystals (LCs) whose periodic toric focal conic domains (TFCDs) are prepared on a surface modified substrate. Reactive ion etching (RIE) on the periodic TFCD surface leads to a superhydrophobic surface with a water contact angle of ∼160° and a sliding angle of ∼2° for a 10 μL water droplet. The results show that this phenomenon is due to the development of a dual-scale surface roughness arising from the nanoscale protuberance caused by applying the RIE process to the top of the microscale TFCD arrays. The unique surface behavior is further verified by demonstrating that RIE on a flat lamellar liquid crystal film, in which the director is aligned parallel with surface, results in a relatively low hydrophobicity as compared to when periodic TFCDs are subjected to REI. The observations made in this publication suggest that a new approach exists for selecting potential candidates of superhydrophic surface formation based on spontaneous self-assembly in smectic liquid-crystalline materials.

We have developed highly periodic patterns with sub-micrometer features over large-areas using toric focal conic domains (TFCDs) originated from smectic liquid crystal (LC) as a new self-assembling building block. TFCDs are accomplished by precisely controlling the surface and interfacial properties of smectic LC. In order to apply the smectic liquid crystal defect arrays in soft lithog., the hexagonal arrays of domain patterns are used as molds for UV curable polymers, thereby providing LC defect stamps with high spatial resolution over large areas. Our method was further utilized to transfer patterns with sub-micrometer features from the polymer stamp surface to a secondary surface by microcontact printing (μ-CP). Accordingly, we show that such LC materials can be very strong candidates for the periodic templates, compared to other soft-building blocks such as block copolymers, colloids and surfactants. We anticipate our finding be a starting point for more sophisticated lithog. applications based on liquid crystalline materials.

We investigate the energy transfer of a highly ordered π-conjugated liquid crystalline mol. containing two chromophores of biphenyl and pyrene moiety, in which the mol. was prepared by esterification of fluorinated biphenyl compound and 1-pyrenebutanol. DSC, POM and XRD results show that this mol. forms a highly ordered smectic liquid crystalline mesophase, in which the π-conjugated mol. was strongly packed together over large-areas. We show that the liquid crystalline bi-chromophoric systems with highly ordered structure exhibit the energy hopping and transfer to the chromophore with the energetically lowest S1 state. From the single-mol. spectroscopy of the biphenyl and pyrene chromophore in solution, we show an intramol. energy transfer from biphenyl to pyrene moieties. In solid thin film, highly ordered structure of the liquid crystal plays a significant role in the formation of the excimer and perfect energy transfer between the chromophores.

We figured out periodic undulations of lamellae “zigzags” in liquid crystals under confinement by glass and patterned silicon hybrid cell, but in the absence of applied fields. The optical and internal structures of zigzags have been investigated from mesoscopic scale to mol. level by convoluting real and reciprocal space probes, such as polarized light microscopy, SEM, and microbeam x-ray diffraction. The homeotropic anchoring happens at air/liquid crystal, while planar one appears at glass or patterned silicon surfaces. The wetting and displacement of lamellae near the glass surface give rise to tilting and bending in the stacking of lamellae. This can provide a solution for the origin of periodic zigzags: asym. strain exerted to lamellae at two-dimensional glass surface and one-dimensional-like pattern. This can give a hint for potential photonic applications such as optical gratings and modulators due to its high periodicity.

Polystyrene was prepared by living radical polymerization in homogeneous solution using 4 organic sulfide initiator-transfer agent-terminators (photoiniferters). styrene  [100-42-5] Photopolymd, with diphenyl disulfide (I) [882-33-7], tetraethylthiuram disulfide  [97-77-8], benzyl diethyldithiocarbamate  [3052-61-7] and 2-phenylethyl diethyldithiocarbamate  [3052-60-6] gave polymers with yields and average-mol. weights increased as a function of the reaction time. These polymerizations proceeded via a living radical mechanism. When these photoiniferters except I were used, the propagating polymer chain end was always the Et2NCSS group, which can further photodissoc. into a reactive propagating radical and a less reactive small radical Et2NCSS· in order to result in successive insertion of monomer mols. into the dissociated bond.

A new method involving the benzannulation of aromatic enals ArCH=CHCHO (Ar = C6H5, 2-furyl, 1-naphthyl, etc.) and two alkyl propiolate mols. CHCC(O)2R (R = Me, Et, t-Bu) has been developed as a powerful route to biaryl aldehydes I simply via the promotion of di-Me amine. The benzannulation process in the absence of an oxidant additive tolerates successfully the formyl group in the enal component, leading to a straightforward one-step synthesis of biaryl and atropisomeric aldehydes I. An enamine activation based on the aza-Michael addition of di-Me amine to the propiolate and the amine elimination-based generation of cyclohexadiene intermediate constitute the major factors enabling the titled reactions.
