Established electrodecarboxylative etherification protocols are based on Hofer-Moest-type reaction pathways. An oxidative decarboxylation gives rise to radicals, which are further oxidised to carbocations. This is possible only for benzylic or otherwise stabilised substrates. Here, we report the electrodecarboxylative radical-radical coupling of lithium alkylcarboxylates with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole at platinum electrodes in methanol/pyridine to afford alkyl benzotriazole ethers. The substrate scope of this electrochemical radical coupling extends to primary and secondary alkylcarboxylates. The benzotriazole products easily undergo reductive cleavage to the alcohols. They can also serve as synthetic hubs to access a wide variety of functional groups. This reaction prototype demonstrates that electrodecarboxylative C-O bond formation can be taken beyond the intrinsic substrate limitations of Hofer-Moest mechanisms.

The N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed beta-addition of enals to 3-alkylenyloxindoles was developed. All of the beta-aryl, beta-alkenyl and beta-alkyl enals worked well for the reaction to give the corresponding 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles bearing contiguous all-carbon quaternary and tertiary stereocenters in good yields with moderate to high diastereoselectivities and excellent enantioselectivities.

The paper describes synthesis of a novel mesoporous and magnetically regenerated heterogeneous nanocatalyst with high catalytic activity. The synthesis strategy includes a one-step polycondensation reaction of melamine, formaldehyde and FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O in a simple and sustainable manner and followed by immobilization of Pd(II) on it. Formation and properties of nanocomposite were characterized by different techniques; the results were illustrated good surface area and a well-defined mesopore structure. Also the palladium-catalyzed C-C bond formation between aryl halides and olefins was selected to survey the activity of the synthesized nanocatalyst. Central Composite Design (CCD) strategy was used to predict the optimum synthesis conditions and identify the remarkable and effective factors including temperature, period of the reaction and amount of catalyst. These results were also verified experimentally. In order to minimize systematic error, the experimental runs as a randomized fashion were accomplished.

Isocyanates are useful building blocks for the synthesis of amides, although their widespread use has been limited by their high reactivity, which often results in poor functional group tolerance and a propensity to oligomerize. Herein, a rhodium-catalyzed synthesis of amides is described coupling boroxines with blocked (masked) isocyanates. The success of the reaction hinges on the ability to form both the isocyanate and the organorhodium intermediates in situ. Relying on masked isocyanate precursors and on the high reactivity of the organorhodium intermediate results in broad functional group tolerance, including protic nucleophilic groups such as amines, anilines, and alcohols.

A manganese-catalyzed oxidative kinetic resolution of cyclic benzylic ethers through asymmetric C(sp(3))-H oxidation is reported. The practical approach is applicable to a wide range of 1,3-dihydroisobenzofurans bearing diverse functional groups and substituent patterns at the alpha position with extremely efficient enantiodiscrimination. The generality of the strategy was further demonstrated by efficient oxidative kinetic resolution of another type of five-membered cyclic benzylic ether, 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans, and six-membered 6H-benzo[c]chromenes. Direct late-stage oxidative kinetic resolution of bioactive molecules that are otherwise difficult to access was further explored.

Bis-N-heterocycle-stabilized lambda(3)-iodanes (BNHIs) based on azoles are introduced as novel structural motifs in hypervalent iodine chemistry. A performance test in a variety of benchmark reactions including sulfoxidations and phenol dearomatizations revealed a bis-N-bound pyrazole substituted BNHI as the most reactive derivative. The presence of different aldehydes is found to have a significant influence on the catalytic performance when using PN(H)P type ligands for dehydrogenation of alcohols. Accordingly, hybrid multi-dentate ligands were discovered based on an oxygen-transfer alkylation of PNP ligands by aldehydes. The relevant Ru-PNN(PO) system provided the desired unsymmetrical esters in good yields via acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols. Hydrogen bonding interactions between the phosphine oxide moieties and alcohol substrates likely assisted the observed high chemoselectivity.
