A conceptionally novel nucleophilic substitution approach to synthetically important alkyl bromides is presented. Using molecular bromine (Br-2), readily available secondary benzyl and tertiary alkyl phenyl sulphides are converted into the corresponding bromides under exceptionally mild, acid- and base-free reaction conditions. This simple transformation allows the isolation of elimination sensitive benzylic beta-bromo carbonyl and nitrile compounds in mostly high yields and purities. Remarkably, protic functionalities such as acids and alcohols are tolerated. Enantioenriched benzylic beta-sulphido esters, readily prepared by asymmetric sulpha-Michael addition, produce the corresponding inverted bromides with high stereoselectivities, approaching complete enantiospecificity at -40 degrees C. Significantly, the reported benzylic beta-bromo esters can be stored without racemisation for prolonged periods at -20 degrees C. Their synthetic potential was demonstrated by the one-pot preparation of gamma-azido alcohol (S)-5 in 90% ee. NMR studies revealed an initial formation of a sulphide bromine adduct, which in turn is in equilibrium with a postulated dibromosulphurane intermediate that undergoes C-Br bond formation.

Regioselectivity for intramolecular Diels-Alder (IMDA) reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones that were formed by oxidation of 2-alkenylphenols with lead tetraacetate in acetic acid were studied. Bridged regioselectivity was observed in the IMDA reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones having a dienophile part which could conjugate with an aromatic group. Bridged seven-and eight-membered rings and bicyclo[2.2.2]octane skeletons were constructed by the present IMDA reactions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that conjugation of the dienophile with neighboring aromatic groups lowered the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gap and preceded bridged [4 + 2] adducts.

In the presented work, five bio-based and bio-degradable cyclic esters, i.e. lactones, have been investigated as possible phase change materials for applications in latent heat storage systems. Commercial natural lactones such as epsilon-caprolactone and gamma-valerolactone were easily purchased through chemical suppliers, while 1,2-campholide, oxa-adamantanone and dibenzochromen-6-one were synthesized through Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The compounds were characterized with respect to attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, in order to confirm their chemical structures and identity. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to measure the phase change temperatures, enthalpies of fusion, degradation temperatures, as well to estimate the degree of supercooling. The lactones showed a wide range of phase change temperatures from -40 degrees C to 290 degrees C, making them a high interest for both low and high temperature latent heat storage applications, given the lack of organic phase change materials covering phase change temperature ranges below 0 degrees C and above 80 degrees C. However, low enthalpies of fusion, high degrees of supercooling and thermal degradations at low temperatures were registered for all samples, rendering them unsuitable as phase change materials.

Herein we report the first example of an on-water enantiospecific synthesis of alkyl bromides. This procedure allowed the conversion of secondary activated alkyl sulphides to benzylic alkyl bromides, which were obtained in 80-99% yields. The reaction carried out on enantio-pure sulphides provided the corresponding bromides in high yields and enantioselectivity (up to 92% ee; 94% es) at room temperature. The on-water conditions reduced significantly the reaction times compared to similar procedures run in organic media. The condition identified made use of no solvent, required no temperature control and produced a smooth organic phase easily separated for further synthetic use on a multigram-scale without the need for any organic extraction. Therefore, the present constitutes the most operationally simple and environmentally benign approach to a class of much sought organic intermediates.

The Pd-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes using water as a promoter has been scarcely reported before. Herein, water instead of Bronsted/Lewis acid was found to effectively improve the catalytic performance of Pd (MeCN)(2)Cl-2-Xantphos system for alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes. Under the optimal conditions, the best yield of 97% was obtained for the target products (methyl 3-phenylpropanoate and methyl 2-phenylpropanoate) with L/B of 4.3 and TON of 192. With the involvement of water, Pd(MeCN)(2)Cl-2-Xantphos system also exhibited the moderate to good generality to alkoxycarbonylation of different kinds of alkenes with alcohols. The in situ high pressure FT-IR analysis verified that water played an important role in promoting formation and stability of Pd-H active species which was responsible for the efficient alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes. In addition, the ligand effect of Xantphos on this reaction was discussed.

We report the synthesis of magnetically separable Fe3O4@Silica-Threonine-Pd-0 magnetic nanoparticles with a core-shell structure. After synthesis of Fe3O4@Silica, threonine as an efficient stabilizer/ligand was bonded to the surface of Fe3O4@Silica. Then, palladium nanoparticles were generated on the threonine-modified catalyst. The threonine stabilizer helps to generate palladium nanoparticles of small size (less than 4 nm) with high dispersity and uniformity. Magnetically separable Fe3O4@Silica-Threonine-Pd-0 nanocatalyst was fully characterized using various techniques. This nanocatalyst efficiently catalysed the Heck cross-coupling reaction of a variety of substrates in water medium as a green, safe and inexpensive solvent at 80 degrees C. The Fe3O4@Silica-Threonine-Pd-0 catalyst was used for at least eight successful consecutive runs with palladium leaching of only 0.05%.

This report describes the synthesis of five new colorful 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts, a largely unexplored structural unit. These rare compounds are benzannulated structural derivatives of the well-known flavylium cations found widespread in natural pigments. These new dyes are directly compared to three previously synthesized 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts as well as eight colorful isomeric 9-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation, or 9-arylxanthylium, salts. The 9-arylxanthylium unit is commonly found in the biologically important rhodamine and rosamine dyes, yet six of the analogs presented in this study were either previously unreported or not isolated. The visual and spectroscopic properties of all 16 compounds were analyzed as a function of the structural differences between the compounds. All compounds displayed reversible halochromism in organic solution, displaying bright colors under acidic conditions and becoming colorless under basic conditions. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Herein we report the photo- and electrochemical characterization of pyrimidopteridine N-oxide-based heterocycles. The potential of their application as organic photoredox catalysts is showcased in the photomediated contra-thermodynamic E -> Z isomerization of cinnamic acid derivatives and oxidative cyclization of 2-phenyl benzoic acid to benzocoumarin using molecular oxygen as a mild oxidant. In this study, the surface of magnetic MCM-41 nanoparticles (MCM-41/Fe3O4) was modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and further, 1-methyl imidazole was anchored on their surface using cyanuric chloride as a linker. Then, Pd2+ ions were immobilized on the surface of the modified MCM-41/Fe3O4 (Pd-imi-CC@MCM-41/Fe3O4), and its application was studied as a magnetically recyclable nanocatalyst in carbon-carbon coupling reactions between a wide range of aryl halides and butyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, phenylboronic acid, or 3,4-difluorophenylboronic acid under the conditions of a phosphine-free ligand and an air atmosphere. This catalyst has the advantages of both the Fe3O4 nanoparticles and mesoporous MCM-41. The structure of the catalyst was characterized via TEM, SEM, EDS, WDX, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, XRD, TGA, FT-IR, and AAS. Also, the recovered catalyst was characterized via SEM, AAS and FT-IR. All the products from the carbon-carbon coupling reaction were obtained with excellent yields and high TON and TOF values, which indicate the high efficiency and activity of this catalyst. The selectivity of this catalyst was studied with various aryl halides bearing different functional groups. Furthermore, the heterogeneity and stability of Pd-imi-CC@MCM-41/Fe3O4 was studied via AAS, and leaching and poisoning tests. According to the results, this heterogeneous catalyst can be reused several times.
