The potential of using chiral bicyclic NHC ligands that exhibit modularity was investigated in the Cu-catalyzed asymmetric borylation reaction of alpha,beta-unsaturated esters. After screening for ligands and optimization of the reaction conditions, the corresponding products were afforded with good enantioselectivities (up to 85% ee).

The utility of thionoester as a 1,2-dipolarophile for [4+2] cycloaddition with cyclobutanones is described. The [4+2] cycloaddition reaction provided tetrahydrothiopyran, which is found in biologically active natural products, in high yield with high diastereoselectivity by using readily available TiCl4. This synthetic method was applicable to a wide range of thionoesters and cyclobutanones. The ketone and S,O-ketal functionalities of the product could be reduced with excellent diastereoselectivity. Furthermore, the C-O bond was transformed into a C-C bond, affording contiguous tetrasubstituted carbon centers.

In this study, the unique capacity of bifunctional BrOnsted bases to generate alpha-branched ketone dienolates and control both site- and stereoselectivity of their addition reactions to representative classes of carbon electrophiles (i.e., vinyl sulfones, nitroolefins, formaldehyde) is documented. We demonstrate that by using selected chiral tertiary amine/squaramide catalysts, the reactions of beta,gamma-unsaturated cycloalkanones proceed through the dienolate C alpha almost exclusively and provide all-carbon quaternary cyclic ketone adducts in good yields with very high enantioselectivities. A minor amount (<5%) of gamma-addition is observed when nitroolefins are used as electrophiles. The parent acyclic ketone dienolates proved to be less reactive under these conditions, and thus still constitute a challenging class of substrates. Quantum chemical calculations correctly predict these differences in reactivity and explain the observed site-specificity and enantioselectivity. COA of Formula: C10H11NO4. A series of palladium(H) complexes incorporating l-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholenes as the P-ligands were prepared from phospholene oxides by deoxygenation followed by complexation with PdCl2(PhCN)(2). The two 1-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholene ligands were trans position to each other in the Pd(II)-complexes. As the ligands contain a P-stereogenic center, the Pd-complexes were obtained as a 1:1 mixture of two stereoisomers, the homochiral (R,R and S,S) and the meso (R,S) forms, when racemic starting materials were used. An optically active Pd-complex containing (R)-1-propyl-3-phospholene ligand was also prepared. Catalytic activity of an aryl- and an alkyl-3-phospholene-palladium(II)-complex was evaluated in hydroalkoxycarbonylation of styrene. The alkyl-derivative showed higher activity and selectivity towards the formation of the esters of 3-phenylpropionic acid. However, the overall activity of these PdCl2(phospholene)(2)-type complexes was low.

Catalytic conversion of lignin to versatile aromatic compounds is attracting increasing attention. However, it is highly desirable but challenging to produce a specific chemical with high yield through lignin depolymerization in a one-pot process because of the complex structure of the lignin molecule (mainly composed of H, G, and S units). In this study, a series of metal-based deep eutectic solvents (M-DESs) were prepared and used for the catalytic tailoring of lignin H units to produce value-added methyl p-hydroxycinnamate (MPC). In particular, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) showed excellent catalytic performance for the selective production of MPC as the sole product with high yield and selectivity (105.8 mg g(-1) and 74.1%, respectively). Extensive characterizations using 2D HSQC NMR, C-13 NMR, and GPC demonstrated that MPC was obtained from the selective tailoring of p-coumaric acid (pCA) units via the cleavage of ester bonds in lignin. Furthermore, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) also exhibited efficiency to other herbaceous lignins, and showed excellent recyclability. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the valorization of lignin.

By using the reduced Schiff base tricarboxylate ligand H(3)cip, one novel 3D Cd-based coordination polymer (Cd-CP) with the formula [Cd(Hcip)(bpea)(0.5)(H2O)](n) (H(3)cip = 5-(3-carboxybenzylamino)isophthalic acid, bpea = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) has been solvothermally synthesized. The prepared Cd-CP possesses a 4-connected CdSO4 net based on dinuclear {Cd-2} units. Luminescence measurements revealed that the complex exhibited ratiometric turn-on luminescence responses toward Al3+ and Cr3+ with a significant color change, which could be easily distinguished by the naked eye under ultraviolet light. Cd-CP can also respond to Fe3+ through a turn-off mechanism. Interestingly, the luminescence quenched by Fe3+@Cd-CP can be recovered and increased significantly by adding some competitive Al3+, while Cr3+ can only marginally increase the luminescence intensity of Fe3+@Cd-CP. Moreover, the detection of the three aforementioned metal ions can be realized by using Cd-CP-coated test papers, extending the potential application regions of the reported material to point-of-care tests and environmental field studies.

A conceptionally novel nucleophilic substitution approach to synthetically important alkyl bromides is presented. Using molecular bromine (Br-2), readily available secondary benzyl and tertiary alkyl phenyl sulphides are converted into the corresponding bromides under exceptionally mild, acid- and base-free reaction conditions. This simple transformation allows the isolation of elimination sensitive benzylic beta-bromo carbonyl and nitrile compounds in mostly high yields and purities. Remarkably, protic functionalities such as acids and alcohols are tolerated. Enantioenriched benzylic beta-sulphido esters, readily prepared by asymmetric sulpha-Michael addition, produce the corresponding inverted bromides with high stereoselectivities, approaching complete enantiospecificity at -40 degrees C. Significantly, the reported benzylic beta-bromo esters can be stored without racemisation for prolonged periods at -20 degrees C. Their synthetic potential was demonstrated by the one-pot preparation of gamma-azido alcohol (S)-5 in 90% ee. NMR studies revealed an initial formation of a sulphide bromine adduct, which in turn is in equilibrium with a postulated dibromosulphurane intermediate that undergoes C-Br bond formation.

The Ginkgo biloba metabolite bilobalide is widely ingested by humans but its effect on the mammalian central nervous system is not fully understood(1-4). Antagonism of gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptors (GABA(A)Rs) by bilobalide has been linked to the rescue of cognitive deficits in mouse models of Down syndrome(5). A lack of convulsant activity coupled with neuroprotective effects have led some to postulate an alternative, unidentified target(4); however, steric congestion and the instability of bilobalide(1,2,6) have prevented pull-down of biological targets other than the GABA(A)Rs. A concise and flexible synthesis of bilobalide would facilitate the development of probes for the identification of potential new targets, analogues with differential selectivity between insect and human GABA(A)Rs, and stabilized analogues with an enhanced serum half-life(7). Here we exploit the unusual reactivity of bilobalide to enable a late-stage deep oxidation that symmetrizes the molecular core and enables oxidation states to be embedded in the starting materials. The same overall strategy may be applicable to G. biloba congeners, including the ginkgolides-some of which are glycine-receptor-selective antagonists(8). A chemical synthesis of bilobalide should facilitate the investigation of its biological effects and its therapeutic potential.
