The direct oxidation of alcohols to esters is an environmentally benign and cost-effective organic synthetic strategy, but it is still a great challenge to discover an economic, highly active, and long-term stable catalyst for efficient transformation of alcohols to esters under milder conditions. Herein, we developed cobalt and copper nanoparticle -co-decorated nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts (CoCu@NCn) through two steps of ball milling and calcination. It was found that CoCu@NCn could catalyze the oxidation of alcohols to esters effectively in the absence of basic additives. The catalytic activity was much higher than those of monometallic Co@NC2 and Cu@NC2 samples, and the catalyst can be conveniently recovered and quite steadily reused. Through a series of control experiments and characterizations, it is concluded that the remarkable catalytic performance of CoCu@NC2 was associated with the synergistic effect between the two metal components, the enhanced basic active sites and the active surface area.

Background Several studies have reported the association between polymorphisms in Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) gene family and risk of Multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the results have been inconsistent and inconclusive. To resolve this issue, here we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the MMP-91562 C/T (rs3918242), MMP-3 (- 1612 5A/6A), and MMP-2 (- 1306 C/T) polymorphisms and susceptibility to MS. Methods We conducted a comprehensive systematic search in the major electronic database, including Scopus and PubMed to look up for relevant studies published before December 2019 that surveyed the association between the MMP-91562 C/T (rs3918242), MMP-3 (- 1612 5A/6A), and MMP-2 (- 1306 C/T) polymorphisms and susceptibility to MS. The level of association between the polymorphisms and susceptibility to MS in the polled analysis was determined by calculating the odds ratio (OR) and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). Results We found 15 studies containing 2430 MS subjects and 2304 controls. A statistically significant association was observed in the all five comparisons of the MMP-91562 C/T polymorphism and MS risk as follows: dominant model (OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.03-2.53, P = 0.03), recessive model (OR = 2.69, 95% CI = 1.68-4.29, P < 0.001), allelic model (OR = 1.51, 95% CI = 1-2.28, P = 0.04), TT vs. CC model (OR = 3.20, 95% CI = 1.87-5.46, P < 0.001), and CT vs. CC model (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.02-2.28, P = 0.04). Conclusions Our meta-analysis revealed significant association of MMP-9 (- 1562 C/T) Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) with MS susceptibility that increased the disease risk. Photoredox chemistry has greatly stimulated the application of radical based transformations in medicinal chemistry and early drug discovery in recent years. Carboxylate groups have been identified as traceless leaving groups that can be converted into radical intermediates capable of undergoing 1,4-conjugate addition reactions to Michael acceptors. Herein, we show the successful C-terminal derivatization of small peptide substrates by using this methodology in a parallel synthesis setting. Finally, we outline a general strategy for the gamma-homologation of several drugs derived from alpha-amino acids in a late stage functionalization (LSF) approach.

Established electrodecarboxylative etherification protocols are based on Hofer-Moest-type reaction pathways. An oxidative decarboxylation gives rise to radicals, which are further oxidised to carbocations. This is possible only for benzylic or otherwise stabilised substrates. Here, we report the electrodecarboxylative radical-radical coupling of lithium alkylcarboxylates with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole at platinum electrodes in methanol/pyridine to afford alkyl benzotriazole ethers. The substrate scope of this electrochemical radical coupling extends to primary and secondary alkylcarboxylates. The benzotriazole products easily undergo reductive cleavage to the alcohols. They can also serve as synthetic hubs to access a wide variety of functional groups. This reaction prototype demonstrates that electrodecarboxylative C-O bond formation can be taken beyond the intrinsic substrate limitations of Hofer-Moest mechanisms.

Catalytic conversion of lignin to versatile aromatic compounds is attracting increasing attention. However, it is highly desirable but challenging to produce a specific chemical with high yield through lignin depolymerization in a one-pot process because of the complex structure of the lignin molecule (mainly composed of H, G, and S units). In this study, a series of metal-based deep eutectic solvents (M-DESs) were prepared and used for the catalytic tailoring of lignin H units to produce value-added methyl p-hydroxycinnamate (MPC). In particular, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) showed excellent catalytic performance for the selective production of MPC as the sole product with high yield and selectivity (105.8 mg g(-1) and 74.1%, respectively). Extensive characterizations using 2D HSQC NMR, C-13 NMR, and GPC demonstrated that MPC was obtained from the selective tailoring of p-coumaric acid (pCA) units via the cleavage of ester bonds in lignin. Furthermore, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) also exhibited efficiency to other herbaceous lignins, and showed excellent recyclability. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the valorization of lignin.

Hydroalkoxycarbonylation of olefins has been considered to be one of the most attractive methods to synthesize esters. Controlling the regioselectivities of linear esters (L) and branched esters (B) is a challenging project for researchers working in this reaction. Although most of the attention has been paid to control the regioselectivity through ligand design in homogeneous catalytic systems, study in the area is still limited. Herein, Ru-clusters/CeO2 is employed as a heterogeneous catalyst for the hydromethoxycarbonylation of styrene without any additives. After optimization of the reaction conditions, the conversion of styrene is > 99% with 83% and 12% regioselectivity of linear and branched ester, respectively. By using different supports (CeO2 (nanoparticle), CeO2-rod, and CeO2-cube), three catalysts including Ru-clusters/CeO2, Ru/CeO2-rod, and Ru/CeO2-cube are prepared and applied in the reaction. Structural characterizations demonstrate that the L/B ratio is related to the Ru size of supported Ru catalysts. Further Raman characterization and NH3-TPD demonstrate that the metal-support interaction and the concentration of oxygen vacancy of the catalyst have a great influence on the Ru size. By using 2-fluoro-substituted diaryliodonium salts, a novel benzocylization has been accomplished for the synthesis of 3,4-benzocoumarin derivatives via a cascade of ortho-arylation and defluorination in the presence of palladium catalysts. The reaction exhibits a broad compatibility of readily available aromatic acids with an excellent level of site-selectivity. Mechanistic investigations revealed a unique reactivity of carboxylic acid directed arylation by followed nucleophilic substitution of aromatic fluoride in the present system.

We report the synthesis of magnetically separable Fe3O4@Silica-Threonine-Pd-0 magnetic nanoparticles with a core-shell structure. After synthesis of Fe3O4@Silica, threonine as an efficient stabilizer/ligand was bonded to the surface of Fe3O4@Silica. Then, palladium nanoparticles were generated on the threonine-modified catalyst. The threonine stabilizer helps to generate palladium nanoparticles of small size (less than 4 nm) with high dispersity and uniformity. Magnetically separable Fe3O4@Silica-Threonine-Pd-0 nanocatalyst was fully characterized using various techniques. This nanocatalyst efficiently catalysed the Heck cross-coupling reaction of a variety of substrates in water medium as a green, safe and inexpensive solvent at 80 degrees C. The Fe3O4@Silica-Threonine-Pd-0 catalyst was used for at least eight successful consecutive runs with palladium leaching of only 0.05%.

In the present study, the effect of enzyme pretreatment on essential oil recoveries from sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaves was evaluated. Moreover, the consideration on the use of hydrodistilled residue by-products as a source of bioactive phytochemicals with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and repellent effects against the stored-grain pest Tribolium castaneum was examined. Results showed that the enzymatic pretreatment increased the extraction yield of essential oil by 400, 417, and 478% in hemicellulase-, cellulase-, and viscozyme-treated samples, respectively. Phenylpropanoids including methyl cinnamate, methyl eugenol, eugenol and estragol were found as the main components, and were particularly abundant in cellulase-treated samples. From the hydrodistilled residue of enzyme-treated samples, better recoveries of total phenols (TPC) (258.3-470.9 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoids (TFC) (59.4-94.3 mg QE/g extract) were observed. Using the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, a strong antioxidant activity of the rosmarinic-rich extract was observed. Such an activity which was mediated through electron transfer mechanism was highly correlated with the TPC, TFC and rosmarinic acid content. The in vitro bioassay showed that methanol extract (6.29 and 12.58 mu L/cm(2)) had repellent activity against the stored-grain pest Tribolium castaneum. These results suggest the potential of enzyme pretreatment to promote the use of hydrodistilled residue by-products as a valuable source of natural antioxidants and repellents ingredients.
