In contrast to the plethora of large-bite-angle bisphosphine ligands available to transition-metal catalysis, the development of small-bite-angle bisphosphine ligands has suffered from the limited structural variations accessible on their single-atom-containing backbones. Herein, we report the design and applications of a discrete very small bite-angle bisphosphine ligand, namely, FMPhos. Featuring a fluorene-methylene unit appended on the single-carbon linker, the ligand harbors an unusually rigid backbone that presumably stabilizes its complexation with transition metals during catalysis. Compared with the known dppm ligand, it exhibited superior reactivity and regioselectivity in a number of alkene hydrofunctionalization reactions, catalyzed by iridium and rhodium.

The complete conversion of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin in lignocellulosic biomass into value-added chemicals is of great significance in biorefinery processes. Herein, a cascade-step strategy was developed for the conversion of hemicellulose and lignin into mixed organic acids, and cellulose into ethylene glycol. Typical biomass of Miscanthus was first treated with formic acid in the presence of H2O2, giving a formic acid solution and cellulosic biomass. Lignin in Miscanthus was oxidized to low polymerized organic acids through linkage cleavages and aromatic ring ruptures during the treatment process, forming a homogeneous formic acid solution with a weight yield of 95%. Hemicellulose was transformed into maleic acid at 56.2% selectivity via a hydrolysis-dehydration-oxidation process. Both hemicellulose and lignin were degraded into organic acids with an overall weight yield of 92.4%. The cellulose in the solid residue had a hydrophilic surface and is highly accessible to catalysts in the aqueous solution, and it was totally converted into ethylene glycol with a yield of up to 65.7% over a binary catalyst of H2WO4-Ru/C. Relying on such a cascade reaction strategy, the three major components of Miscanthus were transformed into mixed organic acids and ethylene glycol, which provides a potential strategy for complete valorisation of biomass into value-added chemicals.

The Pd-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes using water as a promoter has been scarcely reported before. Herein, water instead of Bronsted/Lewis acid was found to effectively improve the catalytic performance of Pd (MeCN)(2)Cl-2-Xantphos system for alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes. Under the optimal conditions, the best yield of 97% was obtained for the target products (methyl 3-phenylpropanoate and methyl 2-phenylpropanoate) with L/B of 4.3 and TON of 192. With the involvement of water, Pd(MeCN)(2)Cl-2-Xantphos system also exhibited the moderate to good generality to alkoxycarbonylation of different kinds of alkenes with alcohols. The in situ high pressure FT-IR analysis verified that water played an important role in promoting formation and stability of Pd-H active species which was responsible for the efficient alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes. In addition, the ligand effect of Xantphos on this reaction was discussed.

By using the reduced Schiff base tricarboxylate ligand H(3)cip, one novel 3D Cd-based coordination polymer (Cd-CP) with the formula [Cd(Hcip)(bpea)(0.5)(H2O)](n) (H(3)cip = 5-(3-carboxybenzylamino)isophthalic acid, bpea = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) has been solvothermally synthesized. The prepared Cd-CP possesses a 4-connected CdSO4 net based on dinuclear {Cd-2} units. Luminescence measurements revealed that the complex exhibited ratiometric turn-on luminescence responses toward Al3+ and Cr3+ with a significant color change, which could be easily distinguished by the naked eye under ultraviolet light. Cd-CP can also respond to Fe3+ through a turn-off mechanism. Interestingly, the luminescence quenched by Fe3+@Cd-CP can be recovered and increased significantly by adding some competitive Al3+, while Cr3+ can only marginally increase the luminescence intensity of Fe3+@Cd-CP. Moreover, the detection of the three aforementioned metal ions can be realized by using Cd-CP-coated test papers, extending the potential application regions of the reported material to point-of-care tests and environmental field studies.

Comprehension in hemicellulose pyrolysis is critical to generate renewable fuel and valuable chemical. Herein, a self-designed tubular reactor was applied to observe the appearance alteration and chemical structure evolution during the whole xylan pyrolysis process. Before 200 degrees C, it was free moisture removal stage without significant chemical structure alteration. Xylan began to depolymerize at 200 degrees C corresponding with the appearance change from its original state to dark brown, cleavage of branched-chain and primary product acids & ketones generation. The main chain of xylan was completely broken at 250-350 degrees C via beta-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage, dehydration, decarboxylation, and decarbonylation reaction. Acids were mainly originated from hemicellulose pyrolysis. The typical signals from FTIR,C-13 CP/MAS NMR were disappeared at 350 degrees C. In the carbonation stage, the C/H and C/O ratio reached 2.01 and 4.54, leading to the aromaticity enhancement of char and formation of carbon-centered radicals.

The reactivity of ortho-functionalized N-heterocycle-substituted iodoarenes (NHIAs) as organocatalysts in iodine(I/III)-mediated oxidations was systematically investigated in the alpha-tosyloxylation of ketones as the model reaction. During a systematic catalyst evolution, it was found that NH-triazoles and benzoxazoles have the most significant positive influence on the reactivity of the central iodine atom. A further catalyst improvement which focused on the substitution pattern of the arene revealed a remarkable ortho-effect. By introduction of an o-OMe group we were able to generate a novel NHIA with a so far unseen catalytic efficiency. This new catalyst is not only easy to synthesize but also enabled the alpha-tosyloxylation of carbonyl compounds at the lowest reported catalyst loading of only 1 mol%. Finally, the performance of this iodine(I) catalyst was successfully demonstrated in intramolecular oxidative couplings of biphenyls and oxidative rearrangements.

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) worsens cardiovascular (CV) outcomes of heart failure (HF) and vice versa. The impact of rate or rhythm control strategies on HF progression and survival remains unclear. Methods We examined the risk of HF progression in AF patients (pts) with a prior HF event and minimal or no HF burden (NYHA class 0 or 1). They were stratified into HF with a preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (>= 40%, pEF) or reduced EF (< 40%, rEF). HF subgroups from the Rate and Rhythm arm were compared for the primary outcome of worsening HF or death (WHFD), total mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and cardiovascular hospitalizations. Results Four hundred ninety-two AF pts (HFpEF = 349, HFrEF = 143) were analyzed. Baseline characteristics were generally comparable in the Rate and Rhythm arms of the two subgroups. Over a median follow-up of 4 years, HF recurred and worsened in 66.6% and 41.2% of pts by >= 1 and >= 2 NYHA classes, respectively. HF progression by even 1 NYHA class increased the mortality risk in HFpEF (hazard ratio (HR) 2.06; 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.25-3.4; p = 0.004) and HFrEF (HR 1.9; 95% CI 0.99-3.66; p = 0.054). Cardiovascular hospitalization (CVH) increased in HFpEF (HR 3.67; 95% CI 2.56, 5.25; p < 0.0001) and HFrEF (HR 2.8; 95% CI 1.53-5.14; p = 0.0009). HF progression by 2 or more NYHA classes or death was significantly worse in pts with HFrEF with the Rate control strategy compared with the Rhythm control (HR 1.62; 95% CI 1.03-2.53; p = 0.036) but similar in pts with HFpEF (HR 0.88; 95% CI 0.64-1.21; p = 0.440).The time to first AF recurrence was longer in the Rhythm arms of both HF subgroups as compared with Rate (Figure, p < 0.05). Conclusions (1) HF progression in AF pts with a prior HF event confers significant mortality and CVH risk in both HFrEF and HFpEF populations. (2) HF progression is more pronounced with a Rate control strategy in AF pts with HFrEF, but is comparable to Rhythm control in AF pts with HFpEF. (3) A Rhythm control strategy may be desirable to reduce HF progression in pts with HFrEF and AF. A pyridine-based amide functionalized tetracarboxylic acid, 5,5 ‘-(pyridine-2, 6-dicarbonyl)bis(azanediyl)}diisophthalic acid (H4L), was synthesized and its coordination chemistry toward zinc(II) and cadmium(II) ions was studied. The reactions of H4L with Zn(NO3)(2).6H(2)O and Cd(NO3)(2).4H(2)O led to its full or partial deprotonation, respectively, and the formation of the 2D coordination polymers [Zn-2(L)(H2O)(4)](n).4n(H2O) (1) and [Cd-3(HL)(2)(DMF)(4)](n).4n(DMF) (2) (DMF = N,N’-dimethylformamide), respectively. They were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, photoluminescence, thermogravimetry, and single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. In 1, the L4- ligand is planar with every carboxylate anion binding a Zn(II) cation and giving rise to a 2D grid with the metals with tetrahedral environments. In 2, the combination of bridging HL3- and dimethylformamide to form trinuclear Cd(II) clusters engenders secondary building block units and generates a layer-type 2D network with the metals with octahedral and pentagonal bipyramid coordination geometries. The topological analyses of 1 and 2 reveal 2,4-connected and 3,6-connected binodal nets, respectively. On account of the presence of Lewis acid (Zn or Cd centers) as well as basic (uncoordinated pyridine and amide groups) sites, 1 and (to a much lower extent) 2 effectively catalyze the one-pot cascade deacetalization-Knoevenagel condensation reactions under quite mild conditions. They act as heterogeneous catalysts, being easy to recover and recycle without losing activity.
