Polyaniline coated on particles of celite is used as support to load palladium catalyst. This heterogenized Celite center dot PANI center dot Pd system, is used as an efficient catalyst for chemoselective hydrogenation reactions. The catalyst is characterized by usual spectral, analytical techniques and studied for hydrogenation reactions at ambient conditions. The mild reaction conditions allow the control over the reactions and excellent selectivity is achieved in number of conversions. Hydrogenation of a carbon-carbon double bond was favored over other polar pi-bond systems, while labile functional groups such as benzyl ether, benzyl esters, cyano, nitro and halogen remained unaffected. Primary amines were converted to N,N-dimethyl amines with formaldehyde, the double bond of coumarin was selectively hydrogenated without opening of the lactone functionality.

In the presented work, five bio-based and bio-degradable cyclic esters, i.e. lactones, have been investigated as possible phase change materials for applications in latent heat storage systems. Commercial natural lactones such as epsilon-caprolactone and gamma-valerolactone were easily purchased through chemical suppliers, while 1,2-campholide, oxa-adamantanone and dibenzochromen-6-one were synthesized through Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The compounds were characterized with respect to attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, in order to confirm their chemical structures and identity. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to measure the phase change temperatures, enthalpies of fusion, degradation temperatures, as well to estimate the degree of supercooling. The lactones showed a wide range of phase change temperatures from -40 degrees C to 290 degrees C, making them a high interest for both low and high temperature latent heat storage applications, given the lack of organic phase change materials covering phase change temperature ranges below 0 degrees C and above 80 degrees C. However, low enthalpies of fusion, high degrees of supercooling and thermal degradations at low temperatures were registered for all samples, rendering them unsuitable as phase change materials.

Catalytic conversion of lignin to versatile aromatic compounds is attracting increasing attention. However, it is highly desirable but challenging to produce a specific chemical with high yield through lignin depolymerization in a one-pot process because of the complex structure of the lignin molecule (mainly composed of H, G, and S units). In this study, a series of metal-based deep eutectic solvents (M-DESs) were prepared and used for the catalytic tailoring of lignin H units to produce value-added methyl p-hydroxycinnamate (MPC). In particular, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) showed excellent catalytic performance for the selective production of MPC as the sole product with high yield and selectivity (105.8 mg g(-1) and 74.1%, respectively). Extensive characterizations using 2D HSQC NMR, C-13 NMR, and GPC demonstrated that MPC was obtained from the selective tailoring of p-coumaric acid (pCA) units via the cleavage of ester bonds in lignin. Furthermore, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) also exhibited efficiency to other herbaceous lignins, and showed excellent recyclability. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the valorization of lignin.

The purpose of this study was to inspect the suitability of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicumL.) for phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated areas in urban areas of Egypt through study the impact of the most common pollutants in Egypt: cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) on morphological traits, and essential oil (EOs) content of sweet basil. The experiment was done under greenhouse conditions. The applied treatments tested in this experiment for Cd concentrations were 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ppm and for Pb: 100, 350, 750, 1,000, 1,500 ppm. The composition and amount of EOs had been determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that the contaminated soil had a negative impact on morphological traits development of basil (e.g., the decline in fresh and dry weight). The increase in Cd and Pb concentrations enhanced the EOs yield of sweet basil. In general, basil cultivation in the Cd and Pb contaminated soils could cause undesirable impacts on morphological traits; however, the presence of these metals has a major influence on the EOs yield, composition, and phytoremediation of the soil.

Development of organic nanoparticles with high fluorescence, good biocompatibility along with strong resistance to photobleaching through simple synthetic routes is important for diverse applications such as sensing and bioimaging. Herein, we present the development of a pyrene excimer nanoaggregate which shows aggregation induced emission (AIE) effect in a solvent mixture of THE and water. The pyrene based fluorescent probe, dimethyl-5-(pyren-1-ylmethyleneamino)isophthalate (5-DP) was synthesized through a simple single step condensation reaction from inexpensive reagents. The photophysical studies of nanoaggregated system further corroborates the AIE active behavior of 5-DP probe at different water fractions (f(w) = 0% to 90%), where the hydrogen bonding interaction between imine and water molecules led to suppression of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) inducing significant enhancement in fluorescence. The highly photostable nanoaggregates were explored as a selective fluorescence turn off sensor for phenolic nitroaromatics and the chemo-selectivity was highly pronounced for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid), that showed efficient quenching in aqueous as well as solid phase, with a detection limit of 10 nM in aqueous medium. The quenching efficiency of the nanoaggregates can be ascribed to a combination of factors including efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer, inner filter effect and coulombic interaction between picric acid and the aggregated probe molecules. Further, random aggregation of the pyrene derivative could be controlled for the formation of fluorescent spherical nanoparticles using Pluoronics P-123 block copolymers as encapsulating agents. The resulting composite could be used as a neoteric cell imaging probe with significantly less cytotoxicity, thus showing their potential biological applications.

Non-C-3-symmetric supramolecular helices are gaining interest for the design of hierarchical assemblies, for the compartmentalisation or the self-assembly of polymer chains and for application in asymmetric catalysis. Herein, N-substituted benzene-1-urea-3,5-biscarboxamide (BUBA) monomers, which consist of one urea and two carbon-connected amide functions linked to an aromatic ring, are introduced as an easily accessible class of C-2-symmetric supramolecular synthons. In apolar solvents, BUBA monomers assemble into long helical assemblies by means of hydrogen-bonding and aromatic interactions, as assessed by several analytical techniques. To probe the influence of the urea function, BUBA and related benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) helical polymers have been compared, in terms of their thermodynamics of formation, stability, reversibility and chiral amplification properties. Similar to BTA, BUBA monomers form long helices reversibly through a highly cooperative mechanism and the helicity of their assemblies is governed by chiral amplification effects. However, precise quantification of their properties reveals that BUBA monomers assemble in a more cooperative manner. Also, chiral amplification operates to a higher extent in BUBA helices, as probed by both sergeants-and-soldiers and majority-rules experiments. Compatibility between urea and amide functions also allows the formation of co-assemblies that incorporate both BUBA and BTA monomers. Importantly, a small amount of chiral BUBA monomers in these co-assemblies is sufficient to obtain single-handed helices; thus paving the way towards the development of functional supramolecular helices.

This work focused on the synthesis of 3D Pd-based nanocomposites which were tested in Heck coupling reactions and for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes. This was achieved by fabrication of graphene oxide/nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (G/N-CNTs) by mechanical grinding of 2D graphene oxide (GO) and 1D oxygen-treated nitrogen-doped CNTs (N-CNTs-OT) in a 3:1 ratio, respectively. The fabrication of G/N-CNTs is to overcome the habitual aggregation and restacking of graphene sheets. Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were deposited on the 3D G/N-CNTs nanocomposites via metal organic chemical vapour deposition method. The 3D Pd-based nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, SEM, HRTEM, XRD, TGA, XPS, ICP-OES, elemental analysis, BET analysis and Raman spectroscopy. For the Heck coupling reactions, aryl halides, olefins and 3D Pd-based nanocomposites were mixed in a suitable solvent and the reaction carried under microwave irradiation.The chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes was done with dry ethanol in a Paar reactor, purged with H-2 gas. These catalysts demonstrate excellent activity and selectivity in both reactions. The remarkable activity of the 3D Pd-based nanocomposites in Heck reactions and hydrogenation of nitroarenes may be attributed to the small particle size (3-10 nm) and a high degree of dispersion of Pd NPs. A comparative experiment was conducted with Pd/AC, Pd/CNTs, Pd/G/CNTs and Pd/rGO. Pd/G/N-CNTs-OT showed higher activity and selectivity than Pd/G/CNTs, Pd/G/N-CNTs, Pd/rGO and Pd/N-CNTs counterpart.

BACKGROUND Environmental safety of the agricultural utilization of livestock and poultry manures from intensive farming is attracting great attention and is effective as a good source of nitrogen for sustainable crop production. The present study aimed to determine the effects of organic poultry manure applications on the biological value and essential oil content of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). In this context, different doses of chicken, kibele (fermented chicken manure) and turkey manure (750, 1000, 1250 and 1500 kg da(-1)) with a control (no manure) were applied by sowing. RESULTS The essential oils consisted of p-Allyl-anisole as the most abundant component (5.65-17.90%), followed by nerol (6.69-16.11%), linalool (5.10-10.81%) and z-citral (5.23-10.73%). The contents of most of the chemical constituents varied significantly (P < 0.05) with organic poultry manure applications. The highest concentration for essential oils components was found in the chicken manure application. Both the antioxidant activity and total phenolic amounts of the basil extracts varied significantly as the organic poultry manure applications changed. The highest antioxidant activity and total phenolic amounts were obtained in the treatments with chicken manure doses of 1000 and 1250 kg da(-1), which were significantly different compared to the other treatments and the control treatment. Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of the essential oils against bacterial strains: Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 was assessed by the disc diffusion method and determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration. The results of antimicrobial assays indicated that all of the tested microorganisms were affected. The highest antibacterial activity against all tested microbial species was observed with 1250 kg da(-1) chicken manure applications. CONCLUSION Among the organic poultry fertilizations, chicken fertilization was of particular interest. Especially, chicken manure doses of 1000-1250 kg da(-1) had the highest antibacterial and antioxidant activity, as well as total phenolics, flavonoids and essential oil components. In order to discover more potent antifungal, a series of 2-aryl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2-iums were reasonable designed and productive synthesized by introducing benzoic acid and phenol pharmacophores into the 2-position of isoquinoline. Their structures were identified by NMR and HRMS. The preliminary in vitro antifungal results showed that most of the title compounds exhibited moderate to significant inhibitory activities against various phytopathogenic fungi at 50 mu g.mL(-1), and were equal to controls (chlorothalonil, carbendazim). The concentration of 50% inhibition rate (EC50]) of 2-(3-ethoxycarbonyl-phenyl)-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2-ium (4j) against R. solani was 3.8495 mu g.mL(-1), which was significantly superior to chlorothalonil (4.6328 mu g.mL(-1)). All the EC50 values of 5 compounds (7.4583 similar to 15.4495 mu g.mL(-1)) against R. cerealis were better than chlorothalonil (16.0137 mu g.mL(-1)), and 2-(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2-ium (4f) is the best one. The present results provide valuable information for development of plant-based antifungal agents.
