The fruits of Zanthoxylum armatum DC. were collected from different altitudes (1000-2000 m) and populations (wild and cultivated) from Salyan district, Nepal. The essential oil was extracted by Clevenger apparatus and the components were analyzed through GC-MS. The yield of essential oil obtained from hydro-distillation of fruits ranged from 2.72 to 7.6%. The maximum yield was 7.6% from wild fruits at 1600-1800 m altitude and the minimum was 2.72% from cultivated fruits at 1000-1200 m altitude. This was the highest recorded essential oil yield from Z. armatum fruits. A total of 13 volatile compounds were identified from the essential oil by GC-MS analysis. The major components were linalool, cinnamate (E)methyl, limonene, myrcene, sabinene and terpinen-4-ol, which were present in higher proportion in all the samples. Other components were identified in a very low proportion. The main component linalool occurred in the highest proportion (74.12%) from wild populations at 1600-1800 m altitude and the lowest (44.73%) was from cultivated populations at 1000-1200 m altitude. The highest proportion of linalool was also reported for the first time in this study from Z. armatum fruits. Among the six major components of the essential oil, terpinen-4-ol was present in the lowest proportion. Results of the present study indicated that the altitude and habitat types could affect the essential oil composition in Zanthoxylum armatum fruits.

For the first time a novel magnetic catalyst was prepared through hybridization of functionalized cyclodextrin nanosponges and octakis(3-chloropropyl)octasilsesquioxane followed by incorporation of Pd and magnetic nanoparticles. The resulting composite, was utilized as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for promoting Sonogashira and Heck reactions in the absence of any ligand and co-catalyst under mild reaction condition. Comparison of the catalytic activities of the control catalysts and the catalyst confirmed that cyclodextrin nanosponges was more efficient support that cyclodextrin. Moreover, the hybrid catalyst showed superior catalytic activity compared to those obtained from the individual components, indicating the contribution of both hybrid components to the catalysis. Furthermore, it was found that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles could improve the catalytic performance. The Study of the recyclability of the catalyst showed high recyclability of the catalyst as well as low Pd leaching. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Guillermo Calleja and co-workers from @urjc describe URJC-1-MOF as a new heterogeneous recyclable catalyst for c-heteroatom coupling reactions The capacity of copper-based URJC-1-MOF as a MOF catalyst in cross-coupling reactions has been evaluated, focusing on the Chan-Lam-Evans arylation-type reactions on amines and alcohols without extra additives or ligands. The extraordinary chemical and structural stability of URJC-1-MOF and its good specific surface, make this material a promising alternative to homogeneous Cu (II) catalysts for cross-coupling reactions. URJC-1-MOF showed a remarkable catalytic activity for cross-coupling C-N and C-O reactions, higher than other heterogeneous and homogeneous copper-based catalyst, such as CuO, HKUST-1, Cu-MOF-74, Cu(OAc)(2) and CuSO4.5H(2)O. Moreover, its easy recovery by simple filtration and reusability in successive runs without any loss of activity and stability, demonstrates the potential of URJC-1-MOF as an alternative catalyst for this kind of reactions in different chemical media of industrial interest.

The electronic states and photochemistry including nonradiative decay (NRD) and trans(E) -> cis(Z) isomerization of methylcinnamate (MC) and its hydrogen-bonded complex with methanol have been investigated under jet-cooled conditions. S-1((1)n pi*) and S-2((1)pi pi*) are directly observed in MC. This is the first direct observation of S-1(1n pi*) in cinnamate derivatives. Surprisingly, the order of the energies between the n pi* and pi pi* states is opposite to substituted cinnamates. TD-DFT and SAC-CI calculations support the observed result and show that the substitution to the benzene ring largely lowers the (1)pi pi* energy while the effect on (1)n pi* is rather small. The S-2(pi pi*) state lifetime of MC is determined to be equal to or shorter than 10 ps, and the production of the transient T-1 state is observed. The T-1(pi pi*) state is calculated to have a structure in which propenyl C=C is twisted by 90 degrees, suggesting the trans -> cis isomerization proceeds via T-1. The production of the cis isomer is confirmed by low-temperature matrix-isolated FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of H-bonding is examined for the MC-methanol complex. The S-2 lifetime of MC-methanol is determined to be 180 ps, indicating that the H-bonding to the C=O group largely prohibits the (1)pi pi* -> (1)n pi* internal conversion. This lifetime elongation in the methanol complex also describes well a higher fluorescence quantum yield of MC in methanol solution than in cyclohexane, while such a solvent dependence is not observed in para-substituted MC. Determination of the photochemical reaction pathways of MC and MC-methanol will help us to design photofunctional cinnamate derivatives.

This study aimed to comparatively analyze the volatile flavor of rooibos tea (Aspalathus linearis) obtained by two commonly used flavor extraction methods, simultaneous distillation-extraction (SDE) and steam distillation under reduced pressure (DRP). The tea obtained by the two extraction methods, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify volatile aroma-related compounds. Descriptive sensory analysis of the extracted rooibos tea flavor was carried out by a trained panel (n = 7). Fifty volatile compounds were identified, including 26 and 25 aroma-active compounds by SDE (45.9 mu g/g) and DRP (37.5 mu g/g), respectively. SDE recovered larger quantities of alcohols, acids, and esters, whereas DRP was useful for analyzing thermally unstable volatile compounds, including various alcohols, aldehydes, and hydrocarbons. Descriptive sensory analysis revealed that ketones and phenolic compounds may be responsible for the sensory attributes woody and grassy green, whereas the aldehydes and acidic compounds may contribute to floral and fruity.

By combining N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS)” as the safe chlorine source with Acr(+)-Mes as the photocatalyst, we successfully achieved benzylic C-H bond chlorination under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, benzylic chlorides could be converted to benzylic ethers smoothly in a one-pot manner by adding sodium methoxide. This mild and scalable chlorination method worked effectively for diverse toluene derivatives, especially for electron-deficient substrates. Careful mechanistic studies supported that NCS provided a hydrogen abstractor N-centered succinimidyl radical, which was responsible for the cleavage of the benzylic C-H bond, relying on the reducing ability of Acr(center dot)-Mes.

We report the [Ru(p-cymene)(L-proline)Cl] ([Ru1])-catalyzed cyclization of 1,4,2-dioxazol-5-ones to form dihydroquinoline-2-ones in excellent yields with excellent regioselectivity via a formal intramolecular arene C(sp(2))-H amidation. The reactions of the 2- and 4-substituted aryl dioxazolones proceeds initially through spirolactamization via electrophilic amidation at the arene site, which is para or ortho to the substituent. A Hammett correlation study showed that the spirolactamization is likely to occur by electrophilic nitrenoid attack at the arene, which is characterized by a negative rho value of -0.73.

In the presented work, five bio-based and bio-degradable cyclic esters, i.e. lactones, have been investigated as possible phase change materials for applications in latent heat storage systems. Commercial natural lactones such as epsilon-caprolactone and gamma-valerolactone were easily purchased through chemical suppliers, while 1,2-campholide, oxa-adamantanone and dibenzochromen-6-one were synthesized through Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The compounds were characterized with respect to attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, in order to confirm their chemical structures and identity. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to measure the phase change temperatures, enthalpies of fusion, degradation temperatures, as well to estimate the degree of supercooling. The lactones showed a wide range of phase change temperatures from -40 degrees C to 290 degrees C, making them a high interest for both low and high temperature latent heat storage applications, given the lack of organic phase change materials covering phase change temperature ranges below 0 degrees C and above 80 degrees C. However, low enthalpies of fusion, high degrees of supercooling and thermal degradations at low temperatures were registered for all samples, rendering them unsuitable as phase change materials.

Tandem bis-alkoxycarbonylation of alkynes allows for the preparation of 2-substituted succinates from alkynes and nucleophile alcohol via two successive alkoxycarbonylation with advantages of 100 % atomic economy and simplified one-pot operation. Herein, the one-pot tandem bis-alkoxycarbonylation of alkynes was accomplished over the bi-functional catalytic system containing Xantphos-modified Pd-complex and Lewis super-acid of Al(OTf)(3). It was found that, via the synergetic catalysis, the involved Xantphos-modified Pd-complex was responsible for the activation of CO and the alkynes through coordination to Pd-center while Al(OTf)(3) was in charge of the activation of the alcohol to facilitate the formation of [Pd-H](+) active species. The in situ high-pressure FT-IR analysis, coupled with H-1/C-13 NMR spectral characterizations, confirmed that the introduced Al(OTf)(3) with intensive oxophilicity (via acid-base pair interaction) was able to activate nucleophilic MeOH to be a reliable proton-donor (i. e. hydride-source) to warrant the formation and stability of [Pd-H](+) species upon the oxidation of Pd-0 by H+ (Pd-0+H+->[Pd-II-H](+)). Over the developed bi-functional catalytic system, the yields of the target diesters were obtained in the range of 36 similar to 86 % in this sequence with the wide substrate scope.
