Two new rtl-MOFs rtl-[Cu(HIsa-az-dmpz)] and rtl-[Zn(HIsa-az-dmpz)] have been synthesized by using the new bifunctional ligand 5-(4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazolyl)azo)isophthalic acid (H(3)Isa-az-dmpz). Both frameworks are potentially porous structures with DMF molecules included in the channels of the as synthesized materials. The flexible MOF rtl-[Cu(HIsa-az-dmpz)] undergoes a reversible phase change into a closed form upon activation. Consequently, rtl-[Cu(HIsa-az-dmpz)] shows S-shaped Type F-IV adsorption profiles or a gate-opening effect at cryogenic temperatures with high saturation uptakes of 360 cm(3) g(-1) for N-2 at 77 K and 310 cm(3) g(-1) for CO2 at 195 K. These profiles together with the reversibility could be reproduced upon repeated measurements on the same materials. The gravimetric high-pressure CO2 adsorption shows a gate-opening at similar to 10 bar with an uptake of 332 mg g(-1). rtl-[Zn(HIsa-az-dmpz)] undergoes an irreversible transformation into a non-porous phase upon activation.

The practical problems of insufficient mechanical strength, poor processability, tedious synthesis and flammability facing shape memory polymers have limited their further usage in industrial fields, especially in construction and aerospace. A novel and very simple method of ternary polymerization is presented here to prepare multi-functional copolyesters from general poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) through the new well-designed third monomer that features pendent phenylacetylene-phenylimide units. The pi-pi stacking between phenylacetylene groups as a reversible net-point not only endows the copolyesters with good shape memory and self-healability, but also reinforces the interchain interaction, leading to high tensile strength (79.6-89.6 MPa). Interestingly enough, the phenylacetylene can synergistically crosslink with the unsaturated C N group generated from the phenylimide during burning, resulting in excellent flame retardancy. Thermoplastic smart copolyesters can be designed into fire alarms and can also be used for 3D printing. The printed geometries exhibit good shape memory behaviors, which could be deformed into a small size to save space during transportation/storage and allow manufacturing freedom for space applications.

Regioselectivity for intramolecular Diels-Alder (IMDA) reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones that were formed by oxidation of 2-alkenylphenols with lead tetraacetate in acetic acid were studied. Bridged regioselectivity was observed in the IMDA reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones having a dienophile part which could conjugate with an aromatic group. Bridged seven-and eight-membered rings and bicyclo[2.2.2]octane skeletons were constructed by the present IMDA reactions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that conjugation of the dienophile with neighboring aromatic groups lowered the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gap and preceded bridged [4 + 2] adducts.

We report a robust and rigid etb-type metal-organic framework, in which its pore surface is decorated with flexible ethoxyl groups. The complete conversion of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin in lignocellulosic biomass into value-added chemicals is of great significance in biorefinery processes. Herein, a cascade-step strategy was developed for the conversion of hemicellulose and lignin into mixed organic acids, and cellulose into ethylene glycol. Typical biomass of Miscanthus was first treated with formic acid in the presence of H2O2, giving a formic acid solution and cellulosic biomass. Lignin in Miscanthus was oxidized to low polymerized organic acids through linkage cleavages and aromatic ring ruptures during the treatment process, forming a homogeneous formic acid solution with a weight yield of 95%. Hemicellulose was transformed into maleic acid at 56.2% selectivity via a hydrolysis-dehydration-oxidation process. Both hemicellulose and lignin were degraded into organic acids with an overall weight yield of 92.4%. The cellulose in the solid residue had a hydrophilic surface and is highly accessible to catalysts in the aqueous solution, and it was totally converted into ethylene glycol with a yield of up to 65.7% over a binary catalyst of H2WO4-Ru/C. Relying on such a cascade reaction strategy, the three major components of Miscanthus were transformed into mixed organic acids and ethylene glycol, which provides a potential strategy for complete valorisation of biomass into value-added chemicals.

Background: (E)-methyl-cinnamate (EMC), a phytochemical constituent isolated from Alpinia katsumadai Hayata, is a natural flavor compound with anti-inflammatory properties, which is widely used in the food and commodity industry. However, the pharmacological effects of methyl-cinnamate on pre-osteoblasts remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the pharmacological effects and mechanisms of EMC in pre-osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells (pre-osteoblasts). Methods: Cell viability and apoptosis were evaluated using the MTT assay and TUNEL staining. Cell migration and osteoblast differentiation were examined using migration assays, as well as alkaline phosphatase activity and staining assays. Western blot analysis was used to examine intracellular signaling pathways and apoptotic proteins. Results: EMC decreased cell viability with morphological changes and increased apoptosis in pre-osteoblasts. EMC also induced the cleavage of Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and caspase-3 and reduced the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins. In addition, EMC increased TUNEL-positive cells in pre-osteoblasts, decreased the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases, and suppressed cell migration rate in pre-osteoblasts. Subsequently, EMC inhibited the osteoblast differentiation of pre-osteoblasts, as assessed by alkaline phosphatase staining and activity assays. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that EMC has a pharmacological and biological role in cell survival, migration, and osteoblast differentiation. It suggests that EMC might be a potential phytomedicine for treating abnormalities of osteoblast function in bone diseases.
